iFixit
iFixit is a wiki-based site that teaches people how to fix almost anything. It was started in 2003 by Luke and Kyle, in a dorm room at California Polytechnic University when they tried to fix an old iBook together. With no instructions, they tinkered, fiddled, broke some tabs and lost some screws. But they fixed it. When they decided to start selling spare parts themselves, iFixit was born. It now hinges around its step-by-step repair guides, which are free to download and use under Creative Commons licenses.
Now, anyone can create a repair manual for a device on iFixit and anyone can edit the existing set of manuals to improve them. The siteâs founders say that thousands of people make use of the guides every day.
âWeâve heard repair success stories from forensic detectives, field translators, and even kids,â say the pair. âFrom New York to Alaska, Tibet to the Faroe Islands, people have used our guides to fix their stuff.
âOur philosophy is that if you canât open it, you donât own it. Once you disassemble, repair, and put back together your laptop or iPod, you have a much better understanding of what goes into it. Itâs astounding how just 20 minutes of work can make an iPod good as new â but most people have no idea that there are instructions available to make the work easy. And why should they? Apple tells everyone that the battery isnât user-serviceable.

Rather, contributors to this page concentrate on basic and widely applicable principles, for example soldering and how to stay safe while fixing things.

"My socials don't have my real name!" What about the email to register that social? What about your wifi provider? They provide the IP address from which you're frequently logging in. Don't they have your information?
Your cell carrier will comply with a subpoena.
You ISP will comply with a subpoena.
So will Google, Apple, Yahoo, Meta, Tumblr, Twitter, you name it. None of them will fight the government on behalf of a random person they don't care about.
This is why fighting for online privacy laws, real actual privacy laws, is so important. It's why using services with end-to-end encryption is so important. It's why if you don't want any chance of law enforcement to know about something, you cannot post about it online in any way.
The messages we recieved growing up about being very careful about what you post online wasn't fear mongering. They just picked a different villain.
"Don't just throw ripped jeans away, you can repair them using these 10 cute Visible Mending techniques!!" unfortunately my friend the first point of failure for every single pair of jeans i have owned in my life has been the Crotch and Ass. Knees: fine, cuffs: fine; but 3 years in, and all that stands between the world and my astronaut-patterned taint is 0.5Âľm of denim worn so thin that every squat threatens to tear it to shreds like wet toilet paper. If the Tiktok craft community could figure out a way to resurrect jeans afflicted in such a way that doesn't involve adding a whole ass buttpatch like some sort of inverse assless chaps situation then that'd be great
May I recommend the sashiko family of techniques? Iâm not sure if youâve seen this particular method but itâs one that is likely thousands of years old and is especially good for areas like the inseam or the knees that generally get more wear than other regions:
Many of the visible mending hacks one sees are designed to be aesthetic and not structural, as OP points out, but this technique is different:
1) youâll notice that the mended area is larger than the actual damage. All of the stitched area indicates where additional fabric is added for strength.
2) the pattern of visible stitching is PRACTICAL in this work. The reason pants wear down along the inseam is that the fabric is constantly being rubbed against the other leg. Here, the stitching is whatâs rubbing against itself, and the embroidery will fail first, meaning the fabric underneath will last longer.
3) this technique is very, very simple once you draw your grid, and there are plenty of places online that sell water soluble graph paper that you can sew into as a guide and then wash out.
Please please please donât give up on home sewing and mending because of content farms - I promise thereâs a whole world of incredibly simple and reliable techniques that - while perhaps time consuming - are PROVEN to increase the longevity of your clothes AND give you further opportunities to express your creativity and style!!!
