you started to notice luke’s distance, at first, it was just him missing dinner a few times.
you knocked softly on the door, peeking your head in. “luke, hon, dinners ready.” you said, voice soft like honey. the blonde looked up from his computer and nodded and you exited.
you sat at the dinner table alone that night, soon losing your appetite. cleaning up the kitchen, leaving the dishes in the dishwasher as you went upstairs for bed. luke is still in his office.
that continued for weeks, he would either not show or he’d show as you’re finishing. a small “i’m sorry” escaped his lips, you only walked past him to your shared bedroom.
the nights went cold, he would stay up until ungodly hours of the night leaving you alone. you had wondered what was going on, had you done anything to upset him? if you did why hasn’t he brought it up? you’d spend those nights crying yourself to sleep.
luke hadn’t noticed, he was too engulfed in his work. he didn’t realize he was breaking his number one promise to you.
“i’ll never put my work above you, y/n/n. you’re a gift from the heavens. i promise to cherish you until the end of our days.” the two of you swayed underneath the strung fairy lights in your backyard. having celebrated your third anniversary. you both thought nothing would ever come between the two of you. “i’ll love you forever, luke hemmings.” you smiled.
he sat in his office, strumming cords and humming repeatedly. he was making no progress. it was starting to get on his nerves, as he was already agitated he was getting nowhere. he tried humming the rest of the bridge but it just wasn’t coming to him. he huffed, setting the guitar down and walking out. his feet meeting with the cold hardwood floor of the hallway, then into the kitchen. soft unintelligible words coming from the tv, he assumed you were watching it.
“what’s for dinner, love?” he asked, opening the refrigerator.
“nothing” you answered, followed by a sniff. he raised his eyebrows, closing the door and walking over by you.
petunia sat by your side, head in your lap. “is everything okay?”
that question alone made you frustrated, tears welled in your eyes for what felt like the millionth time, and you paused your show finally letting your emotions spill.
“you’ve been away for almost two weeks, luke. i’m tired” you wiped your eyes, avoiding his stare. “i haven’t” he defended himself, he knew he couldn’t hold the weight of guilt. a dry laugh left your throat. “right. so, do you remember the job i applied for? yeah, i got it. or what about this morning when i fractured my foot when the guys were here to help you?” you pointed to the boot propped on the sofa pillow. guilt washed over him, staring at your foot, then eyes wandering back to your face. your eyes were puffy and red from crying, and the circles under your eyes were darker than ever.
“why didn’t you call?”
“i did! calum did, ashton did, mike did! we all called and texted you while i was at the hospital. but you were too fucking busy in that goddamn office!”
“shit!” you hollered from your shared bedroom. the loud thud and yell from you were enough to get the attention of the three boys in your house. they came to the rescue. not luke. “shit, y/n!” ashton came by your side, calum lifting the bedside table. pulling your foot back, michael held onto you. “can you put weight on it?” he asked, you tried but the sudden urge of pain made your eyes water. “no” your hand was tight around his arm. “i think i need to go to the hospital.” you whimpered.
calum and michael helped you downstairs and out of the house into your car. ashton frantically got your bag and everyone else’s things, he tried to get luke by knocking and trying to open his office door but he had locked it. tired of the interruptions.
at the hospital, the three of them tried continuously to contact luke. each call leading to a voicemail and each text being ignored.
you had just a bit of hope left that luke would come around, and you had hoped it would be today. you were in so much pain and all you wanted was for luke to hold you and tell you how much he loves you.
ashton entered the room, stuffing his phone in his pocket. your eyes met with his, hope lingered in your eyes but with a simple shake of his head, it all washed away.
he stared at you, no words coming to his head. “y/n..i..” he muttered. you shook your head, “luke i just keep hoping you’ll see how much i’m suffering. i keep hoping you’ll come around and fix things.” you felt so much anger, staring back at luke. he stood there in shock, this was the first time he had seen you so furious.
he blinked a few times, took a deep breath, and then opened his mouth.
“let me fix this, let me fix us. i can and i will. i just need a little more time to finish this project, hon.” you shook your head, a weak sob left your mouth, and buried your face into the palm of your hoodie. “luke..i’m tired. i’m so tired. you promised you wouldn’t put your work above me. you did. look what happened” your voice was weak, cracking as you spilled your heart to him.
“y/n…” he breathed, falling by your side. “i’ll fix this. i promise, we will talk in the morning.” he pressed a kiss on your temple, then another on your cheek. you refused to make eye contact with him.
you heard his footsteps echo through the hallway, you couldn’t help but feel defeated, you felt worse after having one of your few arguments. you had never felt so much anger and hurt before.
you slept on the couch that night, petunia by your side. on facetime with ashton for a couple of hours, deciding what your next step was. “what’re your options hotshot?” ashton asked, as he sat his phone down. “well..” you started, rubbing your tired eyes. “i could stay with either sierra or mike and crystal. just until i can get my stuff and find a place” you began brainstorming.
the conversation soon when quiet. you stared at the glass doors, it was a rainy night, and your eyes followed raindrops sliding down the glass. “do you think i’m making the right decision?” you asked, getting your friends attention. ashton pondered, “i do. i mean, i love luke. he’s like my brother but, i can’t excuse this behavior. especially after this week, i know he loves you but this has been going on for too long. it’s not good for either of you.” he continued, resting his head on his hand.
you nodded, agreeing. you still love him, you still think he is your whole world but you can’t let it continue. “you’re right..” a sigh escaped your lips, fighting back the urge to cry again. “i’ll see you in the mornin?” you asked, he nodded. “be there bright n’ early” he flashed an empathetic smile.
the next morning luke woke up alone, your side of the bed was cold he rubbed his eyes and then checked the time. it was almost noon, he slept in yet again. fighting a yawn he proceeded with his usual routine. it wasn’t until he got downstairs that he noticed how hauntingly quiet it was. he searched for you on the sofa, kitchen, or your office with petunia following him around but you weren’t there. as he returned to the kitchen his eyes landed on a sheet of paper on the island counter.
“luke,
these past few weeks have been hard to deal with alone. i feel like we are being split apart by invisible forces, im sure you don’t think so. but i do.
i’ve spent days thinking about how i would write this, but no words seem to come to me.
i think it is in my best interest that i leave, it’s for the sake of my health and yours. i still love and treasure you deeply but i cannot put you above my own needs and desires. i hope one day you find yourself and maybe we can start over, i don’t want this to be the end of us but i don’t think staying will benefit us.

Levi turned his head towards you. "You." He said.
"Levi." You gave a slight nod in acknowledgement.
"Nice to see you're alive."
"Nice to see you're walking around."
He cocked an eyebrow.
You sighed. That was too far.
"I'm sorry. It was a joke. A bad, insensitive joke, but it was a joke."
Levi nodded, shifting his weight on his crutch.
"It's been a month. I haven't even seen a glimpse of you till now."
"Eh." You shrugged, walking over to him to stand beside him on the balcony. His eyes followed your movements. He leaned against the wall, relieving the weight off his damaged leg and giving you space. You matched his stance, folding your hand on the railing.
"You do realize you can't stay inside your room forever?" He glanced at you with the corner of his eyes.
You squinted when the afternoon light hit your face. Unused to the brightness as you haven't seen the sun for a long time.
You spent your days in your dorm, curled up in a bed. You slept, woke up, sneaked off to the kitchen and bathroom when needed in odd hours, to avoid the people.
You haven't seen anything really. Or even heard anything. You don't even know about anything that's going on. You're too tired to. You don't even bother turning the lights on in your room.
It was strange, now. Being in your dorm. You tried your best to not think about it much but your dorm was so oddly empty, eerily silent. All your roommates were gone. Sasha and the other girl dead. Mikasa gone to where you have no idea.
Yet, there was a sort of peace in there. A sense of comfort. A shelter from the world outside. You were scared of the cruel reality that waited outside the door. So you made your own solution, you decided to not step out the door at all.
So It's the first time in a month, you caught a glimpse of life outside. It's the first time, you've seen him in a month.
And you didn't even dare admit it to yourself, but maybe...a part of you was avoiding him as well.
But you missed him.
The way he leaned over against the railing for support, how he winced at every slight movement, it sent a dull ache through your heart.
You sighed. "Try me." You said. "I saved the world, give me a break. Also, the doctor gave me bedrest."
"For a week only." He pointed out. "And you didn't save the world alone."
You groaned.
But you knew it was true.
That people wouldn't just let you stay in your room all day. That people weren't taking your isolation too well and there's only so much, your unspoken 'hero of the war' privilege can get you. Sleeping for 1 month straight was just too much.
