…No response.
Steven never really handled people (other than Wallace) considering him their friend very well. Half the time it was shock—-not realizing he’d attained that title in someone else’s mind. But sometimes, a more insidious and self- depreciating thought would cross his mind.
You don’t want me as a friend. I never return calls.
But right now—-? Mostly just shock.
"Steven?"
{/One thing Viola wasn't cool with, was being ignored. She got a good bout of that from Alexia back in England, and she wasn't going to take it as an adult from some rock head.
Squatting down so she could poke his forehead and force him to look up at her, she spoke calmly. Calmly, but with an undertone that demanded a response form him.}
"What's buggin' ya?"
Barry’s dedication and determination had enough force to shatter any obstacle before him, and said obstacles were any trainers that stood in the way of him and his dreams! He yearned to taste the spices of life, to bathe in the pools of peace and to have the strength to truly acknowledge himself as a masterful trainer! His flame had been there from the start of his journey, and ever since dealing with Team Galactic, he had even more of a drive to become the best possible trainer in all of the regions!
”I’ll show you just how strong trainers from Sinnoh are, you hear!? I’ve been training for YEARS, so losing to you just won’t cut it! Not even in the slightest! No matter what, my Pokemon will zoom past their stride a super-speed and WOW both you and your Pokemon!”
Without any hesitation stapled to his body, the trainer from Sinnoh instantaneously began to dart after her. However, much to his surprise, he ended up passing her and ended up having to dig the tip of his right shoe into the ground to stop himself. Hopping backwards two paces, he made sure to jog slightly behind her with a face that was now paved in complete seriousness and pure determination!
{/Barry had to know that Viola was not going to make it easy on him in the slightest. Her bug pokémon were a force to be taken seriously. Already on the walk she was plotting how to take him down. He was bragging about Sinnoh, which she had to admit, had a ton of tough Pokémon. But Kalos Pokémon weren't to be trifled with either! And with Vivillion by her side, she would be fine. Everything would be okay.}
"Oh yeah? You're a pretty confident little kid! I gotta say, gotta admire someone with that kind of fire in your eyes! Now, if you really wanna wow me? Put your skills where your mouth is! You gotta beat my Pokémon down and around to wow me!"
{/He was an adorable little trainer. So full of zeal, a bit cocky, but not in a bad way. Hopefully he would prove he wasn't cocky by matching his skill to his big talk. But he had to follow behind her. As the adult, and a gym leader, she was the one to lead. Digging in one of her many pockets, and pulling out a key, she approached the gym and opened it without fault and without hesitation.}
"So....you ready to get exposed to the light of Kalos Gym Leader?"
”Viola…!” It comes out as half a groan, half false injured pride. “I knew your part in it! Camera’s a dead giveaway.” He gestured with a mimed click and a grin. “And that you didn’t write the actual stuff— well, actually, I wasn’t sure on that, bu I got it now. Give me some credit!” He frowned at her pointedly before breaking into another smile. “Heh! But I guess it’d work if I asked her myself…”
He waved back enthusiastically, clearly appreciative of the acknowledgement. Its place on her head did make it a little more endearing than what it might usually be, and Viola’s comment only added to it more so. “Is that what his location’s all about right now…? Oh, hey, thanks!”
Pulling out his own, he blinked from the contact name to Viola and back down to the phone. As he punched in the numbers, he cleared his throat, his eyebrows furrowing very seriously. “It looks like you dudes have some things to work out. It’s alright. Feuds happen.”
"Give ya some credit? Hmmm....that's a tough choice, Brawly. Frankly I don't think you deserve it. Just waltzing in here and throwing assumptions around! How rude!" {/She was joking, of course. His smiles as well as his positive upbeat were contagious in the most positive manner.
She continued holding out the phone for him to see, and Ninjask went back to it's resting position on the back of her head. But the sudden look of seriousness on his face, it confused her. Did he really think that she and her sister were fighting? A quick shake of her head to dispel any of those horrid thoughts, Viola gave a tiny chuckle at another wrong assumption of the hotheaded gym leader.}
"Nah...we're not fighting. We just pick on each other at times, you know. Like siblings do? We're grown women. We're not going to have petty fights over trivial things."
