Hilarie Burton, Sophia Bush, and Bethany Joy Lenz share more about their experiences on "One Tree Hill,", especially in Season 4's "Maxim" storyline. During Monday's episode of his "Drama Queens" podcast, he reenacted the season's fourth episode, during which Brooke (Bush) photographed Rachel (Danielle Ackles) for Maxim magazine.
The episode of One Tree Hill aired in October 2006, a month before Bush, Burton, and Ackles appeared on their own cover of Maxim magazine - but they didn't really want to. At the time, he explained, the show was trying to attract a more male audience by bringing in an outrageous man ("Psycho Derek," played by Matt Barr) wearing women's underwear.
Sophia Bush said. "They were like, 'Maybe we should do more! Maybe we should max out the girls and tell them that if they don't fire, they are fired.'
I don't. I let Brooke do this. Was trying to wrestle it down to the point. That's what you tried to force me to do. I don't want to do it. I literally said, 'If you show this cover to your co-stars' If we don't shoot together, we guarantee you will never be released for a press day, movie, event, or your charity, we will keep you here forever.'
Burton later recalled being brought into the production office when producer Mark Schon told her, "Look how everybody else is on the cover of every single magazine and nobody wants you. Nobody wants you and in the end, You have someone who wants you and you're really into it. Turn your nose up?
Sophia bush, then noted that he felt he had no choice but not to distribute the magazine.
"At that point, I said, 'No, I don't want to do it,' and I was told I had to," he said. "It was a deep danger and a danger to be able - honestly, even have the ability to escape for the weekend, a place where at this stage, this season, I've given up opportunities that I had. It was a security threat."
Additionally, the woman claimed that Shawn came on the set of a Maxim shoot and gave her an iPod that he thought was full of music - he played the trick in front of Ackles and Bush.
As the women spoke earlier, they then elaborated on how they are constantly at loggerheads against each other. During the podcast, Lenz revealed that he was told that his co-star was shooting Maxim and "replaced" him with Ackles.
Barton and Sophia Bush, shocked by Lenz's statement, then shared that they had been told that Lenz had been asked and denied doing so.
Lenz explained that this was the beginning of being viewed differently by his bosses. In one episode, Ackles' character, Rachel, calls Lang's character Haley "a little fat girl".
It must be what he thinks of me. I didn't see.' Now all of a sudden, every time I look in the mirror, I think, 'Am I fat? I think I have a little head. Is that bad? Is that abnormal?' It's so dumb, but it really stuck in my mind for a long time. From that point on, I was treated like, 'Put Joey into the middle-aged mom category. We all talk sexy with going to do. There's nothing attractive about Joey anymore because he's married and apparently, they thought I was fat and boring. That was all. I was replaced with Danielle - who I love. It was so weird."
Five years after "One Tree Hill" wrapped, 18 women who worked on the show (including the four actors mentioned above) came forward in a letter to Variety, accusing the showrunner of sexual assault. Schwan never responded to the allegations.