But generally speaking, you saved the world. You should get to do whatever you want.
"You're gonna lecture me, captain?" You mumble. "I'm too tired to care, I'm afraid."
"Don't talk back. This is unhealthy for you."
"So what? That's my business. Let me rot away to death."
He glanced at you from the corner of his eyes and that look alone erased your attitude.
"Yeah, sorry." You muttered the apology quietly. Old habits die hard. You didn't give two fucks about the authority usually but one glare from Levi was still enough. And as much as you liked fucking around with him, that never changed.
"Horseface told me you've shut everyone out."
You frowned in annoyance. "What, is this a therapy session? Are we going to talk about our feelings and get all sappy?" You said sarcastically.
Again, Levi didn't say anything. Only shot a warning look towards you in response. Seems like he wasn't in much of a mood for your jokery.
And to be honest, you weren't either.
So you sighed.
".. I didn't." You answered quietly. "I'm just tired."
"All you do is sleep." He frowned.
"Yeah but like, I sleep, and then I get tired of sleeping, so I go to sleep again-"
"Why," He exhaled sharply. "Is it so hard for you to just converse like a proper adult without making fun of everything?"
"I don't like serious conversations." You huffed, folding your arms.
"So I've noticed." He sighed.
"Why'd you care anyways?" You muttered under your breath.
Levi pursed his lips.
"I don't." Was all he said.
Silence lasted a couple seconds.
There was something in the air, you could feel it. It was thick and it wrapped around your throat like vice, the pounding in your heart warned you of something to come.
Your eyes flicked to Levi and his blank face, wondering what was going through his head.
You followed his gaze, eyes catching in a field further away. Children played along it, you can just make out the outlines of them.
Happy kids, you thought. They don't have to stand awkwardly besides their captain as he's deep in thinking God knows what.
"Are you.." You asked after a pause. A pang went through your heart, the words stuttering. You hoped he wouldn't notice the slight crack in your voice. "Are you resigning..?" A calmer, more braced tone.
And you knew before he even answered. "Yes."
You nodded.
Your heart twisted itself into a painful lump of knot.
But you understood.
So why did it hurt so much?
You looked up at the sun. You hoped the sun would burn away the tears that was welling in your eyes, you hoped it would burn your soul along with it.
Is this how it ends? How you part ways?
"You're too old anyways." You finally said in a light-hearted voice. Like you weren't fucking breaking inside.
He snorted. "I can be an 89 year old grandfather and I'll still be able to take you down with one finger."
"Uh-huh."
You watched Levi as he fidgeted with his fingers, his other hand going over the bandaged knuckles. You winced at the sight of the missing digits.
"What are you going to do?" He suddenly asked.
"Me?" You were caught off guard. You hadn't expected the sudden steer of the conversation. But you considered, thinking.
I don't know, Levi. You tell me. You wanted to tell him.
I don't know what I'm supposed to do if you're not here.
But you only shrugged. "I was thinking of sleeping my life away. Make up for all the nights I couldn't."
He scrunched his face, clearly unimpressed with your choice of way to spend your life. He looked like he had a lot to say about it but then shook his head, probably realizing it's worthless arguing with you.
"You aren't coming back?" You asked then. More of a statement really.
"Is there a reason for me to?"

"I guess not." Maybe you will shrivel up and die.
He wouldn't even look at you.
And seconds passed, seconds turning to minutes.

You stared, eyes wide with confusion. But then his gray eyes locked with yours and you finally, finally realized.

"I can't," Levi suddenly blurted out, his tone was hesitant, unsure. "I can't promise you anything, but I swear I'll try. For you. For us."
You swallowed, every word sinking into your skin, healing wounds you didn't even know you had. But you took it.
He'd try. For you, he said.
"I'll go."

What do you think about the New Year holidays? Levi and reader started dating and she invited him to spend the winter break with her family and introduce him to her family as her boyfriend.
But there is a small problem. The reader has a younger 8-year-old sister who scared away all her ex-boyfriends (who actually was bad guys) and arranged hard pranks on them. In fact she did it because just doesn't want anyone to hurt again her older sister so she is childishly trying to protect her sister with such behavior.
A reader warns Levi about a possible little 8-year-old cute trouble, but he says that’s okay. At first, the reader's younger sister was wary of Levi and tried to prank him a couple of times. But after a while, she realizes that Levi is a very good person and accepts him. Kid stops her pranks and attempts to get rid of Levi and apologizes for thinking badly of him.
Levi says he accepts the apology and he is very happy that he is fully welcomed in reader’s family, because this is very important to him.

Levi comes over for the New Year's holiday to meet your family. You think it's all perfect, but your sister and Levi are having a secret battle over your love. Eventually, they have a heart-to-heart and connect over their love for you.
Athena's gaze bore into Levi as he stood in the entrance hall with you at his side. She was determined to get rid of him because Levi looked like he was another bad man for you. Athena had to protect you at all costs. She blushed hard when Levi looked down at her and gave her the tiniest smile. She had to admit, he was handsome but he had to be trouble.
She didn't like it when you hugged Levi's arm and smiled in pride as you told your parents all about Levi and how madly in love you were. She pouted hard when Levi agreed with you and said you were his entire world, the love of his life and his soulmate. Athena wasn't buying it.
She hurried away and grabbed the first thing she needed to attack. She grabbed her slingshot and filled a balloon with water. It was clear she was up to something. She pulled back the balloon, aimed it at Levi and released the balloon.
Athena gasped in awe as Levi happily talked to you, reached his arm out and caught the small balloon without breaking it. He excused himself and got rid of the balloon. She expected Levi to get her into trouble, but he didn't say a thing.

Levi hummed a laugh as she ran off. He turned and joined you. "Your sister is funny."
You grinned. "She is. I know there is a massive age gap between us, but she's a little darling. I love her and I hope you get on with her. She's not been pulling pranks, right?"

"Great!"
He played with your hair a little. "Are your feet okay? The shoes you wore here are new."
You hummed. "They're okay."
Levi knelt in front of you and pulled your socks off. He massaged your meet as he inspected. "I don't see any marks. Does this feel okay?"
"Thank you." You sighed. "You spoil me too much."
He smiled at you. "I love you. I love doting on you. I'll do anything for you."
Athena gazed at you and Levi in your own little world. She felt guilty wanting to go after Levi, but she didn't trust him fully. It didn't matter that you both were smiling and sharing sweet kisses.
She ran to the kitchen and made Levi a drink with washing-up liquid in it. She giggled and trotted over to Levi and handed the drink to him. "Mr! I have a drink for you!"
Levi gazed at it. "Oh, how sweet of you Athena. I would love to take it, but I already have a wonderful cup of tea made by your dad."
You smiled. "I'll take it."
She pulled the cup away from you. "No! It has to be his!"
You stared at her. "Athena. What's in the drink?"
She went white. "N-Nothing."
"Athena?"
She ran away from you. "Nothing!" She poured the drink down the sink and huffed. "Smart sister." She huffed and heard her dad talking to Levi about seeing the garden. "Perfect."
She grabbed some legos from her room and then put them into the slippers waiting for Levi. She skipped outside and grinned in pride knowing she had beaten Levi. She was calling it. She had victory.
She watched you walk out with Levi and talk to him. She frowned when she watched Levi start fiddling with someone in his hands. She clenched up when Levi walked over to her and offered her something.
Levi opened his hand to show a flower made from Lego. "For you."
Athena blushed. "Cute."
"I've never really played with Lego before, so thank you for getting me some to play with."
Athena took the flower. "You didn't have Lego as a kid?"
Levi shook his head. "No. I was poor as a kid. My mum and dad worked very hard to put me through school. I didn't play much as a kid because I was studying so much so my parents would be looked after when I was older." He smiled fondly. "They're lovely. They'd love you."
"You...you can play with my toys."
"Really? Thank you. I'd love to."
She shifted a little on her feet. "Um...what do you do?"
He sighed. "Well, I'm the CEO of a tea and coffee company. I like to spoil your sister with my money." He chuckled. "It's hard though because she doesn't like to be spoiled."
Athena giggled. "She doesn't ask mummy and daddy for much. She doesn't ask for things for her birthday."
Levi crouched in front of her. "How about we make a deal? I know you love your sister a bunch and you've been trying to prank me to get rid of me like the others. Levi sits in a local cafe, waiting for you to come out on your lunch break. He cuddles his daughter Lilly and treats her to a delicious snack. A group of ladies fuss over Levi and Lilly, but Levi is a very lovesick and loyal man to the love of his life. You.
