I'm still not there?
Why don't we forget we ever felt a thing.
Skipping Thanksgiving. Kthxbye.
Returning
I originally started this blog style tumblr so that I could record my time in Madrid. But I can't stand the idea of leaving this blog up like a discontinued journal so I'm going to continue writing in it while I am still in the States. This just might just become a travel blog. From the mundane to the luxurious, I believe there's much to be gained no matter where you go. However, I might archive this blog using my new wordpress. So watch out.
Last Kiss
5 August 2011
Friday evening, we went to Cien Montaditos for our non-official good-bye dinner with some other Intrax kids. I had the class patata fritas con cuatro quesos and a jarra de tinto de verano. After spending much time sitting and shooting the breeze while Jordan and Andrew (another Intrax kid) had their bromance action. Jer-bear got these awesome beer shaped sunglasses, I was so envious my eyes were green. Afterwards, we had a botellon in Parque Oeste where the Templo de Bod now resides. Andrew was kind enough to share his wonderful red wine. We met some random guys that another Intrax girl, Maxi, met and they were relatively interesting. We stayed until about 2:30am-3:00am before I booked it out of there.
P.S. Too much red wine can make your stomach very angry.
Happy Birthday
4 August 2011
Kara and Sammy both had their birthdays on the same day so we all went to Lateral for a joint birthday dinner. All I can say is, "I love cake." Lateral has the most amazing chocolate cake with nata (whipping cream) on the side. It's to die for. Afterwards, we went to Enbabia where Elisha got us some chupitos gratis. We danced the night away.
Another One for the Road
31 July 2010
Dear Rastro,
It has been fun. I am glad you were able to offer me an overpriced leather bag and cheap tourist items. You have offered me many strange and wonderful moments. A woman shoved a half eaten chicken empanada in my mouth, vendors that yell at me for asking to see merchandise, homeless men that refuse to barter prints… That was the life.
Sincerely,
Unimpressed Guiri
Week 9: Last WEEK?!
25-29 July 2011
Fernando C. spoke with me and told me that my last day would be this Friday. I was stunned; the internship doesn't officially end until August 6th so now I just have all this time. I finished the research I had and presented in a document to Fernando. It was very anti-climatic if anything.
There is a new girl, Maria, in the office. She's another computer/web engineer. As soon as she arrived, they all went to a meeting to discuss the goals for T-Reto. September 18th is the official launch date for T-Reto.com. Thursday after we had come back from our separate lunches, Maria and I had a little coffee at a nearby bar. She's such a fabulously interesting person filled with all these lives that and places I dream of seeing. That's what so interesting about Madrid, it brings everyone here. But as the week passed, I was slowly phased out of my office. My seat was relegated to the bar table and my new laptop was given to Maria. It was sad, but an evil of working at a startup with small resources.
I spoke to David, our CEO, telling him if he needed any more help marketing in the U.S., I would be happy to help. It was a very happy, bittersweet ending.
Jetsetting to Lisboa
22-24 July 2011
Friday
Elisha and I packed up and headed to Plaza de España to meet at the coach for Lisbon Portugal. It took about 8 hours with breaks which wasn't awful. It's a little longer than it takes me to get from Pittsburgh to Philladelphia during school so it was alright. We arrived at 10pm where we relaxed before we went out to dinner.
We walked to Barrio Alto, the bar and restaurant area where Elisha, other girls from her company, Forocio, and I had dinner. Portuguese people are most certainly not known for their gastronomia. Afterwards, we went out for cheap drinks and a dancing bar. It was so much fun but I got home much later and ended up passed out in bed.
I met some really awesome people that day. A group of kids from California and 2 others from Cincinnati. In fact, I met a lot of Asians that day, which was kind of nice, we bonded over missing rice and our mothers' food. The one guy with a mohawk, Andrew, was Viet as well so it was really interesting. One of the Forocio girls, Charlotte even tried to buy me a mojito which was so sweet of her.
Saturday
This is the story of every college student, but apparently I only slept for 5 hours and I checked my facebook to find that I had been on it at 5am. Mind you, I remember it but I had no idea the time. We went for a walking tour of the city where we ended up at the old fortess castle of Portugal. We stayed there for an hour and a half and took pictures on top of the city while exploring the city.
Afterwards, there was free time to walk around and get lunch. We wandered around a bit until we went to a Chinese buffet and then we went back to the hostal. We all loaded onto the bus around 3pm and headed for the BEACH! It was amazing and surprisingly cold at the beach. I still managed to catch some rays and had a white chocolate Magnum bar with my Smirnoff Ice. The water was so clear and freezing. Elisha and I sprinted to the showers to beat the crowds. We got back and had a Portuguese dinner with amazing wine.
We all went down to the docks where they have rows of dance clubs line the port and went to dance at one. I was only there for a bit until I took a cab back to Barrio Alto, the area we first partied in. It's actually the hottest tourist spot in Lisboa nonetheless it was shortlived and I soon retired at 3am.
Sunday
We woke up early and ran to get our things together and head for the bus. We spent about 8 hours on the bus until we were back home in the lovely Madrid.