“…Wait, we’re friends—-? This is news to me.” Wasn’t she just threatening to kill him moments before?
"Yes. Do you have a problem?" {/Its just like with Grant. She enjoys his company, but the rock puns bring out her inner annoyance and violent tendencies.}
“—-I don’t think anything involving a painful and agonizing death is really a fitting present, no matter the occasion.”
"Nonsense! You deserve it to the fullest! I'm just being the good friend that I am. What kind of friend would I be if I didn't give you what you deserve?"
Barry immediately jumped back in shock, the simple word ‘gym’ pounding around in his noggin before a smirk caressed his face. He only came to Santalune in the first place to seek out the gym and challenge it with all of his might, and to his fortunate surprise, he was already making conversation with Santalune City’s gym leader herself!
Allowing both of his hands to become free, he molded them into fists before holding them up right above his chest. His spirit for becoming stronger was ignited, and because of that, he would gladly return to her gym in order to truly see just how tough Kalos truly was!
”YOUR gym, huh!? Good thing you showed up, since that was the place I was coming at full throttle! I don’t know what type you use or what Pokemon you have, but I am NOT gonna lose! Not until I become the next Tower Tycoon of the Sinnoh region!”
{/As if this boy couldn't get anymore excited than he was already. It was endearing, he reminded her of a younger her when she left the UK. Excited and wanting to do everything. Although hers were more for bug Pokémon and catching the essence of everything, but the sentiment was still there and still present in the form of a boy.}
"So you don't plan on losing? Good! Neither do I! So bring that attitude right on to my gym. I'll let my type be a huge surprise to you."
{/Tower Tycoon? He's adorable. Big dreams, big ambitions. He's on the right path to achieving everything he wants. A quick pivot on her heel and her hand thrown carelessly up in the air for him to follow, Viola began the quick trip to her gym.}
"C'mon there, Tycoon. I'll give you a run for your money!"
”Hah, schisty timing, right—-? What a shame, —-I gotta get my asteroid back to Mossdeep.”
"Oh! I get it! You wanna be killed in your hometown! How about this, I bury you in a rockslide? It'll amuse you, right? You get to die your life."
…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Steven."
The moment she called for him was the moment she acquired his attention, as shown by him rapidly turning his head towards hers before strapping his satchel on. Despite being a bit disgruntled with how fast she came to his blind-spot, he decided to humor her given that nobody else even noticed he was lost. Quickly strutting over towards her, he placed one hand in his pocket and allowed one palm to grip the strap of his bag.
“Yo, yo, yo! Need something or what!? If you don’t mind, you’ve gotta make it quick! I have this schedule I gotta follow and I can’t waste anymore time than I already have!”
{/How cute. He was a fiery spirit, and frankly Viola could only hope that the had himself Pokémon and wanted to challenge her gym. Maybe she should just casually mention it and see how he reacts to it? If anything, it should be one in her favor. Her arms falling over her petit torso, she gave a soft shake of her head. She didn't need anything. But she did want something.}
"You're a spunky little thing, I like that! And if you're lost, we can stop by my gym and I'll give you one of my maps. Just tell me what kind you need, and you can have it. Main streets, back streets, all routes...anything!"
—- “Rock collecting is a lot like paying taxes; you work so hard just to end up in a hole.”
".......Alright Steven. Give me your name, and date of birth. I already have the death date."
!?
He had nearly dropped his cigarette that was resting in between his fingers as soon as a blinding light of flash photography suddenly beamed towards his direction. Eyes instinctively followed the trail of the source, spotting a petite blonde woman whose hands were still equipped around the corners of her camera. Did she just take a picture of him? Still in shock and not wanting to act disrespectful (because he was too cool for that), Dojima threw his cigarette to the ground and straightened up the rolls of his sleeves seamlessly, as if nothing has happened before approaching. His usual on-the-job demeanor now overshadowing.
"May I help you?"
"--Oh!"