Levi pushed the pram as he walked down the street as he felt excited to see you for lunch. He looked down at his baby girl and smiled. He felt his heart flutter when she squealed in delight and grabbed the air at him. He reached down and tickled her cheek, then continued to push the pram to the cafe.
He pushed the door open, moved the pram inside and picked the usual spot in the corner, so he had plenty of room for the pram and it was where you and him had many dates. He carefully lifted his daughter out and sat her on his lap. He adjusted the blanket and got out a bottle from the baby bag.
"Levi, good to see you. The usual?"
Levi smiled at the waiter. "Please."
He picked up the bottle. "I'll warm this up for your daughter."
"I appreciate it." He grabbed Lilly's toy and handed it to her. "Here you go, my little flower."
Lilly wiggled her toy for a bit before stopping and playing with it. She hummed and looked up at Levi. "Aboo."
Levi chuckled. "That so? Fascinating."
"Oh my god." A girl gasped as she gazed at Levi. "He's so fucking hot and he's a dad."
Her friend purred. "Maybe he's a single dad. I bet he'd love help from us."
"Yes! We could help him out and look after him."
She giggled. "Perfect. I'll go." She got up, flicked her blonde hair over her shoulder and swayed her hips as she walked. She moved closer and expected Levi to look at her, but he didn't. She always had men staring at her, but it wasn't working. "Damn it."
The waiter moved past the blonde and placed drinks on the table and some snacks. "Here you go, Levi."
Levi smiled. "Thanks." He sipped his tea and hummed. "Wonderful stuff as usual."
"Thank you, Levi." He leaned closer and whispered. "Those two ladies will keep pestering you. Do you want me to handle them?"
Levi offered the bottle to his daughter and shook his head. "We've got this under control. Right Lilly?"
Lilly wiggled her arm. "Mmm! Ba!"
"You heard her." He moved the bottle closer. "Come on, you little terror." He smiled when she started drinking. "Good girl."
The waiter smiled. "Call me if you need me."
"Appreciate it, Will."
The blonde huffed a bit before moving closer to Levi. "Hi."
"No."
She gasped at Levi's sudden answer. "I...you...uh..." She cleared her throat. "I'm-."
"Don't care." He smiled at Lilly and cleaned her face. "Think it's time for you to burp, my little angel." He turned Lilly and patted her back. "Oh, big burp. Well done."
The blonde welled up. "Your baby is so cute and beauiful."
"Like her mother, who I love more than life itself." He glared at the woman. "Now, fuck off because I'm having a fun outing with my precious baby and then a date with my wife."
She whimpered and turned away as she felt embarrassed. She hurried over to her friend. "How dare he reject me."
Her friend rubbed her back. "Let me try." She got up and wiggled her bra a little before checking her black hair. She smiled and walked over to Levi. "You're a sexy daddy. How about you be my daddy?"
Levi scooped up some pudding and offered it to Lilly. "Eat up, my little flower."
"Hey, I asked you a question."
"And I thought I made myself clear to your friend." He offered Lilly another spoonful. He flicked a deadly glare at her. "I'm not interested. Piss off." He smiled at Lilly. "Messy girl." He cleaned her face. "There we go." He looked up and felt his heart flutter when you hurried inside. He called your name. "My darling."
You hurried over to him. "Hey, handsome." You leaned over and kissed him. "Hey, my baby girl." You took her from Levi and giggled when she patted your face. "Hi." You kissed her puffy cheek. "I missed you."

The first time that Levi met you, he’d been too rough around the edges, a newly freed man from the underground with one too many health issues and a sickly complexion.
Against his will, Erwin had sent him in for a medical examination, a requirement he’d been forced to endure before officially joining the Survey Corps. It seemed a life with minimal sunlight had lasting effects on the human body. Levi thought that was a reasonable assumption.
He’d suffered through the check-ups, holding his tongue when the doctors prodded at him with invasive hands and told him what nutrients he needed more of. He’d taken their advice, for the most part.
You were still a nurse back then, holding a strong desire to help people and eyes with an innocence that would never last. When the doctor had been running late one evening, you’d come in to check Levi’s pulse, asked if he had any pain.
He’d stared at you for a moment, and for the first time in his life, fumbled for the right words to say.
Trivial things like beauty had never been important to Levi, but your smile had been the only image in his mind for days.
You’d visited him again for another check-up the next day.
And Levi was, really, perfectly fine. He knew there was nothing seriously wrong with him. Though, you had been so eager to do your job, so happy to help a fragmented man, that he let you take care of him for a week and, ridiculously, pretended that he was in much more pain than he actually was.
A hesitant sort of bond started between you after that. You were still intimidated by his brashness, and he was too afraid of his own feelings to ever let himself accept that he found you enjoyable to be around.
Although, whatever he felt ceased to matter after that. Levi officially became a scout, lost the only two people that cared about him, and hardened even more.
Years passed before he saw you again, and by then, you’d become a doctor, saved more patients than you lost, and built a name for yourself.
Levi saw you much more once he became the Captain of the Survey Corps; soldiers on his squad were always getting injured, and he nearly died on a couple missions.
Somewhere along the way, he’d fallen for you. Too quickly and too easily, especially for a man like him who knew better than to care for people.
Still, he figured he was allowed at least one good thing in life, and he’d chosen that to be you. The pretty little doctor who had snuck into his heart.
“Levi?” Hange was in front of him, snapping a hand in front of his eyes, overly concerned and much too close. “Are you losing more blood? You look pale.” She prodded at him, a humored grin spreading across her mouth. “Someone might think you’ve been living underground.”
Hange laughed loudly and Levi pushed them away, irritated, and worn-out from the mission.
“I’m fine,” he said, though his ribs ached, and he couldn’t deny the pain that lingered in his side. “Just get off of me. You smell foul.”
Hange made a face. “Just plug your nose then.” A slender finger poked at his ribs again, and he recoiled, hissing. “See! You’re not okay.”
Levi’s aggravated response went unheard as Hange called a doctor over, waving their hands dramatically. A scowled embedded even deeper into his features.
“I’m fine, shithead. Stop being dramatic.”
Though his protests didn’t matter much. A man in a white coat came by after Hange’s call, adjusting a spectacle as he tucked parchment under his arm. “Is everything alright?”
“Can you please have the captain checked out? He was injured outside the walls, and I’m not sure our first aid did well at stitching him back up.”
The doctor looked over Levi skeptically, peeling back the wrapping around his middle that had already dried brown with blood. “We’ve got a lot of people in need of assistance. I can try and get a nurse to help you, but—”
“Where’s the other doctor?” Levi knew your name, of course he did, but he was afraid if he said it something would change on his face. “The younger one.”
“There are other squads that ended up worse off. She’s taking care of them at the moment.” the gray-haired doctor said, looking at his parchment. “I’ll tell her to make her way over here. I don’t know how long it will be.”
Levi could tell what the man was thinking: that he was Captain Levi, and they could afford to lose the other scouts, but they couldn’t afford to lose him. Still, Levi’s wound had been treated sufficiently. At the very least, he didn’t feel like he would pass out again any time soon.
“I can wait.” Levi looked at the other battered members of the Scouts, some of them with slices up their arms and deep gashes in their skulls. It was a sickening sight really. No one should’ve been worried about him. “These soldiers have worse injuries than I do. You should treat them first.” He glanced at Hange beside him, the glasses making their eyes look even rounder. “And take Hange while you’re at it. Maybe you can find out if there’s a cure for being an idiot.”
The doctor cracked a smile. “Come with me then, Section Commander. You seem to be free of injuries, and we need some help taking care of these soldiers.”
“Of course, sir. I’ll do everything I can.” Hange nodded and stood to follow the doctor. She sent Levi one last look before leaving. “Don’t let your wound get infected because you’re trying to play the hero.”
“I’m fine, Hange. Seriously.” He blinked at her, his expression blank, and Hange sighed before disappearing into the crowd, into the mess of carnage from another fruitless journey outside the walls.
Levi waited for a half hour, watched as more soldiers were led away from the central room into the private wing of the hospital. Someone had cracked a window, and a warm breeze of fresh air fanned into the anteroom.
It was starting to get hot again. He dreaded the summer missions that burned his skin.
The chair was stiff, but he could’ve dozed off in it, suddenly feeling more light-headed than he had when Hange left. Levi shifted, bringing a palm down to his wound. The pain was starting to get worse again. When he drew his hand away, there was more blood.
Shit. That wasn’t a good sign. The stitches mustn’t have been done properly.
