Formatting your Manuscript
If youāre planning on one day turning your manuscript in to literary agents and publishing houses, you need to make sure itās formatted correctly. In many cases, your manuscript will be skipped over if it isnāt done to industry standard, so hereās the basics that youāll need if you donāt want to be ignored. Before I get started, please know that this is aimed specifically atĀ fiction manuscripts. If youāre writing non-fiction or a memoir, the expectations will be different, so it would be wise to Google what you need.
The Basics
Make sure your font is 12 point Times New Roman, Courier New, or Arial. These are the only three fonts you are allowed to pick from.
Your spacing should be 1 inch on all sides of the text. This is the default on most word processors, but double check your settings just to be sure.
Your text should be double spaced.
All of your indentations must be a half inch. Do not press indent. Instead, drag over the top arrow on the ruler to have every new paragraph automatically indent.
The Title Page
The top left-hand corner of your title page will have all your personal information. They want to see your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, the novelās genre, and word count.
Your novelās title is allowed to be between 20-24 point font if you want. Bold is also an option, but not necessary.
The title will appear halfway down the title page.
āA novel by [your name]ā will be about three quarters of the way down the page.
The Next Pages
If you have a dedication, it will be on its own page.
If you have some sort of verse or quote, those will also need their own pages.
Do not include a page for acknowledgements.
The Chapters
Chapter titles will be 12 point font. No bolding or italics.
Chapters will start from one quarter to halfway down the page.
An easy way to format chapter headings is to press enter five or six times
Make sure you always start your chapters the same way every time.
When you start a new chapter, make sure you use a page break to bump the new chapter onto a new page. This will keep it in place so that it will never budge, no matter how much you cut out or add to the previous chapter.
Page Numbers
Page numbers will start with 1 on Chapter 1 of your manuscript. Page numbers will not appear on the title page or dedication page.
Page 1 will be labeled in the footer of Chapter 1. It should be centered.
Page 2 will be in the header of the next page.
From page 2 onward, your headers will be labeled like this:
If you insert a section break after the title and dedication pages, it will make it easier to insert the page numbers.
For the most part, this is the most important of what youāll need to know for formatting your manuscript. I used this video as reference, so Iām trusting everything it says is true because it was made by an author who has several novels published, and because it was uploaded this year, it should be up to date.
But just remember, whenever you go to turn in a manuscript, make sure you check the website of the agent or publisher youāre trying to contact. They might have specifications that differ with the ones stated in this video, and you should always do whatever you can to abide by what they want.
Reblogging aggressively. Some publishers will throw your manuscript into the slush pile or, worse, the trash if you donāt follow their desired format. Spec fic publishers are especially strict about manuscript formatting.
Also reblogging aggressively.

HALLOWEEN IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER SO HEREāS YOUR FRIGHTFUL REMINDER TO NOT APPROPRIATE CULTURES AND DEMONIZE OTHERS:
1. Disrespecting Native-American culture Ā
Dressing up a Native American is an absolute NO-NO. Especially those gross ass āSexy Indianā costumes. Their culture is not a costume and it sure as hell shouldnāt be sexualized. Millions of Native Americans were slaughtered by the hands of greedy white men and they did not die for a bunch inconsiderate folks to use their culture as a costume. This goes for ANYONE WHO IS NOT NATIVE AMERICAN.Ā This has got to be one of the worst costume ideas and doing so is an insult to indigenous tribes and communities. DONāT DO IT.Ā
2. Blackface
Noā¦ā¦ justā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦. no. Donāt be the yt person who has to put on an embarrassingly bold amount of bronzer to make yourself look like the black person youāre dressing up as. Itās straight up racist and youāre just gonna make yourself look like a damn fool. Blackface goes beyond putting on the extra bronzer and humiliating us. The bronzer is able to come off at night but black people canāt take their skin and oppression off at night. The police brutality canāt come off at night, the violence of white supremacy canāt come off at night. So please, donāt use black skin as your stylish look for the night.Ā
3. Ableist costumes
This one isnāt talked about much but it still matters very much. āMental Patientā and āP*ychoā costumes are extremely offense to people who are suffering with mental illness. It demonizes people who are battling these illnesses, and it makes them look violent and dangerous. When in reality, only 3-5% of violence acts are linked with mental illness.Ā Ā If you really wanna dress like someone with a mental illness then you can go in your closet and put on the normal type of clothes you would literally wear any other fucking day of the year. Stop demonizing people with mental illnesses because of what you see in the horror movies. Itās ableist and gross.Ā
4. Islamophobic CostumesĀ
Muslims already have to go through enough with defending their religion against Islamophobes. Donāt be the asshole on Halloween who sustains the stereotype that Islam supportsĀ āterrorismā. If you are not a Muslim do not dress in any of the Islamic attire for costume and do not be obnoxious and attach bombs/ other explosives to the attire. Itās disgusting and does nothing but demonize a religion that is heavily ridiculed in America. This also goes for appropriating any other religious attire for costume and mocking purposesā¦ā¦ it aināt cute.Ā
5. Xenophobic costumes
Costumes that mock Mexican immigrants/border control is blatantly xenophobic and not funny. In reality, immigrants have a super hard time trying to start a new life in the U.S and itās nothing to joke around about. ICE agents are barging into peopleās homes to arrest for simply trying to start over and provide for their families. Making costume out of a serious humanitarian issue just makes you look ignorant and inconsiderate of the thousands of immigrants who are struggling to live here everyday.Ā
There are hundreds of other Halloween costumes out there that doesnāt involve disrespecting marginalized groups of people.Ā Itās not that hard to dress up as something without mocking a culture or being ignorant towards a serious problem. I wish all good people are safe and happy Halloween season and do so while being mindful of other peopleās lifestyles!!Ā
Halloween is coming donāt be a dick! Keep it fun.
i rather you guys put a sheet over urself and call urself a ghost than wear these disgusting ass costumes
