The tags nobody pays attention to.
So I'm sure everybody in the fandom has seen a hundred posts praising the saferoom graffiti. The funny scribbles and notes on the walls of saferooms. But I've never seen anybody talk about the graffiti outside of the saferoom. Because, in my opinion, it's all just as interesting.
Here are my findings, with a ton of graffiti recreated in high res at the end!
Starting off strong with "MORBID" at the beginning of No Mercy. It's very edgy, and sets the precedent for the rest of the edgy graffiti in this game. 'Morbid' is a perfect word for it, actually. I also enjoy that the M is a skull. Remember this unique little quirk! It'll come back later.
Also at the start of No Mercy is "HOPE", with part of it seemingly powerwashed out so it says "NO HOPE". I think that's great. Somebody was so wrapped up in their angst they decided to deface this graffiti for the hell of it. Environmental storytelling.
In the nearby alleyway is "FLIP", and I adore this graffiti. I love the colours. I love the bomb dot i. It's just great.
Right beside FLIP is this tag that says "VIRUS ONE". I thought this was interesting. The virus part is pretty obviously referencing the green flu virus. But why one? Maybe because this is a L4D1 map? No idea amigo.
Scooting down the alleyway we see a large collection of tags. We get another "VIRUS", as well as one of my all-time favorite tags, "JUICY ❤︎"
Behind all this garbage I found "STINGER". This was probably an artist's street alias if I had to guess. Hell yeah.
This one says "TUFF". It made me giggle. Don't know why!
Heading down into the subway station, we find another "VIRUS"! This one's beautiful. I love the curvy letters, I love the crown above the i.
This one's fun. It says "CHOP" with an even smaller "chop" in the corner. I don't see transcripts in graffiti very often. For those that don't know; this is a throwie, short for a throw-up. A design that you can quickly throw up onto the wall and run. Throws are often written in big curvy letters that can be difficult to read. A lot of the illegibility is intentional, as a lot of graffiti artists value intricate artistic style over readability. And artists don't typically write little transcripts for their graffiti. At least, I've never seen it. I have two guesses as to why it's written this way in-game; Either the developers wanted to ensure the players could read the graffiti, or there's an unseen in-game graffiti artist NPC that values accessibility.
All of this is only speculation, and needless speculation at that. Given that this "CHOP" is one of the most legible and easy-to-read throws I've ever seen.
Oh hey! There's "VIRUS" again! This seems to be the same "VIRUS" as the first one we saw, but in white. Cool!
Here's another collection of tags I thought was neat. A lot of really cool ones in here. "THC", "DOX", "DIES", "HELLKAT", and "VIRUS ONE" again! Except this 'virus one' is drawn in a different style than the first one we saw. We'll add that to the list of unique "VIRUS"'s we've come across.
I'm curious what Hellkat means. I looked it up, and apparently "hellcat" was just another word to describe an evil witch of a woman back in the day. Which is interesting! This was probably added as a subtle nod to the L4D witch!
Add two more virus tags to the list! I like the vertical one! That one's special!
This one says "VZ"! Probably a reference to the versus gamemode. Cool!
Another virus sighting! This one's also special, because it says "VIRUZ" with a Z.
This one caught my eye. This tag says "ANNIE", which is the first real name we've come across. Not a pseudonym or an alias. An actual person's name. I didn't think too much of it until I continued onwards, and I saw THIS--
It's Annie! But in a different style! At this point I was convinced this Annie person was a developer sneaking her name in, so I looked her up. This Annie is most likely Valve's Andrea Wicklund, who worked for the company as an artist from 2006-2016. She seems to be working on a solo art career now. Good for her!
Nearby we see a "SAVAGE" throw and a tag that says "TELECON".
Not sure why the heck Telecon is mentioned in the graffiti. I looked it up and all I got was a Canadian telecommunications company. And as far as I know, they & Valve have no business partnerships. The savage throw is really cool though!
I enjoy this one, it says "ROT!"
There are so many references to death/zombies in the graffiti. It's really cool attention to detail that's often overlooked!
Another virus!! This is a more heavily stylized throw than the others. I like it!
Oh hey, remember that very first graffiti we looked at? The one that said "MORBID", with a skull for the M? Well here we have "MORT" with a skull for the M. Maybe it's a stretch, but I like to think that this tag was made by the same person who made "MORBID". Maybe their name was Mort! Shoutout to Mort and their Morbid sense of style.
I'm quickly reaching the image limit for this post, so I'll leave it at this. Remember; this was only graffiti I found in No Mercy. This was all one campaign! And it wasn't even ALL the graffiti in that campaign. I glossed over a lot of it! So I highly encourage you to play No Mercy for yourself and take a look at all the awesome graffiti. That campaign definitely has the highest concentration of artwork on the walls. Especially in the subway tunnels. I saw a mural of a giant octopus in there.
I leave you with all the graffiti tags I've recreated from the walls of this game. Haven't found the time to recreate the more complicated designs yet, but I'll probably get to it eventually.
Thanks for joining me on this fun little tour of the No Mercy graffiti.