He started to stand, beginning to wonder if he should just stitch the wound back up himself, when you finally approached, and the sight of you sent a wave of relief over him. You were like his very own guardian angel, illuminating the hospital with nothing more than a hopeful smile.
Immediately, Levi softened, wondering how you could get more and more beautiful every time he saw you.
“Captain Levi.” Your eyes dropped to the seeping bandage, the shoulder that wasn’t sitting right. He’d dislocated it, twisted a little too funny when slicing up a titan. The tissue there had probably worn down too much. “Don’t tell me you’ve been waiting for me.”
“My injuries are minimal. Thought I’d take my chances until someone competent could stitch me up properly.”
Your jaw clenched, and though you reached your hand out to him, you retracted it, remembering there were other people around. With a sigh, you pointed over your shoulder instead. “Come with me.”
Levi followed you down the hall, to a shimmering white room that smelled too much like flowers. You gathered a few supplies, and he watched you, taking a seat on the bed.
Without a word, you began unwrapping the bloody gauze, cleaning the dark wound with unfazed, sharp eyes. His chest was exposed to you, the shirt already removed.
“At least tell me you missed me before you get me undressed,” Levi said, his tone dry as you pressed a warm cloth to his skin.
You narrowed your eyes, your expression exhausted. He was certain you’d been working nonstop since the Survey Corps got back. “I did miss you, Levi,” you said quietly, wringing the blood out of the cloth. “I always miss you.”
Against his will, Levi’s heart panged in his chest. It was almost too easy for you to get a rise out of him.
You worked in silence, and Levi let you—you’d done this many times for him before, and he knew how much you hated being disturbed.
Though, you looked so sweet with your lip jutted out in focus, and he relaxed, unable to stop himself when he leaned forward to give you a kiss.
To Levi’s disappointment, you saw him coming and pushed him away, placing a bloody hand in front of your mouth to stop him. “Levi!” you shouted in exasperation, though you were far too used to him to be surprised. “I’m not done.”
He sighed, leaning back once more, though the smallest of smiles was on his lips. “I thought you were the best doctor in the interior,” he said mockingly. “Shouldn’t you be a little faster than this?”
“You should work on being more patient. It’s only been a few minutes.”
“Has it?” Levi snorted. It felt like an eternity. You were there in front of him, so lovely and focused, and he could hardly contain himself. He’d spent weeks away from you, and he couldn’t even sneak a quick kiss.
You laughed, the sound stirring up butterflies in his stomach, and he relented, the seriousness in your expression pulling him back to reality. He sat quietly and left you to do your work.
Your hands were soft against his skin as you sealed up the wound, fixed up the stitches, so gentle that he almost forgot about the pain entirely. Having you to watch certainly helped keep him distracted.
Finally, you stepped away, satisfied, and grinned. “Alright. All done.”
“You mean it?” Levi leaned forward, and the ache in his abdomen pinched. “You’re not going to wipe your disgusting palm on my face if I try to kiss you?”
A part of him was, completely serious, but another laugh escaped you as you wiped your hands on a clean rag, the blood still staining your palms. But it was his blood and Levi figured if it had already dirtied his own skin, it didn’t matter much.
He kissed you, momentarily, and the feeling of your lips brought him entirely back to life. Levi wasn’t sure what about you changed him so completely, made him feel a jolt of energy zap into him every time you were around, but he was addicted to it.
He took a breath, for a moment, his expression gentle, though he didn’t have the opportunity to kiss you again. The door had been thrown open, slamming against the wall, and Hange strolled in, wearing a wide smile and bright eyes.
“Levi,” Hange said, much too loudly, and he recoiled, wondering if they’d seen him kiss you. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
Probably not then. Hange would have made that the first topic of conversation.
You smiled politely beside Levi, already placing a professional distance between you. He craved the warmth, missing you again already. “How are you, Hange? I take it you didn’t get too banged up on the mission?”
Hange laughed, throwing an arm over your shoulder like old friends. “Not a single scratch.”
“A miracle, really, with the way you’re always throwing yourself into danger.”
“Oh, don’t be silly. I always play it safe.” Hange turned back to Levi; lips pulled up to reveal a white grin. “I see you’re feeling better then. The doctor got you all patched up?”
“I always do,” you hid a smile behind your hand, careful not to touch it to your mouth.
Levi sighed, hating how well you two got along. He might as well have told Hange about your relationship in the very beginning. You two saw each other every time the Scouts were in the interior wall. “Didn’t you have something to tell me, Hange?”
Hange scrunched her face up, before recognition passed through it. “Right,” they said, straightening. “Erwin’s requested your presence in a meeting with Commander Pyxis and the Military Police. They’ve got a lot of questions.”
“I’m sure they do.” Levi struggled to his feet, feeling much older than he really was. He wondered when all of the hits to his body would start to catch up to him. “I’ll follow you out, then.”
Levi exchanged a look with you, conveying everything he couldn’t with Hange standing there.
“I’ll see you later then, Captain Levi. Hange.” Your smile was refined, corresponding to your current status, and you saluted like a good soldier would. Then, the two of them were off.
Hange tossed a grin over their shoulder once the two of them were outside the hospital, eyes crinkling behind thick lenses. “You look a little flushed there, Captain.”
Levi stared back at Hange indifferently, not an ounce of emotion in his cool eyes. Hange always teased him when it came to you, but he doubted she ever figured out the truth. “Is that so?”
“Why don’t you just confess your love already?” Hange said romantically, batting their eyes and holding clasped hands to her chin. “It’s been years Levi.”
“I’m sure you’re not insinuating I’ve got any sort of romantic feelings,” Levi said dryly. He was certain that he had not been blushing, and he pinched Hange’s cheek too, the pink tint there as well from the warm weather. “It’s not like it’s nearly summer.”
Hange swatted him away, their joyful expression falling as a pout formed on their lips. “Oh, you’re so boring, Levi. I’m only messing with you.”
Levi let out a weary noise, somewhere between a sigh and a groan, wondering how he’d managed to put up with the most insufferable person for years and years on end. “You sound like a teenager.”
After his mess of a meeting with the military police, Levi headed to one of the nicer homes at the edge of the city, an older building in Wall Sina that had managed to stay intact after the Female Titan incident.
It wasn’t his home, not really, but it was the only one he had outside of the military housing and the single private room he received as a commanding officer. And, it might as well have been his anyway—his clothes all hung in the closet, his teacups stuffed in a crowded cabinet. He was there more than he was anywhere else.
The door opened easily when he pushed the knob, and while he knew you were expecting him, he hoped you didn’t always keep it unlocked. The streets were too wrought with crime; a fact he was far too aware of.
When he opened the door, the scent of home and a freshly made meal invaded his senses, warming him to the very core of his soul. He slid his shoes off at the door, careful not to track in any mud.
You hadn’t heard him come in, too busy cutting up vegetables to throw into a pot. You hummed to yourself softly, distracted entirely by your own thoughts.
Levi smiled, admiring you for just a moment and taking in that second to carry it with him on his next mission. For so much of his life, he’d hardly had a home to come back to. It was nice to remember that he had a person waiting for him on the other side, someone that could be there for him in the moments that he didn’t want to be alone.
He snuck up behind you quietly, and you remained completely unaware until he wrapped his arms around your middle, relaxing into your body in a way he’d never been able to when he was away from you.
You jumped momentarily, but eased into his arms right after, recognizing his touch easily. One of your softer hands wrapped around his, the other still throwing chopped vegetables into the pot.
“I didn’t hear you come in,” yod, and he pressed a gentle kiss to your temple, tranquil.
So much of his time had been spent in a world that was a living hell, trying to deal with the overarching mess that had started years ago, and being with you was the only time he could ever recover. The knowledge that he didn’t have to always be humanity’s strongest soldier with you gave him, at least, some semblance of peace.
“I hope I didn’t scare you,” he whispered, hooking his chin over your shoulder as he looked at the stew you were making. It was the best thing he had smelled in weeks, and Levi felt too spoiled after a childhood spent eating mud and garbage from the streets. “You could’ve waited for me to get home. I would’ve cooked something instead. I know you’ve been working all day, taking care of the Scouts.”
“Levi.” You pressed a kiss to the back of his hand, smiling into the delicate skin. “You’ve been gone for weeks. You probably haven’t had a proper meal since you left, and you were injured. I don’t want you to strain yourself.” You turned to face him, wrapping your arms around his neck. “I’m glad you’re home. You can get some rest now.”
You pressed a kissed to his nose, and no matter how many times you referred to your home as his as well, a fiery warmth bloomed inside of him.
