HI :) my name is Emma, I'm 18 and I live in Europe. I'm studying to become a beauty therapist, and I decided to blog the stuff I learn, cause I figured since I find some of these tricks and facts are helpful for my day to day life, other people might too. I know most people think Beauty Therapy is superficial and materialistic, but I assure you it isn't just about make up and how to be pretty. Its main topic is health and well being :)

nail polish fact

putting nail polish remover to an old nail polish to prevent it from thickening is considered to be a 'beauty tip' but no!

if you apply nail polish remover to the nail polish it will ruin it. nail polish remover contains some kind of oil to counteract the drying effect it has to the nail. The oil and nail polish don't have the same chemical structure so if you apply it to the nail polish, they won't mix for long  = they will separate = nail polish is ruined.

SUNBURN REMEDY

Before you say anything, no thats not a swamp monster, it me looking fabulous ;) I wasn't sure if I should post this cause I look like the fricken Gila monster, but I thought this might help someone out there. 

So I went to the beach, and got super sunburnt, my face especially hurt like hell. I applied aftersun lotion, a hydrating commercial face mask, but nothing really worked. So I decided to try out a home made mask. I know it looks icky but it works! here is what you'll need: 

Ginger - if you have fresh ginger just grate a little bit, or if you have powdered, it works fine too. ginger helps reduce inflammation.

white teabag - open the teabag and use the stuff inside it. this absorbs the UV from your skin, but don't over do it as this might stain the skin.

oats - it sooths and helps relief itchiness.

Calamine - this may not be commonly found in a household, so you can do without it, but if you have some use it as it sooths and reduces redness.

rosewater - same as calamine, it sooths and helps make the paste more runny.

olive/coconut/almond oil - any type of natural oil works. oil will work as a barrier to prevent water loss from the skin. After sunburn, the skin gets pretty much dehydrated, so oil will help lock moisture in the skin.

apply the amount needed, depending on the area being treated, make sure not to make it too runny as it won't stay in place, or too stiff as it won't be spreadable, so try adding the right amount of oil and rose water to it.

how to cover red areas on the face.

so you apply concealer and foundation, but you can still see that redness on your cheeks or that annoying spot? I've been there. 

3 words. green corrective concealer. wait what? let me explain. have you ever heard of the colour wheel? if no, welcome to planet Earth my love - seriously, google it. if yes, you should know that the opposite colour of red is green, which means that green 'neutralises' redness. There you have it. 

There are several different shades of corrective concealers, but today I'll only be mentioning the green one as its the most common. 

Basically all you need to do is: 1. apply the usual face primer if you usually use it, 2. then apply some of this green corrective concealer on needed areas - don't over do it, and don't stretch the products too much or it won't be effective. the most common are cheeks and nose area, of some red spots. 3. then apply foundation, regular concealer, powder and continue as usual. 

There are several types, the most common ones are sticks, or jars. I've tried a bunch of different brands and types, and I have to say my fav one is in a jar by NXY, They also have a green primer which evens out redness - its no miracle, but it helps.

what is that one product you can't live without?

hmm tough one. this probably isn't what you're expecting but I have to say eyebrow pencil. my eyebrows suck, the hairs are so far apart one another! I wish I had full brows.. I think the brows frame the face. you can change your brows' thickness and arch how ever you like. in my opinion it totally transforms the face - eyebrows and contouring is what really enhances your features. But yeah, if I had to choose just 1 make up product I could wear throughout the day I'd choose an eyebrow pencil.

its important to apply a mask once or twice a week. there are different types of masks.. peel off masks, commercial masks and natural home made masks are the easiest to use.

PMS remedies.

Hi there Ladies. I'm sure we all agree that PMS sucks. BIG TIME. I was doing some research for school and I came across some remedies: 

I read that you should avoid vegetable oil, peanut oil, margarine.. instead of those use coconut oil, butter, uncooked olive oil and eat lots of omega 3 food - such as salmon, cod, almonds and walnuts.

Magnesium oil: rub it on the skin / or magnesium powder.

VItamin D helps. a good source of vitamin D is the sun. So try spending some time in the sun - don't over do it + apply suncream.

ginger capsules.

mild exercise such as stretching, walking or swimming.

sleep! I can't stress this enough, I  read this on almost every website I found. Its important to get a good night sleep. I mean lets face it, this isn't hard to follow is it? who doesn't love sleep?

