A female Cuvier’s beaked whale is headed down. Down past the birds. Down past the fish. Down past where light can reach. She’s already in the twilight zone. Soon her lungs will collapse, the negative buoyancy pulling her further down like a sinking bullet. Down down down into the inky black abyss. At 2 kilometres depth she’s in her element. Here she hunts, fighting the squid that over the years have marred her face with scars. She will stay down here as long as it takes. One hour. Two hours. Three, four. It is only the mammalian condition that forces her upwards again. Towards life, towards light. And that crucial breath.

A little painting to celebrate the new mammalian dive record. Previously held by a Cuvier’s beaked whale who dove down to 2992 metres, staying under for 2 hours and 17 minutes. Yesterday news came out that a fellow Cuvier’s broke that record. They stayed down for no less than 3 hours and 42 minutes. Almost four hours without breath. What must it be like to spend life like this, divided between the warm, sun-filled waters, and the absolute blackness of the freezing deep?

The author should have thought a bit more about the issue of taking away a spotlight, then maybe she would have noticed how this movie takes away from the Tibetans. But she was more concerned with her cultural pride and Western stereotypes and “inaccurate” representations apparently. Doing all this to Tibetans seems fine to her. And of course there is the infamous map that claims the majority of the South China sea and all of Taiwan.

Actress Chloe Bennet either has no idea at all or she lies her ass off. Not only is the film Abominable itself incredibly politically correct ... politically correct in China, of course (with its infamous map and "Tibet belongs to China"), but in her view, the plot had to begin in China to get to the Himalayas? Why not in Nepal or Buthan? Or Myanmar or India, Bangladesh or Tajikistan? If China is okay, why not these countries too? After all, they are not occupying Tibet!

I hope that MULAN will bomb hard, since I am tired of this constant sucking up to China, but I fear that racist Asians in the Western world and those in China will not let it fail as the story, sadly, lends itself very well to be used for Chinese nationalism, racism and xenophobia.

Not only does Dreamwork ommit Chinese oppression of the Tibetans, now they even support the 9 dash line and apparently the conquest of Taiwan. Great job Dreamwork, you get sensitive about some stupid words but you sell out to an oppressive and colonialist regime.

I am between a rock and a hard place in this case. One the one hand I don't want Disney to dominate the animated scene so much, on the other hand this Dreamworks film is another attempt to suck up to China and that by using something from Tibet of all places. If at least all these whiners who e.g. screamed racism and whitewashing in Dr. Strange would say something here of China's human rights abuses in Tibet, but apparently they are silent. I could not find a single article about Tibetan erasure or something.