“Me too.” Levi smiled at you tiredly, brushing his thumb over your lips before retracting. “I’m going to get cleaned up. I’ll be back in a bit.”
“I’ll tell you when the food is ready.”
Levi nodded, and released you hesitantly, already wanting to be around you for every moment he had in Wall Sina. Instead, he headed towards the bathroom, where he knew the soap that he preferred would be waiting for him, just as he’d left it before.
“Levi?”
He turned at the sound of your voice. You were watching him with hearts in your eyes, the very expression something he would probably never been accustomed to.
“I love you.”
Levi softened, his feet melting into the floor entirely. “I love you too.”
Your face grew so bright, and you turned back to your task, newly invigorated. Levi had gotten better at saying the words, at accepting that you wouldn’t get taken away from him just because he cared about you.
It had been a long road, certainly, but somewhere along the way he’d started to become familiar with happiness.
“Levi, what do you think of this one?” You spun in a slow circle, making sure that he saw every angle of the dress. You were watching him with a skeptical look, suspecting that he wouldn’t be honest with you.
Which was maybe true. Levi didn’t know very much about what was in style. He just thought you looked nice in everything.
“It’s pretty,” he said, indulging you with a nod. “You look very pretty.”
Despite yourself, you grew warm, smiling at yet another compliment from him. He’d said the same thing about every dress, but he loved seeing the expression on your face, the twitch of embarrassment, even though you’d been together for years.
It was rare that the two of you got to do something so calming. You were meant to go to a ball in the upcoming weeks, gain some kind of recognition for your accomplishments as a doctor, and you were in desperate need something to wear.
Of course, you’d decided the moment that Levi was home would be the perfect time to go shopping.
Though, it didn’t matter. He would’ve gone with you anyway, even if you needed an outfit or not. Levi was just so incredibly proud of you. A part of him wished he could accompany you to the ball, even if being in a stuffy room with a crowd of pretentious, wealthy men sounded like the most undesirable event in the world.
“Well, which makes me seem like I know what I’m doing?” you asked him through the mirror, the tailor doing her best not to intrude on the conversation. “I like the blue one, but do I look too young?”
“Well, you’re not old,” Levi scoffed. “Besides, I hardly think you need new a dress to let people know you’re a professional.” Though, he mulled over the question regardless, mostly taking your inquiry seriously. You were making a face at him. “I like the blue one too.”
He liked them all, really.
You smiled, letting the tailor finish up her job and Levi turned, wondering how much of a dent this would put in his wallet.
“I’ll just be a second,” you said, leaning down from your stool to kiss him. His lips curled up when they met yours. “Want to wait outside?”
“Sure.” Levi turned, and for a moment, swore he saw a flash outside, someone speeding past the window. When he looked closer, no one was there.
He ignored it, leaving a wad of cash with the store-owned and tried to remember that he no longer needed to save that money for another meal.
As he waited for you to finish up, Levi leaned against the wall, watching the people walk back and forth, paying him no attention at all. It was sometimes easy to forget that not everyone recognized him. Not everyone cared, really, that he was Captain Levi.
It was refreshing to be ignored.
“Levi,” you said wearily as you came out of the short building, and he knew what was coming next, knew what words would leave your mouth. “I told you I’d take care of it.”
“Consider it paying back a favor.” He fell into step beside you as you turned the corner, going down the narrow alley.
You creased your eyebrows skeptically, trying to catch his eyes. The ones that had brightened minimally after a night of rest in an actual bed. “A favor for what?”
“I don’t know. Letting me live in your house? For cooking for me last night?” Your frown deepened, exasperated and Levi sighed, rolling his eyes. “Just accept the gift, you idiot. I was trying to do something nice.”
You gazed at him in disbelief for another moment before laughing, the seriousness evaporating. “You’re so sweet.” You grinned, and Levi thought that was hardly the word to describe him, but you seemed so happy that he didn’t say anything. “I appreciate it a lot. Thank you.”
“Come on,” Levi said, huffing when you tried to kiss him again. “We should go back home before I run into one of those intolerable brats from my squad.”
Though, Levi really regretted the words, wondering if there was some higher being out there who just lived to cause him grief. Not a moment later, he heard a familiar voice rounding the corner, getting much too close to where he was standing.
“Armin, look! I told you. I saw him with someone.”
Levi’s jaw tightened as Eren sprinted down the alley with his smarter blond friend in tow, and a dark-haired girl who never seemed to leave his side.
The three of them nearly ran into the two of you, skidding to a stop only when they noticed you both turning the corner, and gauged the unamused expression on Levi’s face.
“What are you two doing here? Don’t you have training or something?” Levi’s voice was stern, though he knew they had the day off, just as he did. Just as you did.
“Captain Levi!” Armin straightened, looking nervous under his tense gaze. Levi wondered what it would take for that kid to gain some confidence. “Sorry, we didn’t mean to intrude. Eren just said—”
“Eren said—” Eren began, but before he could continue, Hange had also come around the corner with Erwin, the two of them laughing like they’d found something very funny.
Levi wished he had his gear so he could start swinging the blades at all of them.
“Levi,” Erwin greeted him good-naturedly, and Hange was snickering beside him, their eyes glued to the minimal space between you and him. “Eren said there was an emergency this way. What seems to be the issue?”
That little shit. Levi could’ve kicked the stupid grin right off his face again.
“Did he?” Levi said, swallowing down his anger, his expression as nonchalant as usual. “I’ve got no idea what he could possibly be talking about.”
“Eren said you two were kissing.” Mikasa spared no time for idle conversation, her eyes as hard as his own as she made the comment in a bored tone. If Levi had to guess, she’d been pulled into the situation because Eren had caught them and couldn’t keep his nose out of other people’s business.
And Hange, who had never been very good at holding back laughter, doubled over with tears gathering at the corners of their eyes.
“Oh,” you said beside him, embarrassed, and Levi softened, remembering that even though he’d kept the relationship a secret for your own safety, there really had never been a need to. You were never going to leave his life, not if he could help it, and he trusted the five people before him enough to keep it from becoming public knowledge. “I’m sorry,” you whispered to him, momentarily panicked. “That was my fault.”
Levi hated the look on your face; he never wanted you to look so disheartened again. He sighed. “Eren, you should learn to keep your mouth shut.”
At least, Eren had the good sense to sober up. His back became rigid, any humor disappearing from his face immediately. “Right, sir, I’m sorry. I just thought—”
“I’ve got the day off like the rest of you, don’t I? Maybe you should let us spend it in peace.” Levi boldly grabbed your hand, walking through the middle of the starstruck crowd, knowing he’d have to deal with their endless questions sooner than later.
For now, though, he just wanted a relaxing day with you by his side.
“Levi, wait! Why didn’t you tell me?” Hange’s dramatic cries rang out through the air as he glared at them over his shoulder, eyes narrowing so intensely it almost hurt.
Behind him, Eren’s cry of pain could be heard after Mikasa slapped him over the head. “Eren! I told you that was a bad idea.”
“Bye!” you said sweetly, like nothing had happened, and continued along with your hand in Levi’s, a stupid smile on your face.
When you were far enough away from lingering ears, Levi looked over to you, shaking his head. “Why do you look so happy?” he asked, exasperated, and ready to go home.
You shrugged. “I like that someone else knows that I love you.”
And though Levi would still push Eren twice as hard at the next training, he couldn’t be too mad at him after that.

Y/n gripped his hand tightly as they neared the stairs, too tight for Spencer to not say anything.
He stopped before she could take the first step. "Hey, what's up?" He gently asked, turning to face her.
Y/n groaned, trying to look everywhere but his eyes. "I'm just freaking out a little." She mentioned casually. Spencer could see right through her humorous tone.
"What's wrong?" Spencer asked, running his other hand over her cheek.
Y/n let out a sigh. "I'm anxious. I don't know." She struggled to put it into words. "I'm just really thankful you're here. It's good to have someone on my side." She decided.
Spencer gave her an inquisitive look, but she brushed it off. "I'm always on your side. Now, are you ready to have a good time?" He asked, trying to cheer her up.
Y/n smiled. "Yeah, let's go." She decided, looking over the stair rail to see a few people in fancy dress already arriving.
They stepped onto the ground floor just as the front door was opening.
"Logan!" Y/n cheered, dropping Spencer's hand to wrap her arms around a tall guy with short brown hair.
"Y/n!" He cheered back, mocking her high tone as they pulled away. "I haven't seen you in months." He complained.
Y/n sighed. "You're sounding just like my mother." She mentioned with a laugh. She then turned back to Spencer, grabbing his hand and pulling him over. "This is Spencer." She introduced, smiling up at her fake boyfriend.
