week 9 day 4
Things are pulling together. The root index page looks better than ever, and finally Whelps is on its way to looking like a real review site.
week 9 day 3
Lots of refactoring made the Venue-show page’s header run much more smoothly. Before today my review form was just shoving other elements out of its div, hiding them with overflow. Now it properly swaps out views, allowing lots more flexibility with what goes into both the default view and the review form.
The ‘detail’ view now holds a google-maps api box, a star-driven average rating, an array of pictures, and big buttons for switching to review mode. The review form keeps the positioning of the header and the stars put as the div changes modes.
week 9 day 2
My peer reviews suggested I show a little love to the CSS, so that’s what I got up to. I’ve added a fancier-looking splash page and begun implementation of Raty, a nifty jquery plugin for star ratings of stuff.
I’ve begun looking into some map APIs. I’m wondering what the best solution is for implementing a map of a fictional place.
week 9 day 1
Peer reviews went pretty well. I really appreciate getting some more eyes on this stuff, and it’s nice to get a sense of where my peers are at with everything.
Next up i\I’ll have to build the index page. I think there’ll be a lot of view to put there.
week 8 day 5
whelps has some tag functionality now. I’ll have to focus on tidying up the tag show page and the root page next. I had a few struggles sending up the tag data I wanted--and also some issues with using the tags’ labels instead of ids--but I think things are in great shape to move forward.
week 8 day 4
jBuilder works magic. I removed the ‘index’ routes from the ‘review’ model and now just serve up all of the review data I need with any given venue or user. I found myself needing to know if any of a venue’s reviews are written by the current user, and now I can just toss a boolean in the json and have that information ready to go.
jBuilder is love. jBuilder is life.
week 8 day 3
After a little massaging, rails api routes now serve up some nice json data for venues. Each venue’s response contains all of that venue’s reviews, with a little help from backbone’s parse method.
By tomorrow’s end I’ll have a form for submitting reviews on a venue’s show page, and those reviews will get info with the author’s username and a link to their user show page.
week 8 day 2
We’re out to pasture, building our own respective capstone projects. My dungeon-review application, whelps, helps users review and decide on the best fictional venues to raid with their adventuring party.
I built user auth, a few wireframe images, a solid database structure that enforces foreign keys, and a wide array of backbone objects. I also built some handy snippets that spit out backbone objects with common features. The views template, for example, gives you a template, a render function, and an events object, all for four keystrokes. Convenience itself.
week 8 day 1
Trello clone wraps up. I’m glad I skipped user auth on this project; I got the time to implement the Jquery UI stuff, including Sortable, which is just too fun.
I didn’t get around to implementing the re-ordering server-side. I’ll revisit it and make that happen, but for now it’s so satisfying to drag around little grey div elements.
week 7 day 5
From here on, we fly solo. I’ve sunk my teeth into the Trello clone project, and I really enjoy it. Everything we’re copying’s laid out, the relationships between objects make lots of sense, and we’re building these things alone. The training wheels are falling off.
I’m flailing a little to recall everything I’ve learned through the whole duration of school, but it’s been rewarding to see each piece fall into place. I’m excited to finish the clone.
week 7 day 4
Newsreader app. The various RSS feeds we took in had different formatting, so we had some trouble getting some of it to look good. (Damn you WIRED) The thing feels like a half-useful web application! RSS lives on!
week 7 day 3
Backbone continues as we refine patterns into templates. Some issues with links snagged us, but we’re learning plenty about the relationship between rails and backbone. I certainly appreciate the practice with building backbone objects and tinkering with them. The framework’s very strong.
week 7 day 2
We refactored our pokedex to use templates, rather than just lots of willy-nilly html/jquery mixed up all over the place. Things felt a lot better by day’s end, though I wish our assignments just had us use templates in the first place. Still, it’s nice to see backbone’s partials, and it’s interesting to see all its parallels with rails.
week 7 day 1
We built a Pokedex in backbone. I say this in every post, but everything’s really congealing now. Today we got to use ruby, css, html, javascript, backbone, jquery, and ajax. (Granted, backbone handled most of those last two.) We’re putting in templates and fancier form stuff tomorrow.
The full stack rises!
week 6 day 5
AJAX. I didn’t know how much AJAX handles! I’m definitely more curious about the single-page application, and more appreciative of dynamic page elements like quick searching or context-sensitive buttons.
Backbone begins Monday. Stuff’s really coalescing quick now.
week 6 day 4
jQuery the second, this time plugin-style. We built slices of functionality like carousels and tabbed content. Things looked pretty slick by the end as elements slid into view or faded out of view with some fancy css transitions.
I’m anticipating tomorrow’s return to rails. I think things will really start slamming together in a big way.
week 6 day 5
jQuery day. We built representations for some little games including tic-tac-toe, towers of hanoi, and snake. It’s interesting to see the way jQuery borrows from CSS selectors, and the way it’s used in JS to wrap stuff.
I’m not sure how instrumental it’ll be in building big sites but it certainly proved itself useful today.