Week 8: What I Know
18-21 July 2011
The communications person for T-Reto, Omar, had me continue with the Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is a compilation of businesses, contacts and sites that T-Reto would eventually get in contact with in order to collaborate on challenges for users. For the most part I use popular sites we've already obtained and search for any affiliates or other sites that are promoted through them.
I am still doing my research for the site. What's been interesting is that any U.S. marketing startup is an option which leaves me in a quandary is how to find a way to research which ones are best for T-Reto to use. On the bright side, one name stood apart from many others, Sarah Evans founder of Sevans Strategy. This woman has revolutionized the use of twitter for professionals. Evans used Twitter as a platform for journalists across the industry to communicate to each other.
Through researching I've found out more about the startup community in Pittsburgh and the businesses that congregate together. So that has shown to be interesting because they post their events on The Pittsburgh Business Times site, http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/.
Off to the Countryside
15-17 July 2011
This past weekend I went to Valladolid to see my friend's friend Mapaz. Her father, Pepe, and herself came to pick me up from the train station. They took me to their very chic apartment where I dropped off my stuff, then we all walked to Plaza Mayor. This is the largest and oldest plaza in Spain, there we had coffee, as always cafe con leche. In fact, they wouldn't let me pay for a thing that weekend. I asked her why and she simply replied, "You are my guest." Afterwards, she and I walked the city looking for a skirt. Then she took me out for ice cream but I ended up getting a sandwich because I had gotten on the wrong train and spent an extra 2 hours on it, thus missing lunch. Jámon and queso was never so delicious, they actually grilled it and was amazing. We had a little chat about American and Spanish food. I told her that people don't usually get angry with me when I tell them I find Spanish food a little unhealthy with lots of oil and no fresh vegetables. We surmised it was because I'm Vietnamese and partake less in American food. Seriously, the sweetest española I've met so far. On our way back to her flat, we met up with her mom and we all went back together. I met their bird, Fifi and this hedgehog they found. How does a hedgehog exist? Their spikes are super sharp and firmly attached into their skin. How does that happen? How do spikes just grow out of skin? I am seriously awestruck by this phenomenom. Then, they told me we were going out to their finca, farm. I was surprised when she said farm, but it's a few little villas that are close to each other and they all own a large portion of the land there. Her mother, Rana, drove us to their villa and then we changed into bathing suits and went to her aunt's villa nearby to sunbathe and relax by the small pool. Rana cooked us this amazing Spanish tapas dinner. There was sweet torilla española, soft pan and this jámon and bread dish. The red wine was just the cherry on top. That night, I had awful dreams of my teeth moving out of place and I was scared and alone. It's probably because being with her, sweet, kind and making this big honest effort to be my friend without some sort of agenda just made me feel so nostalgic and sad because here, I don't have that here. I know I keep uttering the same lines over and over again. But it's extraordinary how sharply you can feel so isolated and ostracised. Dreams about teeth are suppose to be stress-induced. I try to keep my feelings neutral, but it's hard not to take it personally. In the morning, I slept in and Mapaz fixed me breakfast and coffee. Then we went an lounged in the sun, I tried to keep reading On the Road but the sun was so strong and made me so sleepy. You'll be happy to hear I was practicing some basic yoga poses and stretches. When her father came back with groceried we had this huge 3 course meal. I tried blood sausage for the first time and it was delicious as I expected. Vietnamese people eat blood, too so I wasn't aghast by it. After lunch, we went and toured around to the historic areas and monuments. We saw some small villages, castles, monasteries, and hermitages. Later when we got into Valladolid, we met up with her friend, Alvaro, kind of strange but very sweet. We basically went around for tapas at different places. It was delicious, I had a lobster cucumber kebab, croqueta, and sepia = cuttlefish. It was a wonderful endless day. Sunday, we walked around the city and ate food, had coffee by the river and had ice cream by Plaza Mayor. We took a walk through the park where they had these beautiful peacocks and we both discussed our mutual love of Victoria's Secret. We agreed to have an exchange of Zara and Victoria's secret stuff twice a year. Then I left... But she says she would like to come into the city for a weekend to shop and stuff, so hopefully, we'll see each other again. When I came home, the house looked like it had been bulldozed. The living room was full of glasses, beer and liquor. The kitchen was a mess and overflowing with dishes. I cooked my dinner and tomorrow's lunch, then I washed my dishes.
Week 7: Life is Good
11-15 July 2011
After an exhausting weekend in the largest drinking festival of my young life. I settled back into my work week. I spent most of Monday talking to Pamela about her job as the graphic designer for the site. It was really interesting to see what they were doing with the site. It's much cleaner and minimalistic. The overall website before had too many colors and it was difficult to know which link went where.
My assignment for the rest of my time at T-Reto is to find ways and ideas to market to the U.S. users. Surprisingly enough, there are sites that cater specifically to startups and helping them to market and network. What I've found so far are tips on how to market your company through word of mouth and generally getting in touch with other startups. A large part of it is just knowing when to share your ideas and not prematurely advertising a product that isn't at its best. Searches for startup companies usually include "Startups to Watch For." Cloud computing along with Apple's latest move into the market seems to be of major interest right now. The next big thing as they see.