Spencer stuck out his hand to shake Logan's. For some reason, he didn't mind shaking the hands of the people closest to Y/n.
Logan was dressed in a dark grey suit with a light blue tie. He had straight, slick back, light brown hair, and a clean-shaven pointed chin. He was tall but probably an inch shorter than Spencer.
"Ah, the mysterious boyfriend," Logan concluded with a laugh. "I wish I could say I've heard a lot about you, but I haven't."
Spencer smiled. "I've heard a lot about you, all good things." He mentioned.
Spencer usually wasn't comfortable around strangers, but he seemed to be with Logan.
"Well, that's good. Otherwise, I would be telling you some embarrassing stories about Y/n." Logan joked as he looked at Y/n with a pointed glare. "You know I probably will anyway." He figured, eliciting a laugh from Spencer.
Y/n shook her head, frowning at him. "Absolutely not."
Spencer jumped in. "I have some great embarrassing stories about Y/n as well."
Y/n spun back around to look at him. "What?" She demanded with a surprised tone. Spencer just shrugged, looking at her with a smirk. She couldn't help but smile back.
"You're in big trouble, Y/n." Logan joked, snapping her attention away from Spencer. "Now, where can I get a drink?"
Y/n rolled her eyes. "Come witness the chaos." She instructed, gesturing towards the kitchen.
Spencer took her hand as they walked into the kitchen. Logan left their side to go and greet Y/n's parents.
"Do you actually have embarrassing stories about me?" Y/n whispered to Spencer.
He nodded, a grin on his face. "Of course." She groaned at him. Spencer pouted. "That's no way to treat your boyfriend." He complained.
Y/n just rolled her eyes at him. "If you tell anyone anything embarrassing about me, you'll be sleeping on the floor." She promised him, trying to keep a stern face.
Spencer smirked before bursting into a laugh. "You're the opposite of scary." He informed her, unable to think of the girl so much shorter than him, with her arms crossed across her chest, as any percentage of scary.
"And what would that be?" Y/n asked, turning her head slightly.
"Adorable," Spencer replied. He knew hundreds of thousands of words, but the attempted anger on her face was nothing except adorable.
Y/n rolled her eyes, unable to hide the blush on her cheeks. "That's no way to compliment your girlfriend." She replied, using his previous phrasing.
Spencer lent down, so he was close enough she could feel his hot breath on her neck. "You look exquisite, baby." He murmured.
Y/n felt chills run down her spine, her skin heating up as she tried to keep her composure.
Spencer knew what he was doing to her, and that just made it more fun. He pulled away. "Should we go get a drink?" He offered.
All Y/n could do was nod, trying to keep the blush off her cheeks and breath properly.
The cocktail bar was just out the patio doors, and all the guests stood in the garden area. Y/n gripped Spencer's hand as they made their way to get drinks.
She was a little bit terrified about who she was going to have to face in the next few hours, which is why she got the bartender to pour her a double shot of vodka along with her cosmopolitan.
Spencer, who rarely drunk, went for a Mojito after taking one sip of Y/n's cosmopolitan and almost spitting it out. Y/n found it hilarious and had to reassure the bartender that he just didn't like cranberry.
"You're evil for that, you know?" Spencer told her as they stood there, figuring out who to talk to.
Y/n giggled as she looked up at him. "Sorry, it was too funny not to." She pulled her eyes off him when she saw someone she recognized across the lawn.
Spencer got dragged along with her happily.
"Addy!" Y/n cheered, drawing a blonde's attention to her. Addison, Spencer assumed, was dressed in a short red dress. Spencer noticed she was pretty, but he couldn't stop admiring his own date.
Addison squealed and wrapped Y/n in a hug.
Her date turned around and stuck his hand out to shake Spencer's. "I'm Carlton Moore." He introduced himself.
Spencer shook his hand. "Spencer Reid."
"So, this is the secret boyfriend," Addison concluded, all eyes on Spencer once again.
Y/n grabbed his hand and pulled him closer to her side. "You've been getting that a lot tonight, haven't you, handsome?" She teased.
Spencer nodded. "I've heard you're a Doctor." Addison chimed in. Y/n furrowed her eyebrows at her friend, who explained. "Sophie's getting the word out."
"Ah, good. I need the reputation boost. That's why I brought him." Y/n joked, evoking a giggle from Addison and a pout from Spencer.
But, he knew just how to get his revenge. "Addison, Y/n tells me you have some good stories about what she was like as a teenage." He suspiciously conversed.
Y/n spun around, mouth open in shock to hit Spencer on the arm. "You said you wouldn't."
Spencer shook his head. "I did no such thing." He told her before turning his attention back to Addison. "So, what did you get up to?" He pushed.
Both Addison and Carlton were laughing at the couple bickering like children. Y/n had known Addison long enough to know the look in her eye was approval, more approval than she'd ever seen before.
"We're going to go, so I can take my item of show-and-tell to boast about to everyone else," Y/n mentioned before any childhood stories could be shared.
"It was nice to meet you," Spencer said as he was being pulled away.
Addison and Carlton waved goodbye to them. "I promise to tell you those stories later, Doctor," Addison assured him. Spencer nodded at her with a smile before looking back to his fake girlfriend, who was feigning annoyance.
"Are you having fun?" Y/n asked him, half still playing along with the joke, half genuinely.
Spencer nodded quickly. "A ton, I don't get out much like this." He noticed. "I could come to this with you every year." He spoke before he could filter it. Even a tiny amount of alcohol made him do that.
Y/n picked up on the implication of what he said, but she figured he'd just made a mistake. As much as she wanted it to be what he was really thinking.
"We've still got all the pretentious people to met." Y/n realized, looking at some of the adults standing around them.
Spencer was a little concerned, but holding Y/n's had made the worry slip away. He was wondering if it would be a weird thing to do during cases.
"Addison and Carlton were nice, though." He remembered.
Y/n nodded. "Yeah, and I have a feeling you've already won them over. Also, no stories." She insisted.
Spencer laughed at her, only able to shake his head before they were interrupted.
"Angel, just the person I was looking for."
Y/n physically winced at whoever was talking to her, nuzzling closer to Spencer. He had an intuitive feeling, notifying him something bad was about to happen.
"Preston White, meet Doctor Spencer Reid, my boyfriend." Y/n introduced, not making any attempt to hug her ex-boyfriend.
Preston was just a little bit shorter than Spencer. He had short blonde hair. If Spencer was profiling him, he would definitely say he was an alpha male with a narcissistic personality.
There was a waft of far too much expensive cologne like Preston had taken a bath in it. He was dressed well, but he was wearing far too many prominent designer logos.
Out of courtesy, Spencer shook his hand, immediately feeling a surge of negative energy.
It wasn't something he firmly believed in, but all atoms vibrate, so he couldn't rule out that negative energy existed.
"A doctor, probably too good for you, don't you think?" He condescendingly asked.
Y/n gripped Spencer's hand tighter, almost looking like she was going to cry. So, Spencer stepped in. "Y/n's actually one of the smartest people I know, so if what you're insinuating is that I'm too smart for her, then you're wrong."
Preston held up his hands in mock defense, still with a patronizing smirk. "You definitely sound too smart for her, don't worry, I was too." He said, pretending to empathize with Spencer. "It's a good thing you're so hot, Y/n."
There were very few things that made Spencer mad, but this guy was at the top of the list. He wasn't sure if it was how Preston's voice sounded or if it was how bad Spencer could sense it was making Y/n feel.
"I'm just going to take that as a compliment, so I don't have to punch you in front of all these people." Y/n spat out.
Spencer knew she was tough. He had seen it a lot at the BAU, but he thought she was going to shy away from the confrontation.
"Wow, calm down, sweet stuff." He condescendingly commanded.
Y/n rolled her eyes at him. "Why don't you go and act like a dick to someone else?" She suggested.
Spencer wrapped his arm around her waist, leading her away from the jerk he was learning Preston was.
Y/n looked upset, her features softening as she tried not to cry.
"Are you alright, baby?" Spencer asked, facing her and rubbing a hand up and down her arm.
Y/n nodded, looking up to the sky before taking a deep breath. "Yeah, I just can't screw up my makeup." She said before turning back around, so they weren't facing each other.
Spencer could tell she was trying to put on a brave face. To comfort her, he wrapped his arm around her waist, holding her close to her body.
"I really hate him, you know?" Spencer told her, trying to make her smile.
Y/n nodded. "I told you you would." She reminded him, sounding happier.
