This week marks the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the release of Ms. Marvel #01 (February 5th, 2014). The issue meant the return of Ms. Marvel to the Marvel Universe, but instead of Carol Danvers wearing the suit, it was one of her biggest fans: Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Muslim shapeshifter who decided to take the name of her idol Carol when she discovered her powers.

Aside from being female, a demographic already woefully under-represented in mainstream comics, she’s a young teenager with normal teenage problems; over-bearing parents, a sibling rivalry with an older brother, a cute boy who’s been a friend until now, a small set of trusted friends, and a general inability to be part of the “popular” crew.
