Buck catches his gaze from across the room and grins too. For a while, they pretend everything is normal. Eddie slips his gloves on and throws jabs at the punching bag in front of him; Buck lifts weights with Ravi spotting him. And then, Eddie sees Chimney out of the corner of his eye. Three. Two. One. A high-pitched scream rings across the firehouse, followed by a terrified, “Who did this?” Eddie pauses and looks at Buck. He finds Buck looking back at him already, weights discarded.

It takes them three seconds to break, both bursting into laughter at the same time.

Ravi sighs. “What did you guys do now?”

“Nothing,” they reply in unison, convincing absolutely no one.

Hen, with a smile threatening to bloom on her face, shows up, arms crossed over her chest. “Alright, which one of you filled Chimney’s office with plastic snakes?”

Eddie and Buck exchange glances… and once again burst into laughter.

“I’m innocent,” Ravi says quickly.

Hen doesn’t even attempt a stern look. She just says, “Next time let me in on it,” high-fiving Eddie, then Buck.

Eddie grins. “Deal.”

He always loses his helmet; that’s not really a surprise. If anything, it’s expected. The department would probably be more upset about the loss of equipment than they actually are if Buck were a less skilled firefighter. But Buck’s skill doesn’t stop Eddie from worrying. Buck grins tiredly, chest heaving from exertion. Eddie beckons him over and places a hand on his shoulder blade the moment he’s close enough. “Alright, let me check you out,” he says, hiding his worry. It’s unwelcome here, and it would be too if their situations were reversed.

Buck sits in the back of the ambulance and lets Eddie look him over. There are no major injuries, so Eddie wipes the blood, sweat, and dirt off his face, stitches closed the small gash over his eyebrow, then puts some arnica gel over the bruises on his torso.

“All set, Dr Diaz?” Buck asks—quips—after Eddie’s done, when they’ve just been sitting in silence for a while, Eddie’s eyes unable to leave Buck’s even now.

“Yeah,” he murmurs, “all done.”

Buck smiles again, but he doesn’t leave. He doesn’t look away either.

Eddie holds his gaze and breathes.
