I have said it before but (mostly cis) men have the situational awareness of a fucking gnat and then become irritated when women are more aware of their surroundings. A dude on TikTok made a video about basic etiquette for male hikers to follow to keep from frightening solo female hikers and it was common curtesies like “announce your presence to avoid startling a fellow hiker” and “do not follow women” and “do not ask potentially concerning questions like ‘are you alone?’” and you would have thought he asked these men to transfer $10k to a woman’s bank account right now. Asking why they should INCONVENIENCE themselves to make women safe, mocking women for being afraid of strangers on trails. Bitch, your rugged masculinity will not save you from a guy with a knife in a secluded place. No, other humans are generally not the greatest threat on a hike but you should still remain aware of them and lone women have a completely valid reason to try to avoid strangers, I’m sorry if that hurts your little feelings.
