This city could be difficult to navigate. Given all the destroyed buildings and debris, a lot had just blended in with each other. Constant eclipses didn’t exactly help matters. At least even in darkness the Warden could see where he was going. The Deep Roads had improved his sight if nothing else.

Twelve different construction points had been announced. Daylen wasn’t picky about which one he helped. The mage hadn’t been here enough to develop an affection for certain areas. Not like the past city, where he sought to protect sector four whenever he could.

“It does feel like something is off about them. Some of my conversations have felt rather unnatural. In the past I’d hoped at least to gain some information. That pamphlet had left me with more questions than answers.

Of course they’re still people after all. They’ll understand the need for survival, and likely follow us if we explain the situation. We’ll all be going through this for a few days. If anything they outnumber us by a fair amount.”

By ‘us’ he means people who were pulled here. Whether from the previous experiment or whatever world they came from. A lot of the residents in comparison just seemed to naturally live here. Even during all the destruction, they’d worked to repair and build back their home.

Daylen had been about to introduce himself when more creatures spawned in the distance. Winter’s Breath is held out, the cold stave aimed right at their new opponents.

“Unlike some people here I already had all of my spells. The only issue is them vanishing from time to time. So I don’t mind taking care of these before we leave. Once we’re done, I can actually introduce myself.”

When this man mentioned a pamphlet and information, he felt like he was completely missing something here. What was he talking about?

“Hopefully they get the message, standing out here like sitting ducks isn’t exactly doing them any favors.“

“Right, lets just skip the formalities then and just agree to kick some ass.“

Gladio said as he’d crack his neck to the side, holding his greatsword out ahead of him as more of these shadow-like monsters were appearing from cracks in the ground and narrow alleyways.

Judging from what he saw with how this stranger fought, this guy was clearly skilled in using elemental magic. Or at least he hoped so anyways, the last thing Gladio wanted was to be accidentally blasted by some lightning or caught up in some fiery explosion.

Just to be on the safe side, maybe it was for the best of Gladio took a more defensive style for the time being.

▲ Zelda’s eye twitched ever-so-slightly as a man appeared in a showy manner that she could only assume was meant to send the message ‘I’m here to save you’. To be completely fair he’d killed a monster she hadn’t even noticed sneaking up on her in an unprotected zone, and even with her bow of light she wasn’t a proficient enough archer to have confidently taken it down, but the whole thing was kind of… annoying.

“I didn’t ask you to do that you know. I can take care of myself.” As much as she’d learned to accept Link’s help, being looked down upon by a stranger would never sit well with her.

It was a good thing he saw that creature sneaking around when he did, a few moments too late and that woman could’ve easily been injured. As his great sword disappears in a blue aura from his hand, he was just about to ask if this woman was alright, expecting a brief exchange and then going on their separate ways.

However, that comment from this woman stopped him in his tracks, Gladio turning towards the stranger with an eyebrow raised.

“When did I say that you couldn’t?” 

“That creature was sneaking up from behind and you looked distracted, so I stepped in.”

While gratitude was nice and all, he didn’t expect to constantly receive it for every single choice he made. That feeling of pride and honor for following his duty as a Crownsguard and keeping others safe is more than enough for him.

“Did you just want me to sit back and watch?“

Conversing with some of the citizens had been difficult. It’s not that they couldn’t respond. Rather, every response he received felt unnatural. Like they were trying to recite memorised lines. Of course Daylen would still do his best to protect them. It’d been thought otherwise in the old city, but these people deserved help like anyone else. Their lives do and still matter.

For now the mages’ aim was clear. Help get those who couldn’t defend themselves to safety, and face off against whatever monsters he found. With his luck it didn’t take much time to find any. Vincent had wanted to help others on his own. So although reluctantly, the Warden is by himself for now.

It was unpredictable to know just when his spells would vanish. Thankfully, this effect of the virus didn’t make him Tranquil. But it was something of a ticking time bomb. At least Winter’s Breath didn’t also disappear. When in doubt, club something over the head until it dies.

He’d been casting spells from a distance when a tall man joined the fray, managing to kill several of the monsters. It’d definitely been some impressive swordplay. Daylen didn’t really feel that he needed to be saved. Still, he had no issue in cooperating with the other man.

“We should probably head to wherever the nearest construction point is. There might be some people who need help getting to another one. Might I ask for your name before we get going?”

Gladio gives this man another nod upon hearing his plan, having some help in rounding up the citizens around here to safer areas is definitely going to be easier with another set of hands.

“Got it, I’ve been trying to reason with some folk nearby but it’s not getting me anywhere. There some sort of culture or language barrier here I’m missing or what?”

As odd as these groups of people were, a person was a person and he wouldn’t be able to live it down if he left innocents to fend for themselves in a situation like this. While he was still concerned on the current location of his king, he was well aware that Noctis was more than capable of defending himself in combat. 

"Gladiolus Amicitia, but my friends call me Gladio.”

“And you?”

The window of time for introductions seemed to be passing as more monsters in the distance seemed to spawn out of thin air. Were these creatures related to daemons? Impossible, considering it was the middle of the day.

“Unless you’re up for another fight, we’d better work fast.”

Upbeat electronic music? Annoying lyrics that don’t leave your head? This music choice has Prompto written all over it. At least this piece of music wasn’t part of some forced sing-a-long back in the Regalia.
