CONTXT. akaashi knows that he is no longer someone who is perfect for you. he can no longer provide for you, as you once hoped for. yet, a part of him finds it hard to come to terms with his decision.
CW. probably ooc, timeskip!au (manga editor akaashi), angst, wc: 1.7k
Akaashi Keiji knows he isn't the perfect partner for you. He has been feeling it repeatedly for a while now. It's only gotten stronger each timeāthe more time went on, the more stronger the realisation became.
If he was the cloudy sky that foretold incoming heavy rain, you were the ray of sunshine. You were a rare occurence that he should never have been standing alongside with, yet he was. The occurence of sun in a cloudy day was rare, because all the clouds would only cover up the bright rays of the sun.Ā
And he feared he would do the same to you. He feared that all the negativity he was facing and going through in his life would only weigh you down, covering up all the spark that could have been brought out of you.
Although you never spoke up about it, he knew that he was probably wearing you down. How could he have not noticed it? He had been observing you, from the moment both of you got together to now.
Even the slightest change you made caused his heart to stutter with guilt. He knew he was the problem, the weight that was holding you down. If he continued to stay with you, the guilt that was slowly consuming his heart whole would only reveal his selfishness more and more.
He had kept you for far too long. Probably longer than he should have.Ā
"Let's break up."
The words fell out of his lips, following with a loud swallowāone that echoed louder in his ears, in comparison to his softspoken words. Initially planning to not even glance up towards the direction of your face, afraid to make out the expression on your face, he ended up doing so anyway.
Considering that you hadn't said anything, he could've said it too softly, you needed him to repeat it once moreāeven if the next words from his shuddering lips would probably reveal the raw notes of vulnerability he had been trying to hide from you.
Every single bit of insecurity, weariness and guilt.
Yet, as soon as he met your gaze, he knew he didn't have to say another word. Your gaze held an emotion he had never wanted to see from you all this while, causing his glance to quickly turn into a flicker.
"What..?"
You had spoken up, an audible crack in your voice. Something that caused the strings of guilt to pull tighter around his heart. If he hadn't stayed with you for that long, maybe his disappearance would have been easier for you to accept.
Yet, now, because of his selfishness, his choice wouldn't immediately benefit you. It would've pained you first. But he believed, you would come around to understand.
This was all for the better. Or at least that was what he had been telling himself repeatedly, almost every minute or second. Especially during those times when he couldn't be there for youālike the perfect boyfriend would.
Before he sat down at the dinner table, his tie hung low from his unstraightened white blouse and messy collar. Work would leave him tired and heavy, far from feeling hunger. Though how could he resist eating? Especially when he would never fail to come home to a colourful spread of homecooked food wrapped in cling wrap laid out on the table for him. You worked your own 9 to 5, but you would never quit the habit of cooking for him a nutritious meal. For if not for your efforts, he would've leaned into curating an unhealthy lifestyle of cup noodles and skipping meals due to the nature of his job.
Before he tucked himself to bed, where you had already lay waiting for him. Except, he has showed up too late to catch you awake. You used to lay in bed, fighting against your heavy eyelids, just so that you could kiss him on the cheek before you fell asleepāsomething that had became a nightly ritual for the both of you, when you and Akaashi had just started dating. But slowly, it became more apparent that work would hold him back late, waiting for him was simply redundant.
Before he finished washing up, he would wake up to his toothbrush sitting on the sink, waiting for him. The toothpaste was no longer fresh, almost dried from the long hours of exposure to the air. But whenever he placed the bristles to his teeth, he would never fail to taste the sweet taste of toothpaste, almost a mimicry of the love you poured into even the simple act of preparing his toothbrush. This love was bound to stop pulling at his heartstrings in the way he loved though, for he slowly found himself regretting being unable to wake up with youālike any other loving couple would.
Every single sweet promise and whisper the two of you had made with one another, before finally tasting the true bittersweet life of a working couple living together, was slowly vanishing faster than dust.