"You know nothing he said is true, right?" He asked.
Spencer wanted to tell her how smart and pretty she was, not just hot but, they got interrupted.
"Y/n!" A voice called, not sounding as cheerful as they normally did.
Y/n tensed, her smile dropping. "Mr. and Mrs. White." She greeted, a firm tone in her voice.
Spencer had heard that last name before. He was guessing these were the parents of awful Preston. And he was about to figure out if it was nurture or nature.
"And who is this?" Mrs. White asked as she looked up and down at Spencer.
Y/n kept her stiff posture. "My boyfriend, Spencer Reid." She introduced, dropping his title after the reaction she'd gotten from their son.
Spencer shook both of their hands again Y/n was apprehensive about touching them.
"And what do your parents do?" The pretentious Mrs. White continued.
Spencer looked confused, looking down at Y/n before the couple again.
"Spencer's from Las Vegas." Y/n jumped in.
That obtained a disapproving nod from the couple as well as an "Oh."
"Is that why you still have to work that meaningless job?" Mrs. White asked. "I was just telling your mother the other day that if you got back together with Preston, and apologized you could stop having to work." She rudely recounted.
Y/n's hand traveled to Spencer's on her waist, squeezing it hard as to avoid yelling at this woman. "I'm still enjoying the FBI, and I love Spencer." She answered diplomatically. Spencer smiled at her, unable to hold his stern front at her words.
"Well, that's nice, dear. Just remember, the longer this breakup goes on, the worse it's going to be when you get back together." Mrs. White unhelpfully reminded her.
Y/n nodded, her lips drawn in a tight line. She wanted to scream that there was no way she'd ever get back with Preston, but she didn't.
With that, they walked away, leaving Spencer standing there shocked.
"I'm sorry, Spence." Y/n turned to him as soon as they were out of earshot.
Spencer shook his head. "Don't be. I just didn't know people could be that..."
"Pretentious? Obnoxious? Rude?" Y/n offered, filling in his statement.
"Mean to you." Spencer decided, still frowning.
Y/n felt better with his words, despite how annoyed she was with Preston's parents.
"Thank you." She affirmed. "You should have seen them the Christmas after I broke up with Logan." She said with a little chuckle. Spencer wasn't laughing. He couldn't imagine listening to any worse remarks about Y/n. "Want to go meet some more people?" She asked. Spencer looked apprehensive, shifting his eyes around the other guests. "Don't worry, we'll meet some normal people." She promised.
Spencer nodded, taking his hand off her waist to hold her hand instead.
They spent another hour making small talk, and it was tedious.
Y/n was even thankful when her mom announced it was dinner.
They took their seats at the smaller table. The inside of the marque was decorated gorgeously, with fairy lights, balloons, and perfectly set up cutlery.
Y/n and Spencer at the left end of the table, Addison and Carlton across from them, and her brother and Sophie to their right.
"Soph, who's sitting here?" Y/n asked, leaning over Spencer to ask Sophie about the seat at the head of the table.
Sophie furrowed her eyebrows. "The Miller's daughter, I think." She replied.
"Oh, Grace? She's really nice." Y/n replied, sitting back in her seat with a smile.
Spencer leaned down to whisper into her ear. "See? It'll be okay." Y/n nodded, breathing a sigh of relief. Still, she downed another cocktail. There was quickly another one placed in front of her. "Slow down." Spencer noticed she was able to down it.
"Alright, fine." Y/n agreed, putting the glass down.
Spencer gave her a nod before putting his hand on her thigh just below where her dress ended. It made Y/n's stomach twist differently than it twisted when she came face-to-face with Preston.
He looked over at her with a smirk at the blush on her cheeks.
Both of them were almost too tied up in each other to notice the person sitting at the head of the table.
They definitely noticed when he spoke. "I guess it's my lucky day."
Preston White. Again.
Y/n rolled her eyes, glaring at him. "Why are you sitting here?" She asked.
"I managed to convince Gracie to swap seats." He announced with a smirk.
"Could you just leave me alone for one dinner?" Y/n spat back.
Preston shook his head. "Absolutely not. Where were you last year?"
Spencer's hand was gripping tighter on her thigh, almost jealous if she was guessing. "I was busy in DC."
"With him?" Preston asked, talking about Spencer like he wasn't there.
Spencer tapped a finger on her thigh, and she remembered their signal. "As friends." He clarified.
He was sticking to the truth, sort of. Y/n spent the last 4th of July with the whole BAU team.
Preston huffed at that. "You could have spent it in my bed. I know you used to love that, and I'm guessing you miss it." He proposed.
Spencer's grip was iron tight, holding Y/n in place. She reached down to place a hand over his slender fingers.
"Actually." She turned her head back to look at Preston. "I don't miss that, for a single second. Spencer makes me come 10 times harder than you ever did. And, he can last more than 1 round." She replied, keeping her tone even.
Spencer loosened her grip on Y/n's thigh, rubbing small circles onto her skin instead. She tried to act like it wasn't making her blush.
Preston scoffed, leaning back in his chair and taking a sip of his drink. "Mate, I've got to be honest." He started, looking past Y/n and at Spencer. "She's far too sensitive after sex, you can get better pussy. Even around this table." He crudely stated with a scoff.
"I'd actually rather we didn't talk about my girlfriend like that." Spencer insisted, glaring at Preston. He couldn't understand how someone could be so horrid. Especially to Y/n who was always so sweet.
Y/n could sense how possessive Spencer felt, keeping as close to her as he could.
Spencer lent in closer, so no one else could hear their conversation. His breath was hot on Y/n's neck. "But, you won't know how sensitive she is until you've made her come 5 times in a night." He murmured in a low voice.
It made a shiver run up Y/n's spine and her skin ripple with goosebumps.
That made Preston shut up. "I need to go find someone to fuck seeing as you're not desperate enough yet." He decided, getting up and leaving them alone.
Both of them breathed a sigh of relief. Spencer tapped at her thigh, letting her know he felt her goosebumps.
"What's got you all nervous?" He asked, still so close to her face she could smell the alcohol on his breath.
Y/n took a leap of faith, looking up at Spencer instead of his hand. His perfectly pink lips were almost on hers as he darted out his tongue to dampen them.
She looked at them for a few seconds, letting her eyes shift from Spencer's eyes to his lips.
Spencer let her make the first move. She lent up to place her lips on his. Spencer deepened it with his tongue. Y/n could feel how possessive the kiss was. She couldn't help the feeling that the situation had evolved into something more.
Thankfully, no one thought much more of their kiss than it being something a couple would do.
They only stopped looking at each other when food was being placed in front of them.
"I refuse." Spencer started, causing Y/n's attention to drift back to him. "To be nice to him anymore. If he comes back over here, I'm going to tell him how I really feel." He vowed.
It shouldn't have been so hot. But it was. Somehow Spencer's attitude was both possessive and polite. A combo that Y/n had never experienced until now.
"You can see why my brother always ends up fighting with him." She said with a laugh, causing Spencer to nod.
"I just can't believe he'd be so disrespectful to anyone, but especially someone so far out of his league like you." Spencer was in complete disbelief. Y/n was essentially perfect, and no one had the right to treat her like that.
She just shrugged. "I guess some people are just like that."
Still, he didn't want the conversation to be about someone so meritless. "You know, we could always murder him." He suggested in a low voice, just in case Y/n said 'yes.'
She giggled at that, landing on a smile that was Spencer's favorite. "You're willing to go down for murder with me?" She asked.
Spencer shook his head before nodding. "No... Well, I would. But, we'd be able to get away with it." He assured her with a smile. "Plus, New York only holds a minimum sentence of 20 years for 1st-degree murder. DC has one of 30 years."
Y/n frowned at him. "I'm very concerned about how you know that." She told him. "We need to stop talking about murder and converse like normal people." She reminded him, looking around at everyone else around the table.
"Oh, absolutely." Spencer agreed with a smirk, still not taking his eyes off her.
Y/n looked away from him, taking a sip of water. She could still feel his eyes on hers. "What are you up to?" She asked with a smile as she met his gaze.
"Just admiring." He quietly replied before turning away.
The rest of dinner went normally. It was actually rather fun.
After dinner and a too-long speech from Y/n's mom, the dance floor was lit up.
"So, are you going to come dance with me, Spence?" Y/n asked, getting up out of her chair.
Spencer instinctively shook his head, not daring himself to look up at her. He would probably agree with anything she said. "I don't dance and especially not to disco music." He insisted.
Y/n was pouting when he looked up at her. "But you'll come to watch at least, right?" She asked holding out her hands, so she could drag him up.
