Have you ever thought about mankind cradling a flame? The gentleness with which they cup their palms to protect it. Possess and preserve it.

Dazai watches Chuuya - cold gravity - as red patterns erupt across fragile skin.

And Dazai is struck, useless.

Possessed and protected, preserved for one single moment. By him. The violence with which he decimates. Dazai's hand against the skyline, closes around the image, a need to cherish that moment.

It flickers.

Chuuya falls.

Dazai cradles him, tracing his face with gentle fingers, cupping a palm to his cheek.

'Chuuya—'

Then he draws on his forehead. Leaves him.

'This is all your fault,' Chuuya poked his chest, unforgiving.

Dazai gasped, 'Brute.'

'I hate you more than I have ever before.'

'Not more than I hate chibis.'

'Shut up,' Chuuya's eyes were wet with betrayal, which wasn't fair - Dazai hadn't betrayed him in years. 'You don't get to say that right now.'

'But it's true. Chuuya's the only thing I care enough abou—'

'—SHUT! up. Just.'

Dazai coughed. 'Chuuya should shut up.'

'Both of you' - Mori looked uncharacteristically stressed - 'Shut up.'

Gauze oozed red. Painless.

'I need silence.'

All in all; it was a nice final memory, Dazai thought.

Summary:

Now that they were so close, the boy smelt like dirt, and fur, but also oddly sweet. If the situation were any different Dazai wouldn’t blame himself for chasing the scent, teeth bared like an animal. Like a beast. Despite the power behind the surge, the biting, gnawing, primal feeling that caged him in and detached him all at once, the feeling rendered him completely powerless. Captive long enough to forget everything he knew. To forget to breathe.

He felt his whole expression slacken bar a small smile, inhibitions deadened to everything else.

“You’re beautiful.”