His soft apologies about never being able to stay by your side after work was slowly becoming helpless guilt. Something that would only build up, with no way to stop itāuntil he fixed the root cause. He knew that your forced smiles which came along with the soft polite "it's okay" was just a facade to hide your disappointment.Ā
Because today, when he finally took up the courage to ask his supervisor to leave work early so that he could surprise you at home and take you out on a final date that you would love, he saw a glimmer of joy in your eyes that he hadn't seen in a long time.
That was when he knew you hadn't shown real joy to him in a long time. All those times when he tried to convince himself that you were genuinely happy suddenly became futile in that moment, for he knew those were just his false positivity talking.
It was also in that moment, his head reminded him the reason why it was better to leave you. Even if he knew that you would cry and throw a fuss, just like right now.
"Keiji. Listen to me, you're not thinking straight."
Your words brought him back to the present. He could feel your hands gripping his shoulders tightly, your nails digging into the skin underneath his shirt fabric slightly.Ā
That was when he realised your nails weren't short anymore. They had grown out, while he wasn't paying attention to your hands anymore. While nails grow out quickly, it still meant that he hadn't paid attention to you for a while now.
"Keiji."
You repeat once more, this time your words more firm. It was in that tone you had once told him about, smiling happily as you mentioned it ever so casuallyā"when I call you in this tone, just know I mean it so seriously."Ā
Back then, he had never thought he would find himself coming to a day when he would hear you call him in such a tone. He never wanted to make the you, who was usually carefree and joyous become serious, especially towards him. If you were serious, it usually meant something grave or terrible had happened.
He never wanted to be your definition of terrible.Ā Never.
"I know what I am doing."
He finally spoke, his words a lot more stable than he had expected. Especially when his heart was in a turmoil, right now. He could tell his heart was suffering. Suffering from realising if you actually stopped begging him now, he would become alone. Suffering from noticing all the fear and sadness you were feeling from his words. Suffering from this mere choice alone.
If not for his tone, perhaps he would've taken back the next few words that slipped out of his mouth. Yet, his choice became clearer from the sound and stable voice he held. He knew that his tone was his brain's way of indicating to his heart that this was a choice he would stand by right now. Even if it hurt emotionally, this choice was the most sound and logical decision he could make right now. One that would make up for all the feelings of remorse and guilt he had been feeling towards you.
"I should have done this a while ago. We were bound to fall apart a long time ago. We both know that."
He watched as you clenched your teeth together, almost as if you were rejecting that idea in your head. Perhaps, that flicker of hope he had of you realising this had came trueājust in a smaller and softer manner, one that even you had hoped not to admit.
It also made him realise he was truly a selfish person. He hadn't even thought about how asking to break up with him would probably pain you as well. Yet, all along he had been hoping the thought of breaking up with him would surface in your mind as well, just so that he didn't have to be the one to end things.
So that the break up could end in a way that he could call "done by fate." There wasn't another way to turn it around, you had already asked for it, he was only being less selfish by accepting. Yet, even that outcome itself would have been selfish of him to hope for.
Every part of him which was about you was selfish. And that selfishness made his core belief that breaking up with you was the best choice he could make stronger.
If he continued holding onto you, he would be stealing you of joy. And he would be stealing himself the opportunity to become someone better. Someone without selfish desires, someone without guilt and someone without the burden of dragging you down with him.
"You're better without me, Yn."
Before he had even noticed it, his hands had moved on its own to pry yours away from his shoulders. Every part of his conscience had became accepting towards the impending end of this relationship.
It wasn't that the thought never came to his mind, until now. It was only he had rejected that thought, silently. Every part of him had done so initially, until it became only his heartā¦and finally, none of him could reject it.Ā
You were perfect for somebody else. And that somebody else wasn't him. You could have been the one for him, but he could never have shaped himself to become the one for you.
