It’s messing people up, this social pressure to ‘find your passion’ and ‘know what it is you want to do.’ It’s perfectly fine to just live your moments fully, and marvel as many small and large passions, many small and large purposes enter and leave your life. For many people there is no realisation, no bliss to follow, no discovery of your life’s purpose. This isn’t sad, it’s just the way things are. Stop trying to find the forest and just enjoy the trees.
I still have bad days. I’m a very emotional person. The littlest things can spiral into sadness. But I’ve learned to push through. I used to wallow in my sadness. To let it consume me. What’s more romantic than malaise? But I don’t let myself do that anymore. I get drinks with friends. I go for a bike ride. I force my cat to cuddle with me. I let myself cry. I let myself feel bad. And then I make myself feel better. I make myself some tea. I read a book. I prioritize myself and my happiness. My life is far from perfect. But it’s mine. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Jon Snow is King in the North. Daenerys Targaryan is finally headed to Westeros. The endgame of ASOIAF has begun. Here’s how I see it playing out, at least based on recent events from HBO’s version of the story.
Dany invades Westeros with the combined might of her Unsullied army, a horde of savage Dothraki, a portion of the Greyjoy Fleet, and the powers of Dorne and The Reach. Oh, and three motherfucking dragons. There’ll be some minor battles here and there but seeing as the Lannister army is the only thing standing between Dany and the Iron Throne, I think it’s a safe bet that the family that stole the rule of Casterly Rock many years ago will finally run out of gold.
Don’t forget Cersei’s prophesy of her dying at the hands of the Valonqar (High Valyrian for Little Brother) either! After going all Mad King on the Great Sept, it’s looking more and more like Jaime will be the brother that ends Cersei’s life. Yikes.
Once Dany takes Kings Landing and incinerates the Lannister army, she will effectively have control over all of Westeros. OH WAIT A SEC I almost forgot that the Northern kingdom once again just declared themselves a sovereign nation under mister King in the North himself, Jon “R+L=J” Snow. Well, shit.
Okay, no biggie. Dany sends a raven and is all like “hey dudes I’m back bow down okay?” And Jon’s like “yeah that’s cool wanna help us kill these White Walkers?” And Dany’s all “Heck yes man also love your curls let’s bang after.” The End.
WRONG. Fuck that. There are two games at play here now. One is the political game, the game for the Iron Throne, the game we’ve been obsessed with since season/book one. And then there’s the endgame, the coming of The Long Night and the fulfillment (maybe) of the prophesy of Azor Ahai, the Prince that was Promised. Once the Wall comes down (and that shit is COMING DOWN) the first game is fucking moot. There ain’t gonna be a throne unless someone produces a magic sword (?), kills the Nights King, and prevents years of darkness and death. The problem is that Dany is still playing the first game but Jon has always been playing the latter.
So, can Dany adapt to this new challenge? Will she even trust the bastard son of Ned Stark, a man she’s been told who played a crucial part in the slaughter of her family and who has been trying to kill her for years? These may be lies, but that doesn’t matter much to Dany. The woman is a conqueror, as she’s proven over this past season, and cares for little else outside of taking back her “home.” She needs the North to bend the knee or her kingdom is incomplete. She will send ravens to all the major houses declaring herself Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. But what if Jon’s already left Winterfell? Who’s left to watch the castle and speak for House Stark? The Lady Sansa. And the unshakable Petyr Baelish, who btw just revealed his not-so-subtle super-objective during season six’s finale: he wants to sit the Iron Throne. DUH.
The return of the Targaryans isn’t good news for Littlefinger if he does indeed want to rule. Like Dany, Baelish is still firmly playing a political game and doesn’t seem a bit worried about zombies or ghost stories about endless darkness. I expect Littlefinger to drive a wedge between newly reunited Jon and Sansa, opening the doors for a bit of deviance when it comes to greeting their brand new fiery Queen. I don’t know how it’ll happen but someone is going to poke the dragon and you know what you get when you poke a dragon? FIRE AND BLOOD.