"If you swear I won't have to dance to club music." He tried to reason. The truth was, as soon as he'd looked up at her, he knew he was ruined.
Y/n desperately nodded. "Does that mean I can have a ballroom dance later on?" She asked with a little smirk. Y/n couldn't deny she was enjoying seeing Spencer all shy again.
Spencer nodded, placing his hands in hers. Y/n didn't waste a second pulling him up. She dragged him over to some of the seats around the dance floor, where the other grumbling boyfriends sat.
"Stay here, and converse." She instructed.
Spencer raised an eyebrow at her, knowing she should realize he wasn't going to talk to anyone else.
Y/n giggled at that. "Alright, fine." She turned her attention away from him, waving someone over. "Spencer, this is Elliot, Elliot, be nice. Oh, and no stories about my teenage years." She instructed, sitting someone down next to Spencer. Bossy wasn't a side Spencer got to see of her much. Occasionally with an unsub but never outside of the BAU.
With that, she was off. Spencer turned to the brunette with a vibrant pink tie to shake his hand.
"You must be the Doctor Spencer Reid I've heard so much about," Elliot said, shaking his hand.
Spencer internally groaned, trying to figure out if Elliot's information had come from Preston or someone that didn't hate him.
He was apprehensive about what he was about to ask. "Good things?"
Elliot nodded enthusiastically. "I went to high school and college with Addison." Spencer smiled at that, happy that Y/n's friends seemed to like him. He hadn't been this eager to impress anyone since he joined the BAU.
"I would love to hear about what she was like as a teenager," Spencer commented, fully prepared to break Y/n's rule. "She refuses to tell me any stories." He added, not even needing to fake how long he'd wanted to know more about her.
Elliot chuckled, looking out to the dance floor at Y/n. "Wild. Wilder than Addison once she'd had enough to drink." He claimed.
Spencer was listening to his words, but his attention was on the girl having the time of her life on the dance floor. Her hips were swaying to the music, and he could see the big smile on her face. He couldn't take his eyes off her if he wanted to.
"One time, we were out here actually, and Y/n was blackout drunk trying to get with me. It was hilarious." Elliot retold the story with a laugh. Spencer's eyes widened, snapping to Elliot. Objectively, Elliot was alright-looking, but Y/n was gorgeous. Spencer wasn't sure why Elliot would turn her down. "Oh, we didn't hook up." Elliot noticed the jealous look on Spencer's face. "My boyfriend, Justin, is over there." He explained, pointing out another guy on the dance floor.
"Oh." Spencer nodded, feeling a lot more reassured. Subjectively he thought Elliot was far better looking than himself. He could look back to Y/n then.
Spencer didn't need to lie. He knew it as he watched her throw her arms up in the air. "Yeah, more than anything else in the world." No book would ever come close.
There weren't any more questions before the music changed, switching to a slow song.
"Why do I have the feeling we're about to get dragged onto the dance floor?" Elliot asked with a laugh.
Spencer nodded, getting up. "Why prolong the inevitable?" He suggested, going over to the dance floor. Elliot shrugged, following suit.
Y/n grinned at him as she saw him walk over. "I'm glad I didn't have you drag you over here." She quipped, wrapping her arms around his neck, slightly swaying to the music.
Spencer laughed at her. "I did promise." He reminded her, placing his hands on her hips. His thumbs sprayed all the way out to her waist.
Y/n hummed and they started dancing. It surprised Spencer that he didn't trip over her feet, despite his abysmal dance skills. Especially with how close they were, her body pressed up against his usually making him flustered.
Y/n rested her head on his shoulder, whispering into his ear. "People are staring at us." She mentioned.
Spencer turned them around so he could see the 3 girls glaring at her. "Well, let's make them jealous." He decided, turning them around, so everyone had a clear view of both Y/n and Spencer's side profiles.
Y/n moved her head off his shoulder, looking up into his eyes with a confused smile. Spencer explained with his actions, placing his lips onto hers gently. Y/n kissed back, tightening her grip around his neck.

He turned around to nod at her before waving goodbye.

"Thanks for carrying my shoes," Y/n told him, nudging his shoulder.
Spencer grinned. "It's always a pleasure, baby." He replied.
He was just about to lean down to kiss her again when the most obnoxious voice he had ever heard spoke. "Sure you don't want to come home with me, Y/n?" Preston asked in his irritating voice. It made Spencer hold Y/n tighter.
Y/n rolled her eyes. "Never."
"Again," Preston added with a smirk. "Y/n-"
Spencer interrupted him before he could hit on Y/n again. "We've actually got things to do. You know, in the bedroom?" He explained with a condescending tone. "Oh, wait, you wouldn't know because it looks like you're leaving alone." He taunted, looking around Preston to prove his point.
With that, Y/n grabbed his hand and pulled him upstairs. As soon as they got into their bedroom, Y/n jumped up and down.
"Spencer, that was so totally awesome!" She cheered with a huge grin.
Spencer hadn't been sure it was the right thing to say but he still smiled at how happy she looked. "Just doing my job." He figured, trying to play it off as cool.
Y/n was overcome by how nobly Spencer defended her. She flung herself onto her, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Spencer placed a hand on her hips, holding her closer.
When Y/n pulled back she copied what Spencer had done on the dance floor, pushing her lips onto his.
Spencer kissed her back firmly, only pulling back when Y/n trailed a hand down his chest almost reaching his belt.
She frowned at him, tilting her head. "You're drunk, Y/n. Let's just go to sleep." He explained.
Y/n shook her head. "No, I swear I'm not, Spence."
"You are. Alcohol triggers a dopamine release which makes you feel good. Did you know 96.7% of women admit feeling happy after drinking?" Spencer rambled, trying to put some distance between him and Y/n. "There's also some transference, I'm sure. Seeing an ex can make all those old feelings stir up again." He told her.
Y/n shook her head again. "No, I don't feel anything but contempt for him." She replied. "I swear I'm not just doing this because I'm drunk." She pleaded. "I didn't drink a single thing since dinner." She assured him.
She knew Spencer didn't want to take advantage of her.
"5 drinks still puts your blood alcohol level around 0.12, which is legally intoxicated." Spencer tried to reason.
Y/n didn't know what else to say, so she smashed her lips back onto Spencer's. "Spence, I really want this." She hummed against his lips.
Spencer pulled back to look into her eyes, checking they weren't blood-shocked or glassy. When he decided they weren't, he smashed his lips back onto hers. Y/n tugged at his shirt, managing to pull it out of his pants.
He shrugged off his jacket, dumping it on the floor. Then, he trailed his fingers up her spine, making her shiver, before taking a hold of the zip.
Spencer pulled away for a second. "If you want me to stop, just tell me." He told her, toying with the zip.
Y/n shook her head rapidly. "No, Spence, please keep going." She pleaded.
Spencer chuckle at how desperate she seemed and drew the zip down slowly. He let the dress pool at her feet, gazing down at her body.

Y/n shook her head. "No, Spence, calm down." She replied. "Maybe get some ice too." She mentioned, looking in the mirror at the bruises on her neck. Spencer nodded, still looking concerned at her. "Maybe some chocolate too, please?" She asked.
Spencer nodded, placing a kiss on her forehead before walking off.

Spencer walked over, putting some things on the nightstand before returning to the closet. When he came back, he was dressed in fresh boxers, and he had some of Y/n's pajama shorts in his hand.
"Here." He handed them over to her to slip on. Then, he showed her what he'd acquired in the kitchen. "Eat these." He instructed, giving her the pumpkin seeds, which she ate with a frown.
"Chocolate?" Y/n asked, trying to reach past him to get it.
Spencer handed her half the block of chocolate. "Are you ready for this ice pack?" He asked, holding it up.
Y/n nodded, adjusting her shorts lower so he could put the ice pack on her skin. "Fuck, that's cold." She grimaced, trying to move away from him.
Spencer rolled his eyes at her, continuing to freeze her skin.
"Is it actually doing anything?" Y/n complained.
"It will reduce the size of it because it makes the blood flow slower and-"
Y/n shook her head. "Please, no facts right now. I love listening to them, but I'm so tired." She begged, holding Spencer's face in her palm.
"That's the oxytocin wearing off. Did you know it also helps reduce stress levels, making you relax?" Spencer started.
Once again, Y/n could know how quickly he could start rambling. "Alright, sleep time, pretty boy." She instructed, tapping his face.
Spencer nodded, taking away the ice pack and switching off the light. Y/n didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around him. Spencer followed suit, rubbing circles onto her back. Both of them quickly falling asleep.