A/N: did this instead of clearing all the drafts I had because we love impulsive ideas! i want to say this is inspired by the new olivia rodrigo album but im afraid it's not. I just heard a little more honest by joon and this thought coursed through my mind rather. BUT!! some songs from you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love works (for reader's perspective). btw im also sorry because lowk this could've probably been longer but I couldn't figure where to properly end it (and my schedule doesn't help) anyways, first akaashi related thing that i've written and it's angst! yay! (Im so worried I badly mischaracterised him in this one ngl)
cw: lowkey implied second chance, college au, post-breakup (kuroo & reader used to date), kuroo is secretly a loser for you, third person perspective, (kind of) open ending, probably ooc
note: this is my submission for echoes & verses event ! (heh) inspired by the song, "taking whats not yours" by tv girl
Last summer was messy for Kuroo.
While he usually enjoyed summer holidays, especially since it was a holiday made to welcome changesānew haircuts, glow-ups or even new relationships.
Yet, last summer was one of his worst summer holiday.
Not only had he not received any glow-ups, his face still blooming with pimples here and there, but he had also lost a relationship.
And that relationship was yours.
It was something he had barely seen foredooming. Everything had been perfect beforeāthe two of you making summer plans, from texting about it nonstop to falling asleep on calls with one anotherāthe fate of it ending seemed almost impossible.
Yet, now he lost you.
And can only miss you.
On the first week, Kuroo found himself crying whenever he had time to keep himself occupied with thoughts of you in his head. On certain days, he would even wake up with tear streaks lining from his eyesāa clear indication he dreamt of you.
On the second week, Kuroo had finally willed himself to stop crying over you. His eyes were less swollen but he found himself avoiding every mere mention of youāfrom going to places you often frequented to escaping a conversation that had a risk of your name being brought upāfearing it would trigger his emotional state once again.
On the third week, Kuroo left you text messages and calls all day and night. During the day, he would tell you random updates of his life. But in the night, he would get more emotional, sometimes recounting things he missed about you.
It buzzed your phone day and night, yet you never made a move to block him or silence the notifications. Every time you thought about it, your fingers wouldn't move to press the block button.
By the fourth week, Kuroo seemed to have went back to normal. His usual cocky and confident demeanour kicking back in once again.
He stopped texting you, your phone going back to its radio silenceāwhat seemed almost abnormal to you now. It had took you a while to get used to how you would no longer wake up to a chain of messages from Kuroo, being the melancholic ex he was.
Rather, he was back to being active on his socials, posting every single hangout he had with his bunch. A part of you wanted to take it as his way of updating you on his life, without looking too clingy. Since you had always checked his instagram stories.
Even after your breakup.
But in actuality, Kuroo was still struggling with the breakup.
Every part of him longed to send another text.
Tell you he missed you, once again.
Tell you he seemed almost crazy, calling out to you to help him find something he might have misplaced in his own home, when you weren't even there.
Until he found your lip balm, sitting in the drawers of his nightstand.
He had been trying to find his pair of night reading glasses, which he had perhaps misplaced once againāsleepily placing them without much thought, somewhere he had forgotten one night before bed.
He had initially intended to immediately return it to you, realising it was yours. The brand of lip balm which you had particularly loved using, claiming it was really effective for those dry lips of yours.
It even had a scent.
The sweet smell of berries.
He had always thought how it suited youāyour sweet and loving personality, the way you had always been so endearing to him.
Without much thought, he brought the stick close to his lips, smearing it slightly over his lipsāgently and carefully.
It was just a stick of lip balmāone that you had used often. Yet, it was also a stick of lip balm which brought a small smile to his face.
Wearing it felt like the aftertaste of your kisses.
No matter how chaste your kisses were, you never failed to let him catch a whiff of your berry scented lip balm which you wore.
It filled the longing in his heart for a short moment, enough for him to tuck the lip balm into his pocket.
He had already lost the physical presence of you.
