I suspected, when TLOAS tracklist was initially released, that “Father Figure” was a callback to George Michael’s song “Father Figure” — a song that he wrote when he was still in the closet but wanted to express his sexuality in deeper and more meaningful ways than the saccharine pop songs of early WHAM, so he wrote this song about a forbidden (gay) love.

Now that the TLOAS track list has been released with the songwriting credits, and “Father Figure” credits George Michael, indicating his song was sampled, I am confident that TLOAS will, in some ways, pulling back the curtain on Taylor’s showgirl stage persona to reveal her true queer self that she had alluded to for many years.