Pamplona: Another Kind of S*** Show
9-10 July 2011
Pamplona's Running of the Bulls is actually the celebration of San Fermin, the patron saint of Pamplona. The Running of the Bulls was initially publicized by Earnest Hemingway who was very much in love with Spain. Through his writings, he was able to provoke interest in his friends and other Americans.
I left Saturday afternoon and stayed up for 24 hours for the festivities. Elisha's tour company planned this excursion and basically they provide transportation and a guide to take you into the city square and then you go back to the arranged meeting place to go back to Madrid.
When we first arrived, everyone was dressed in red and white and the city was just overflowing with people; young, old, teenagers, small children and grandparents milling around and enthralled in the festivities. It slowly degraded as the night went on. People become total shit shows and wander the streets completely out of their minds. As midnight had well passed, you would find some people completely passed out and ravaged by the festivities lying next to dumpsters, on small patches of grass and men pissing on buildings at every corner. It became filthier and smellier, yet no one cared to enthralled by the music and lights. The thumping of the music is all over the streets, crawiling from small bars, and crashing from discotecas and the large outdoor concert. At one point during the night, there were even fireworks which makes up for my lack of proper July 4th cheer.
One interesting thing I came across was a huge scultpture of El Correo del Toros that also had a sculpture of an unfortunate man being stampeded over. On a nicer note, I bought red heart-shaped sunglasses for €3.
Around 6am, we found a decent spot to watch the bulls run through the street. There were 2 barricades to ensure the safety of the spectators. Elisha, our friend Sarah and I waited for 2 hours for the bulls. They came in 2 rounds and stayed in our sights for no more than a few moments. A friend of mine actually ran with the bulls which must have been quite an experience for him. Perhaps, I'll train for that in a couple years but I'm not getting any younger.
It was an experience of a lifetime but you need the right people to do it with and he right mindset.
Happy Birthday U.S.A.
4 July 2011
Ironically enough, I ended up celebrating the big 4th at the Hard Rock Café in Madrid. After work, Elisha and I met up with some people from the program there. I was really surprised by how messily it was all organized because I didn't find out about it until maybe an hour before it was "arranged." In fact, I was cooking right before we left.
Everyone had already eaten and we crashed the other Intrax group's dinner. It was great catching up with them. I had a delicous S.O.B. burger with half a plate of fries. Not knowing that the sauce on the side was extra spicy, I schmeared it aover my bun and regretted it. But when you pay €14 for a hamburger, there is no such thing as leftovers. After my tongue was thoroughly numb, I was okay. We went to a bar afterwards and relaxed for a half hour before we went home. After all, a Monday is still a Monday.
Week 5-6: De Muerto
August 27, 2011 - July 7, 2011
After a week in Ibiza, I was exhausted but somehow not as much as I thought. Luckily this week, didn't entail much besides besides just running through the pages of the current cr.t-reto.com. As I mentioned before this is just a testing site for mostly Costarican users. The internet has also been inconsistent and the Wifi for the agency below us is completely out so we've been sharing our cozy space which means we literally have 3 agencies in this one middle school classroom sized room. While that means forfeiting a lot of productivity, we have to deal with it. In startup agencies, I guess no one has a choice but to roll with the punches. Also, I found out from our graphic designer that the site is going to be completely overhauled again before we release it. This means that the release date will be delayed even further.
In my spare time I go through my favorite websites and try to find out why I like a site as much as I do. There are millions of sites but somehow these half dozen pages capture my attention. So I focus on the user-friendliness, the ease to which it is organized, the content and the humor/draw that they have. The point of the site is to entertain or inform me in a digestable away that keeps me on the site. After all, a social media network has to draw you in and keep you there.
I'M ON A BOAT IN IBIZA!!!
24 June 2011
Friday afternoon, we got on the boat, The Catamaran, for basically a party on a boat. Looking at it from the front, it is deceptively small and the around the back is about 6 large mesh tarps that are suspended over the water, attached into the deck of the boat. The waters were such a clean deep blue and the waves rocked us and sprayed white foam. At one point I was sort of sick from the constant rocking and the free sangria and beer. After a late lunch, my stomach calmed down and I had swim in the Meditterranean. It is true what they say, it is one of the most beautiful and amazing waters in the world.
F*** Me I'm Famous
23 June 2011
We went out for drinks which is crazy expensive here. €15 a drink, luckily they had a two for one cocktail deal. Which is pretty normal but in Ibiza, coctail hour is around 11pm-1am.
David Guetta DJs one night a week at Pachá. He arrives at different times everytime so that people don't get used to a pattern. He's better live than in his actual music. At 3am, Guetta strolled in looking like he hadn't bathed in a week wearing a blue FLANNEL shirt. It was just brilliant except Katherine and I got to stand next to the VIP where they laughed and pointed at the people below. Also, go go dancers are just strange. They look good up there but I don't know if you could call it dancing, there seems to be a lot of posing in quick succession.