{/So he noticed, of course he did. Frankly it was kind of a shock to her. He looked so deep in thought that she figured he wouldn't even notice when she took the photographs of him. It was rude of her to take before asking, but if anything it was for her own personal collection. A tiny, sheepish laugh, and she lowered her camera from her face.}
"No no...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you, but I just..--You have such a great profile. And that natural look you have, 'hardcore office man taking a break!' Kind of look. And I just....need it for my personal studio. Do I have your permission to develop your photograph?"
“Oh damn, oh damn! Don’t tell me I’ve already lost my map of Kalos…! I spent like, thousands on that thing— and it was probably a rip-off, too!”
{/The sounds of shutters opening and closing could be heard at a nice distance. How lovely! A confused tourist. Usually, everyone who came here knew where they were going. Never before had she seen a look as pure and genuine as that. A moment after the shutter stopped, she looked up from behind her camera. This boy was unknowingly helping her, so she could willingly help him.}
"--Hey! Kid! C'mere fer a minute!"
—-A soft chuckle as he opened the door to the inside of the ice cream parlor; she definitely had quite a bit to talk about, but he didn’t mind. Steven would rather primarily listen in a conversation; that meant he wouldn’t turn a reasonable, normal discussion into a talk about his collection of rare stones and fossils. Or his passion for exploring caves.
Or anything else that’d most likely bore a young photographer.
Steven was well-acquainted with the reputation of other league champions, and Cynthia had to be one of the most terrifying… At least in his own rather biased opinion. She didn’t seem to have any particular set of favorites in her team—-except for companions that would unquestionably intimidate any challengers. That was a woman not to be trifled with; what little he knew of Diantha made her sound oddly similar to the Sinnoh native. They’d probably become friends, if they ever met. While he hadn’t ever considered challenging Cynthia himself, it’d be interesting to see the Pokemon of hers that this young gym leader sounded so interested in.
He’d heard of Spiritomb before. Apparently, they had something to do with rocks, but weren’t rock-type.
That’d be an interesting thing to investigate.
He nodded to acknowledge her insistence that he order first, then stepped up to the counter—speaking to the employee at the register, Steven placed his order. The tile floors—-in a typical checker board pattern—seemed to click with the imprint of his shoes.
”—-I'd like an orange creme milkshake, please—-no whipped cream.” He turned to the young lady beside him, and gestured towards her.
“…And whatever she’d like to order.”
{/She had to be a good conversationalist. It was part of the whole photography deal. To get what she wanted, she would have to talk circles around people, word smith things to get in places and everything. While her profession required multitudes of silent periods, they also required for her to have excellent speaking skills.
But her listening was just as good as her speaking skills. Rock talk never bothered her in the slightest actually. Being friends with Grant, his talks of walls and rocks were annoying at first. But at the same time she did the exact same thing when it came to her bugs. Especially those who went into a cocoon and then came out completely new and different. How much they could change, even so as growing wings and taking flight!
Just as she was sure he couldn't fully grasp the concept of her bugs, she was sure she couldn't fully grasp the concept of his rocks. Or why...something so sedentary was so fascinating. Maybe the evolution stones and the different kind of stones that can be held were cool. But that's all they were. Stones to help Pokémon, and look pretty to humans.}
"....?"
{/Her attention snapping back to Steven, and the fact he was buying her kindness with a milkshake, she smiled rather apologetic to him and the cashier for making them wait, before ordering.}
"Aha...I'll take a Oreo Milkshake please."
A bundle of bright yellows and greens which were all tied up with a satin ribbon sat on the renowned professional photographer's desk. There was a note attached and it read as-- "Maybe you'll be lucky enough to spot a Sycamore lace bug."
"Ohh--!"
{/A bouquet of flowers on her desk, and a note of a new bug! How great! The flowers were lovely, and the thought of her finding a new bug, was just as lovely as the flowers. And much to her surprise, it wasn't Grant. It was actually Dojima! One of the Trainers let him in so he could give her those. How thoughtful!}
"I'll have to thank him later for these--maybe I'll show up at his daughter's events, and photograph them for free."

"Excuse me. Have you seen the Famous Photographer of Kalos?"
"I don't....think there is a famous photographer of Kalos. I mean there are a bunch of 'em who go around, myself included. If you want though, you can check in Lumiose City and ask around. There are tons of bigshots there who get their name plastered on everything."
