I’ve gotten quite a few questions about how I did the moss and vines on Onua, so I guess it’s about time I did a tutorial on it.
These are our main materials for today:
Milliput and Tamiya putty for sculpting the vines, sandpaper and my trusty poking stick for getting the finer details in the vines and smoothing them out, and of course brushes for painting. But more importantly we have:
Elmer’s glue and some fine sand! This stuff is to create the texture for the moss.
First we sculpt the vines on by making some putty snakes and laying them out in small branching patterns. Generally for something as small as a mask I don’t go too crazy on the branches, but depending on how big you want your vines to be you could go crazy. Remember though, the more branching you want on your vines, the smaller you’re going to have to sculpt them. After the initial vines are all dry, go back over with some sandpaper and a little more putty to smooth out all the seams. I use liquid putty to do this, but it can be done with the same putty you used to make the bulk of the vines, it just takes longer due to the drying time.
After you’re done putting the vines on, you can move on the the moss. Apply some glue to your mask, creating larger splotches surrounded by smaller ones to emulate patches of moss. I use Elmer’s glue because it’s cheap and dries pretty slowly, allowing it to be spread around a fair amount, or wiped off if I make a mistake. After you apply each patch of glue, pour some sand over the mask, making sure all the glue is covered in sand, and gently shake excess sand off the mask. Make sure to use a tray to keep things clean and so you can recover excess sand to use later.
For the moss we have three steps, an initial green base coat, a darker green wash to start to define the crevices of the moss, and a lighter green drybrushed onto the top to really make the moss pop. You can do the same thing with different colors as well to get different colors of moss, just keep to the middle base coat, dark wash, light drybrush formula.
As for the vines, those are just plain old brown.
