An Elucien au where Feyre takes Elain into the woods during spring and summer, so she can see all the trees and plants blooming. They end up unintentionally finding a hole in the wall and while Elain looks over into the Spring Court, she locks eyes with Lucien on the other side and Lucien feels the bond snap into place.
Lucien, shocked that this human woman in the woods is somehow his mate, assures her that he is not a threat, bows politely and asks for her name after introducing himself.
Elain is terrified to have somehow found a fae in the woods but for some reason, she can't bring herself to run. She can't even bring herself to scream. All she can do is just stare into the strange eyes.
Then he speaks and his words calm the nervousness twisting her stomach.
Elain matches his polite manners and drops into an elegant curtsy but before she can reveal her name, Feyre's voice beckons to her.
Elain rushes towards her sister's voice, not wanting to know what would happen if Feyre, armed with her bow and arrows, came face to face with a fae but as she hurries away, she can't stop herself from look back behind her shoulder.
Lucien is rooted to the spot where he stands, barely breathing as he watches the human woman, his mate, disappear into the trees.
Elain returns to the hovel, unable to think of anything but Lucien, laying wide awake in between her sleeping sisters, she is restless. She feels like she's being drawn back the forest, back to Lucien, and she doesn't know why but she's certain that won't have a moment of peace until she sees him again.
Meanwhile, Lucien is pacing a trench into the manor grounds, his mind swirling with images of soft curls and fawn brown eyes.
Mate, mate, mate, mate... the mantra is relentless in his mind, the bond flaring up inside him, urging him to cross the wall and find her in the human lands.
Elain rises before anyone else the next morning and dresses quickly before gathering her flower basket and heading out the door.
The walk to the edge of the woods is well known to Elain. It had been many months since she started walking along the tree lines and foraging what she could find, but she had never gone more than one or two steps further, at least, not without Feyre, but Elain knows that that is no longer an option anymore. She needs to go much further and she needs to go alone. So, taking a deep breath, Elain whispers the name, "Lucien" before stepping and vanishing into the thick trees.
Lucien bolts upright in bed, instantly brought out of his fitful sleep with his heart pounding. He can feel her. She's coming. His mate.
Lucien dresses quickly, but with immense care and takes off for the hole in the wall just as the sun begins to rise.
The late morning sunlight is streaming through the trees when Elain finds the place she's looking for. A small part of her mind questions the swiftness and confidence with which she moved through the unfamiliar woods but her heart shuts down the thought. She knows exactly where to go, what path to take, so long as it leads to him.
With bated breath, Elain approaches the wall and her heart begins pounding furiously as she catches a flash of red.
For a moment, neither one of the speaks. Elain simply breathes deeply while Lucien doesn't breathe at all. Both of them devouring the other with their eyes. Then, Elain breaks the silence.
Lucien's fist clench at his sides and his eyes close while he fights the shudder of pleasure that ripples through his body at the sound of his name from her lips.
Elain introduces herself and Lucien repeats her name, pronouncing it slowly, as if he's savoring the feel of it on his tongue and then Elain is looking away shyly, blushing at the thought of his tongue.
They slowly begin talking, spending hours at a time together. In the beginning, there are days when Elain doesn't even remember to fill her basket with anything and simply returns home to her very confused family.
Eventually, Lucien hears the full story of the Archeron's descent into poverty, and after that day, Elain always returns home with a basket full of fresh, seasonal vegetables direct from Spring.
Lucien begs to help her more but Elain refuses, it's hard enough convincing her family she foraged and traded everything he gives her. More would lead to them discovering the truth and Elain isn't certain where that would then lead, but she's too scared to find out.
When winter fully sets in, Elain can't come to the wall anymore and Lucien feels like he's going insane. Is she warm enough? Is she eating enough? Is she ill?
Every time he waits in vain for her at the hole, he fights with the desire to march through it and find her but he manages to stop himself every time he straddles the border, knowing that a high fae entering the human lands would not go well for either of them.
Lucien slowly begins to consider another way of checking on his Lady. He had tentatively begun to explain the mating bond to her, so he hoped it wouldn't be a complete shock. Slowly, cautiously, Lucien reaches deep within himself, taking hold of the bond connecting him and Elain and gently tugs.
Elain drops the bowl of stew she is holding, it's contents spilling onto the table with a wet smack and she looks up to see every member of her family is blatantly staring at her.
Mumbling a half hearted excuse, Elain hurries to the privacy of the bedroom and seeks sanctuary hidden under the covers where she pretends to be asleep when her sisters climb in beside her.
In the dead of night, Elain sneaks out of the bed, pulls on her boots, wraps herself in a threadbare cloak and slips out the door, immediately taking off at a run through the light dusting of snow.
Lucien watches her approach, illuminated by the full moon, he can see her face is pink from the bitter cold, her breath coming in fast, hard little puffs as she struggles to breath in the frosty air. He doesn't think, he simply acts, allowing his mating instincts to take over. He steps through the hole in the wall and for the first time, sets foot on human land.
Elain watches Lucien enter her world with no hesitation and she wonders if he even realizes he did it but before she can ask, he strides towards her and his large, warm hands tenderly cradle her face, soothing away the numbness.
She asks while quickly looking him over and feeling relieved when she doesn't see any signs of injury.
Lucien nods silently once, not taking his eyes off hers as he slowly feels her cheeks being to warm again.
He asks while moving his hands down to rub along her arms.
Slowly, Elain nods, suddenly very conscious of the fact that Lucien is touching her for the first time. A different kind of warmth colors Elain's cheeks before she speaks, almost in a whisper.
"I felt you. It was strange, like you pulled on a rib."
"Yes. Forgive me. I've gotten so used to seeing you every day that the winter has caused me to be overwhelmed with worry."
Elain smiles then raises her hand to caress Lucien's cheek, just he had done with her, and savors the heat of his sun kissed skin beneath her cold fingertips.
Lucien stops breathing as he feels her touch him for the first time. Carefully, he turns his head, his warm lips brushing against her cold fingertips and he tenderly kisses sensation back into them.
"I have had my fill of winter storms and separation. I am ready for spring."
Elain speaks clearly, with a certainty that brings a dazzling smile to Lucien's face as he realizes exactly what she is asking for. He looks at her questioningly for a moment, seeking permission, which she grants with an eager smile and a nod.
So, Lucien effortlessly scoops his mate up into his arms and carries her across the wall, into his world of everlasting spring.