I haven't tried these remedies yet, I just found out about these so I'm not sure if they work or not. But I think the most reasonable ones are getting enough sleep and vitamin D.

I assume that Ginger capsules might also be effective cause I've heard something about it before but again, I'm not entirely sure it works.

Home Made Vanilla Sugar Body Scrub

this is my fav home made body scrub :D I LOVEEEE vanilla so I guess thats why haha. the sugar granules will work as an exfoliator i.e. it will remove the first layer (dead cells) of the skin, leaving your skin looking brighter and healthier.

what you'll need: 

2 1/2 cups of raw sugar.

3/4 cup of white granulated sugar.

4 tablespoons of vanilla extract.

1/4 cup of almond oil.

get a bowl, add the raw and granulated sugar. then just add the vanilla extract and almond oil. easy peasy. 

this won't trigger any allergies unless you're allergic specifically to Vanilla, almond oil or sugar, cause its quite sensitive hence its natural ingredients - the scent isn't very concentrated either.

dry vs. dehydrated skin.

moisture is essential to the skin, no moisture = no flexibility = fine lines & wrinkles. about 99.9999% of the population say that dry and dehydrated is the same thing. NO. We've got 2 different types of fluid substances in the skin. 

1. water. lack of water causes dehydration, therefore its called dehydrated skin. Dehydration may cause flakes on the skin, orange peel appearance, poor circulation, very tight pores and premature skin. not very attractive huh?

what can make it better? duh, drink lots and lots of water, and use hydration moisturisers. 

2. oil. lack of oil means that there is lack of sebaceous gland activity. the sebaceous gland produces sebum aka oil in our body. in some cases, this gland can be too active which causes oily skin, but in this case the gland is producing less oil than what is needed.this may cause small, tight pores, skin texture becomes thin and sensitive, broken capillaries and white heads are present, pale and matt looking skin, early signs of wrinkles.

what can make it better? drinking plenty of water will help, and use a rich oil-based moisturiser .

Home Made face Mask for dry skin #1.

1 table spoon of full fat natural yoghurt

1 tablespoon of fine oatmeal

1/2 banana

find a gauze, cut holes for your eyes, nose, mouth, and rinse it in rose water so it becomes moist - if you don't have rose water use regular water - this will make the gauze stick to the face. you can try and skip this part, but I think the mixture will be runny and it'll fall off your face. the gauze will help the mask stay in place. 

mix the yoghurt, oatmeal and the mashed banana together. 

cover eyes with damp cotton wool, put the gauze on your face, and apply the mixture on top of the gauze (as seen in the picture below). applying it yourself might be tricky, so ask someone to apply the mixture on your face while you lay horizontally. leave for 8 - 10 minutes. then rinse, and apply a good moisturiser to your skin.

I suggest doing this once a week.

whats your skin type?

knowing your own skin type is very helpful when it comes to buying face products. I'm gonna help you figure out your skin type as much as I can. remove all your make up, cleanse and tone your skin - we need the skin to be as clean as possible for this. also, make sure your hands are clean too. 

today I'll be covering sensitive skin. 

PS: If you have these symptoms doesn't mean you're a 100% sensitive. you can have a combination skin type. eg: oily & sensitive. you'll understand better once I post about all the skin types.

first off. do you see any redness? it doesn't have to be super red, I'm talking about redder areas than the rest of the face. the most common are usually nose/cheek area, but in some cases the redness spreads trough out all the face and neck. that redness indicates sensitivity.

are you allergic to anything? as in, have you ever tried a product and you felt like it was burning your skin or left any marks?

other signs of sensitivity are broken capillaries, and blotchy appearance.

so thats basically sensitive skin in a nutshell. I'll be posting about oily skin next.

how to get rid of that pimple

this happened to me EVERYTIME something important came up. I used to freak out about it, until I found this trick. toothpaste. yep, you read it right. what I do is apply toothpaste on the particular blemished area and leave it overnight. then I rinse it in the morning, and the pimple dries out. I suggest you apply  a good moisturizer to it so it doesn't become flaky.  #truestory easy huh?

want whiter teeth?

you wash your teeth every day, but they aren’t as white as you’d like them to be. want a cheap, easy way to whiten your teeth?

all you’ll need is 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a few mashed strawberries, and mix them together. Put the paste on your toothbrush and brush brush brush! do this for a few days and you’ll see the results! easy huh?
