From New York to England to Paradise

As I'm sitting here in Starbucks at Gatwick Airport, I can't help but think about the past year and what brought me to this point. Compared to most 25 years old I have done a lot in my youth. In the last few years, I have been lucky enough to visit the UK three times. I spent a fantastic Spring Break in Paris. I grew up only an hour train ride from New York City, and I have never been shy about exploring the East Coast of America and starting new adventures.

As a child, I spent most of my summers with family in what most people call Paradise. Now, I wait anxiously for my flight to Calgary, and from there I'll be headed to my new home in Hawaii. You would think anyone would be thrilled to get the opportunity to live in Paradise and don't get me wrong I am indeed thankful to have this opportunity. But, that still didn't stop me from bawling my eyes out at least twice a day this last week.

I have never been nervous about flying. All my anxiety comes the week before, in the planning and the packings and the endless nightmares of me missing my flight. I was a complete mess the months before I left New York for the small countryside village of Overton in the UK. To be quite honest I didn't really have time to fall into a pit of despair before this trip. One second I was planning Easter break here in Merry Old England and the next I was looking up cheap tickets to Kahului on lastminutetravel.com.

Five hundred dollars later and I had a one-way trip booked to Paradise. Only, I found it difficult to be excited. You see, I had already been planning a trip to the Aloha State for later this year. But, life seems always to manage to get in the way of even the most perfectly prepared plans. Life, in this case, was a text from my dad informing me that my Mom's condition was worsening. Perhaps the worst feeling a person could have is being an ocean away from their loved ones when you know they are struggling.

I made a choice last year to pick England over Hawaii. My parents, having had enough of the cold decided to pack up and move home to Hawaii. A lot of people question why I chose bleary old England over Paradise and to be honest. I don't blame them. But you see if there is one thing I always loved it is travelling, and that's just something you can't do easily from an Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

So we parted going our separate ways at the beginning of December of last year. I vividly recall the car ride home after having dropped my parent's off at JFK. Trying to drive in New York Traffic while holding back tears is in itself a tedious task. A week later I said farewell to my pup Bobby and our two Black Panthers as they began their long journey across the pond. I left in the evening arriving at Heathrow exhausted both mentally and physically.

I didn't think it was possible for me to cry anymore but as the moving van pulled up at our new house with the furries in tow a whole new wave of tears began to flow. Thankfully, Bob was there to lick them away. I think the hardest bit about this journey is knowing I have to leave him behind again. Even if it's only for a few weeks, it is difficult to comprehend spending any significant amount of time away from him. I have owned and taken care of numerous dogs over the years, but the bond I have with Bobby is a special one. I promise I'll see you again soon Bob, in the meantime, I’m sure Nana and Gary will take good care of you.

Anyway, I digress … there’s just an hour left till we board so I suppose I should try and wrap this up. If there is one thing, I’ve learned in the past couple of years is that change is inevitable and so it is important to embrace it when it happens. I’m not sure how long I’ll be in Hawaii, but I know for now I have to settle. I may not have an exact plan besides reaching my final destination for the time being. At least for the first week, I’m going to treat my impromptu trip as a mini vacation, I think I deserve it. As for the rest, for now, I’m just going to go with the flow and see where it takes me. 

Step 1 on this journey will be to set up my blog officially. I guess you can consider this my intro post. I’m excited to share this next adventure with all of you, and I hope at the very least I can help influence you not to be afraid of change and be willing to try new things. You never know just where you may end up!

I couldn’t have gone on this journey without you .. without you continually pushing me to try new things, helping me overcome the obstacles that stood in my path and comforting me when I felt as if my life got out of control.
