a confused look painted clearly on the face of alex reid when the other appeared by her side. shahir had told alex’s small family ( well charlie and luke ) that memory loss after being comatose , the trauma , was a possibility. and more than likely would be TEMPORARY. but in the moment , it was all too real. ‘ who are you again ?? ’ /
luke had gotten the call right when the bus was pulling into the stop, but by the time it pulled out, he was two blocks away, feet carrying him as fast as he could get them to move. and that moment he reached the operating room ( not that he was allowed in-- what was he? just some reckless medic, right? ) his world spun out from under him. and that’s how time kept moving, in weird spirals that felt an awful lot like the falling end of a bender. he needed a drink, just a little one, to keep the world from completely disappearing out from under him. but then he’d look at alex, in the ER, then in the ICU, and he knew he couldn’t do that to her.
much to charlie’s chagrin, not that chuckles ever mentioned it, luke stubbornly refused to leave his sister’s side, mumbling under his breath anything he could think of-- prayers he’d heard at st. catherine’s, old memories from an easier time, sometimes just reverting to pleas. you’re all i got, alex. please don’t leave me.
now he sat by her side, a relief better than any high he’d had in his life washing over him the second she opened her eyes. “ hey, girlie. ” it had been the first words out of his mouth, hand moving to hold hers when his sister’s words hit him. he froze, relief quickly turning to panic. he tried to find some sign in her eyes that it was a joke ( har har, sis. very funny. ) but this wasn’t her style. his, maybe. but not hers. “ you, uh-- you really don’t know? ” he quickly moved his hands back, eyes dropped to the space between her bed and his lap. “ yeah well that’s probably for the best, right? ” it was more of a whisper to himself than to her and after a moment, he shook his head and looked back up-- though this time he couldn’t quite meet her eyes. “ i’m, uh, really glad you’re awake, alex. ”
