You can’t see me anymore, Luffy. It’s been years since we last spoke, years since we last clasped hands. In that time you’ve grown so strong. I’m proud. I’m so damn proud of you, as your brother and fellow pirate. No matter what happens, I want you to know that. You’re the best little brother I could’ve asked for.
uwaa-- first time I post a fic up ever-- so I’m kinda embarrassed... but yeah this is angst about Luffy remembering Ace on his birthday.
a.k.a. where I just wanted a Luffy that still mourns for his brother; can be taken in as brotherly/more-than-brotherly context.
“I know you’ll fulfill it, your dream, you’re my little brother after all!”
Ace…
It was New Years, his oldest brother’s birthday...It’s that one time where Luffy would disappear to be alone, without explanation. The crew noticed this but when they last asked he simply said he wanted to think...and a Luffy thinking out of all things is nothing short of worrying. But he’s their captain, so they let him be.
Luffy may act like a fool, but there are some things he knows inherently--that this is one thing that he shouldn’t show his crew. As much as he dislikes being alone, this particular time of the year is hard for him. It’s the day of his beloved brother’s birthday...the one he had failed to save. Hence, this is the time of the year he lets himself be alone, and let himself break down and tear down his mask and just...cry.
He used to look forward to this time of the year, to party with everyone at the start of the New Year, to celebrate a conclusion of a year and birth of a new one--along with his brother, back when they were younger. He remembers how his brother used to hate his birthday but after years of persistence his brother started to enjoy it with him, if only for his little brother’s smile.
“A-Ace…” his body wracks uncontrollably as his shaking terribly, curling himself to hug his knees and hide his face against his knees. He’s not remembering the time of when he had lost Ace...but the good 7 years that he had spent with his brother. After nearly dying to that attack from the bear, he noticed Ace gradually changed...and from there everything was all better. He remembers the petty fights over something silly, the hugs as they make up, the warmth as they cuddle together in bed at night, the gentleness as his wounds were tended to, that smile that was directed at him which is just endearing, those calloused hands that would fondly ruffle his hair, the arms what would hold him up when he asks for a piggyback ride, that broad back that he always chases after, that deep voice that is magical in soothing his fears away...everything that is Ace--Luffy misses it terribly. His heart sinks and breaks at the undisputed fact that he won’t get any of this anymore...because Ace was gone.
“Listen up Luffy! We’ll live our lives without regrets!”
‘I’m sorry Ace...no matter what, I regret not being able to save you...I miss you so much…’ Luffy mentally apologizes, imagining if Ace was here he would’ve already whacked him in the head-- and just the absence of that particular abuse just makes the captain bite his lip as he desperately hold back from crying just like that time after he saw his brother's fall.
"Ace..Ace..Aceaceace...ACEEEE!" Luffy cries in anguish-- hitting his head on the ground as another year's worth of bottled up tears, that was hiding behind his smile, comes rushing out like a broken dam.
While from far away, cheers of "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" could be heard.
Since I ran out of acelu/ASL brothers arts and fanfics to fave-- decided to start a blog start posting some of my own (tho just more of my doodles since I’m a horrible writer) too much feels for these bross