With the South firmly under Targaryan rule, Dany will lead a host of warriors north from atop her favorite son, Drogon. Not much stands in her way here: the Riverlands are in disarray, The Twins are utterly leaderless, and it turns out Moat Cailin isn’t that impregnable when the majority of their fighting men are rallied to Jon and you’ve got dragons. Knock, Knock. Who’s there? IT’S ME DANY AT THE GATES OF WINTERFELL LET ME IN OR BURN ALIVE.
Let’s pause here and talk for a sec about Targaryans. Why are they so special? Can someone tell me that? They aren’t. Targ blood, especially in the books, is nothing crazy or magical. Oh but Dany is fire resistant! In the show, yeah. But this has no basis in the books. And as far as superpowers go, it’s somewhere between Aquaman’s fish talk and something almost as useless (I’m sorry I don’t read enough comics to complete this analogy). But the Targaryans can tame dragons! And this has nothing to do with their blood. The Targs were sheep-herders who found dragons and used magic to tame them. Anyone can tame a dragon (look up Nettles and Ulf the White) and it has nothing to do with blood. But the prophesy! Which prophesy? The prophesy of Azor Ahai has nothing to do with Targ blood. The first Azor Ahai couldn’t have been Targaryan because the first Long Night ended approx. 3000 years before the Valyrian Empire rose to power. And it was the Starks alongside the King-Beyond-The-Wall Joramun that eventually defeated the first Nights King. The Starks are the true heroes in this story, not the Targaryans.
I’m almost tempted to cast the Targs as villains, in fact. This is a people that fled their home after they (probably) caused it’s destruction and proceeded to invade and conquer Westeros just because. Through years of infighting (and inbreeding) they produce one awful ruler after another and the realm bleeds constantly. It culminates with Aerys II, the Mad King, and finally explodes with the Great Tourney at Harrenhall (which many believe was a cover for a great council planned by Rhaegar to discuss what to do about his father). I have a hard time rooting for this family.
Where were we? Oh yeah: Dany hovers outside the gates of Winterfell. This is where my mind for plot gets hazy but basically I see it playing out like this:
- Dany kills Sansa. Boom. Dead. Say hi to Lady for me. Bonus prediction: Baelish straight up betrays Sansa.
- Meanwhile, Bran crosses through the Wall and that Night King tat on his arm does the same shit it did at Bloodraven’s hovel. AND THE WALL COMES CRUMBLING DOWN. Fuck. Bran and Meera probably survive, tho.
- Littlefinger delivers the news of Khaleesi’s redhead bbq to Jon and he’s like WTF. Guess Sansa was right, you couldn’t keep her safe after all.
- Jon is distraught but now the Wall is gone and the dead are marching. Bran shows up and is like “hey guess what you’re not dad’s kid you’re LYANNA’s kid what a twist right?!” Jon’s says “thanks but how does that help us here?” WHO KNOWS.
Btw while all this is happening, Sandor and Gregor are fighting somewhere while Brienne, Pod, GENDRY, Arya, and HOTPIE watch and place bets.
- Dany can’t believe the gall of this bastard who won’t meet her so that the fandom will get off her fucking back already. She and her dragons fly even further north.
- It’s getting colder. You can see your breath more than usual. That’s trouble.
- Dany arrives in style and start burning up the northern army. Jon and Bran join their power rings and become THE SUPER WARG BROS. Bran forma Rhaegal the Green. Jon forma Viserion the White. And we’ve got another Dance of Dragons on our hands, folks!
- Drogon is stronger and faster than his brothers but is he a match for TWO dragons? He sure puts up a good fight, diving, ducking, spittin fire. But it’s no use. Drogon falls and Dany falls with him, but she doesn’t die. When she wakes up, her nephew Jon Snow stands above her, Longclaw in hand. The rubies on her armor go flying when the Valyrian blade makes contact and suddenly Longclaw is aflame. The prophesy is complete, Azor Ahai walks again.
What follows is an epic season long battle directed entirely by Miguel Sapochnik where The Prince that was Promised banishes the darkness once again and defeats the Nights King once and for all.
THE END
A note: I do think Arya, Euron, and Mel will have a big part to play in this story I’m just not sure how yet.
