The truth? It’s hardly ever as complicated as we think. We just hope it is, because then we feel smarter if we can work it out in advance.

Since death is certain, but the time of death is uncertain, what is the most important thing?
Pema Chodron
“I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery—air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, "This is what it is to be happy.” ― Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
“I thought of the things that had happened to me over the years, and of how little I had made happen.” ― Julian Barnes, The Sense of an Ending
This kind of detail impressed me. It suggested a whole life of marvellous, elaborate decadence that attracted me like a magnet.
I certainly believe we all suffer damage, one way or another. How could we not, except in a world of perfect parents, siblings, neighbours, companions? And then there is the question on which so much depends, of how we react to the damage: whether we admit it or repress it, and how this affects our dealings with others. Some admit the damage, and try to mitigate it; some spend their lives trying to help others who are damaged; and there are those whose main concern is to avoid further damage to themselves, at whatever cost. And those are the ones who are ruthless, and the ones to be careful of.
The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes
What you end up remembering isn't always the same as what you have witnessed.
The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes
-It was my first big chance, but here I was, sitting back and letting it run through my fingers like so much water.
The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
And I look up at the window and think, I no longer know where you are, and I walk on and wonder where the living goes when it stops.
layover, Charles Bukowski
You don’t remember what happened. What you remember becomes what happened.
John Green / An Abundance of Katherines (via bnmxfld)
You have to stop searching for why
At some point you have to leave it alone
I am old when it is fashionable to be young; I cry when it is fashionable to laugh. I hated you when it would have taken less courage to love.
as the sparrow, Charles Bukowski
The moon shines through the glass doors and the life left in me gently surfaces. I have survived them one more time.
the crowd, Charles Bukowski
You know the worst part? I knew this was gonna happen and I let myself get excited anyway.
BoJack Horseman
I worried about not remembering. Not remembering of all the moments. All of the places.
