This is dangerous, cuz I've never wanted to blog without real reason, but sometimes I just want to throw my thoughts into the digital abyss. Sorry, I'll try not to be too annoying... but I will rant.... cuz I'm quite ranty.....

Happy 30th Birthday to Neil Gaiman’s Sandman; one of the most influential pieces of recent literature for me. I first read it when my newly made college friends were shocked that I had never heard of it and let/forced me barrow their copies. I have since bought my own copies, sadly more then once, and read it from start to finish quite a few times. Many of my thoughts on storytelling and myth come from reading this Epic series. Even my computer and tablet are named in honor of characters from Sandman, Gilbert and Delirium if you’re curious..

Enough Is Enough

I was in middle school when Columbine happened and college when Virginia Tech happened. Since then I have seen Sandy Hook, Pulse, Parkland and countless others. Since I was a kid nothing has been done to effective stop gun violence in America. It is a disgrace! People are dying; not just in mass shootings, but on a daily basis from congresses’ failure to enact proper gun control. My heart and my mind goes out there with all those walking out today. Enough is Enough... It has been Enough for far too long...

Thank you for cheering us on at auditions. Thank you for celebrating with us when the cast list comes out. Thank you for driving us to rehearsals. Thank you for your support during tech week. Thank you for the snacks you provide. Thank you for watching our show once, twice, maybe even three times or more. Thank you for still smiling and laughing even when you’ve listened to the joke or song over and over again. Thank you for the hugs when the Post Show Blues hits. Thank you for asking us about our favourite shows. Thank you for trying to understand all of our terminology. Thank you for understanding why we like to get to a show early and stare in awe at the theatre. Thank you for waiting in the cold while we all obsess over the actors we see on stage. Thank you for for being wonderful, even if you aren’t a theatre fan yourself. Thank you for the endless support. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Wait a minute—that crab looks funny!

Eagle-eyed staffers recently discovered a surprise guest in our pelagic red crab display: a young red octopus casually cruising the exhibit! 

This crafty stowaway must have found a perfect hideout in the rocky nook of Monterey Bay shale. 

After weeks of stealth, it grew big and bold enough to walk out into the open, where it was finally caught red-tentacled. 

For the safety of its tank mates, the cunning cephalopod has been moved behind the scenes, and will likely make an appearance in our red octopus exhibit in a few months!

I think that people easily forget...

That the oldest of the Millennials are 36 years old.

In fact, some charts have them ending as early as 1995.

So if you were born between ‘95 and 2000 you could be either a Millennial or Gen Z.

I think the point I’m trying to make here is that most people talk about Millennials as if they’re all clueless teenagers when in reality they’re likely between the ages of 20-36.

What Ireland Means To Me

This St. Patrick’s Day, like all St. Patrick’s Days after 2013, I’m feeling really nostalgic for Galway. It’s a bitter sweet holiday for me because the American idea of Ireland, and this day which is thought to celebrate Irishness, conflicts with the truth, specifically on a personal level. Thinking about it now I see that what Ireland and Irishness is to me is vastly different than what it means to everyone else. This is probably true of every place, particularly when it is deeply personal. To me Ireland is the friends I made, both native and fellow immigrants, who I hung out in pubs, walked cobbled streets, and created with for two years. It’s the artists, intellectuals, and performers who I worked with and had long, sometimes half-drunk, conversations with. It’s Galway first and Dublin last. It’s sitting on The Long Walk reading, sipping coffee in a cafe while I write a review, and putting on a play without a production company. To me Ireland is not fuzzy green hats and grossly inaccurate cultural stereotypes. It’s not even the distant past of long dead ancestors. To me Ireland will always be Galway about five years ago and that can not be accurately explained in words; so I’ve included some photos I found which I feel reflect what Ireland means to me. To all those I met and worked with in those two years; know that I still think of you fondly and miss you deeply.

I Can’t Do It Any More

I am sorry; I can not do it any more. 

Since I recovered from being sick all Tuesday with a fever (which of course didn’t stop me from voting) I have rolled so many things around in my head. I wanted to dig deep and research how meany didn’t vote and how and why so meany Americans could choose fear and hate. I wanted to call now more then every for an end to the division in this country. I wanted to explain how the Electoral College is meant to stop people like Trump, but is so broken at this point it is unlikely to work.

I wanted so bad... but I can’t. I’m tired and it wouldn’t make a difference anyway. It’s not that I don’t care, it’s not that this all doesn’t make me angry or scared; it does on so many counts. I just can’t.

I’ve had a play in my head for nearly three years now. It is the most difficult piece I’ve written in my life on so many levels and I have been struggling to make progress on it for the last few months now. Quite a few people know about this and have offered heart felt reactions. Though it’s deeply personal it is my work and extremely important to me as an artist. I need, NEED to focus on my work right now. On top of that I am still trying to get my life back together, and that has been a roller-coaster ride all to it’s self.

I’ve seen many a cry from my fellow artists to “MAKE ART” as an ultimate reaction to all that has happened and probably will happen. Perhaps I should take that to heart; not in the sense of making political commentary, or changing people’s minds, or even distracting people from the horribleness that is sure to come, but to tell stories. Because that is all I can do; that is what I’m good at. I can not save the world, as much as I wish i could, but I can tell the world a story. Not a happy story or a story to make all this change, but an important story, a human story.
