There's just something that irks me when people say they want 'complex' characters but when the characters actually IS complex, all of a sudden we have a problem?
This only sparked because I was reading this fanfic. The female lead is named Camille, and she grew up in an EXTREMELY racist household in 1962-1984. (It takes place in 1984) her whole family is white and says the n-word all the time throughout the fanfic. She later meets this guy, and since he's a different skin color, she is immediately torn. Camille really likes this guy but from years of familial trauma, she pushes him away. In the fic, her inner thoughts were always commented on his skin tone and how he was 'different' and it's 'wrong' and the comments just genuinely pissed me off.
The comments were mostly just bashing the author's writing, which in the very first chapter (which was the author's note) explained the complexity of the story, and the themes that came along with it. (Such as racism and homophobia.) And like I said the people were just being so absolutely rude. "Girl bye." "This is genuinely pissing me off author." "BITCH?", and so on.
It just makes me so mad because Camille is written so well, the author did an excellent job on this character and all the comments just being rude ruined the fic for me tonight. I'm about 13 chapters into the fic, and I can already see development. Shes figuring out she doesn't have to go by her family's rules, she's made plenty of friends of a different color without being uncomfortable, and not to mention she's getting really close with the guy she likes in the story.
Anywho I hope I explained enough I'm tired I'm taking my irritated to bed