He wouldn't wish to lose more of what reminded him of you.
a/n: ignore timestamp ... haha (it only reflects the time i worked on this ...)
akaashikeiji, who notices you one day at the library. he sees you reading the powerpoint slides in front of you before jotting down notes in your notebook. he studies the way your hands make random gestures and move as you mutter to yourself, recalling and remembering your lecture. he finds the gestures a bit weird, but maybe it was your way of studying.
akaashikeiji, who comes back to the library the next day and finds you reading a book this time. you calmly flip through the pages of your book as your head unconsciously bops to the music. the book youāre reading is a book that he considers a favorite of his, which makes his face light up. when he asked people about that book, they werenāt familiar with it, yet here you are, headphones on and your eyes reading the pages of one of his favorite books. he wants to approach you and ask what you thought about it, but that would be rude of him. he doesnāt want to disturb you while you are reading, so he walks away and decides to ask you about it next time (and to ask for your name).
akaashikeiji, who is scanning the book titles of one shelf. he is trying to find a specific textbook for one of his academic papers until he notices the title of his favorite book. he wonders if it was the same copy you were reading the other day. āitās probably a spare copy,ā he thinks, yet he still grabs it from the shelf and checks the library card. low and behold, thereās a new name written under his own name. he smiles when he notices that your name fits you and repeats your name over and over in his head all day, but it was just to remember your name when he asks about your thoughts on the book.
akaashi keiji, who finally approaches you. itās a fairly busy day in the library, and there arenāt a lot of spaces available (his usual spot is taken). youāre sitting at a big table with numerous books surrounding you as you write down notes. he gathers his courage and approaches you. āexcuse me,ā he clears his throat, making you remove one of your earphones. āis this seat taken?ā he asks, gesturing to the seat at the end of the table. he didnāt want to sit in front of or beside you to not make you uncomfortable or bother you. you smile up at him and shake your head, āno, go ahead.ā he smiles and sits down at your table. while youāre taking down notes, he observes the titles of the books around you and takes a mental note of the books youāre reading and borrowing.
akaashi keiji, who suddenly is borrowing a lot of books similar to the ones you borrow or read. he feels a sense of relief whenever he doesnāt spot your name already written on the library card. he makes sure that his name is written legibly and neatly, so you can write yours underneath his. he reads the books and finds himself enjoying them, not only because of the plot or the writing, but also because he learns more about you: your major, favorite writing styles, favorite topics, favorite authors, etc.
akaashikeiji, who recognizes your figure leaving the library as he was entering. youāre on your phone as you both cross paths, and unfortunately, you donāt see him. you bump into his chest, making your cheeks heat up in embarrassment, and apologize. āitās alright,ā he assures you as he flashes you a small smile. he watches you bow towards him again before walking away. when he turns back front, he notices a small bookmark on the ground. he picks it up, and he instantly notices your name written on the bottom. he looks back in the direction you walked in to see if you were still around, but you were already gone. he sighs before placing the bookmark in his binder, promising himself that he will give it to you the next time youāre at the library.
akaashikeiji, who observes the way your back moves as you take a nap on the library table. itās midterm season, so it was no surprise that you were also at the library. youāre already asleep when he sits down at the same table, so he makes sure that heās extra quiet. time passes by, and the library is closing soon. to not be scolded by the librarian, he carefully walks up to you and gently shakes your shoulder. you wake up and look up at him groggily. āsorry, but the library is closing soon,ā he whispers, fully apologetic for waking you from your peaceful slumber. you yawn and rub your eyes before you thank him and start gathering your things. he quickly remembers your fallen bookmark from last time, so he takes the bookmark from his binder and hands it to you. āoh, by the way, you bumped into me the other day, and this probably fell out of your book.ā you only look up at him with surprise and full appreciation before thanking him profusely. you donāt know that he made extra sure that your bookmark wouldnāt fold or get any marks to not upset you.
akaashikeiji, who is finding for a seat again. itās an unusually busy day for the library, so his eyes scan his surroundings, trying to find an available seat, and he spots you, like he always does. youāre sitting, reading another book at a small table, and by some miracle, the seat in front of you is empty. as heās approaching you, you look up and flash him a smile. āhi! you were the one who found and returned my bookmark the other day?ā you ask. āyes, that would be me,ā he grins, and you thank him again for his kind gesture, to which he says that it was no problem. he then asks if youāre sitting with anyone, but you only shake your head. he takes the seat in front of you and unpacks his things. āoh, i just realized i never asked for your name,ā you say, and when he introduces himself to you, your eyes sparkle and your face lights up. āoh! youāre the akaashi keiji that i keep seeing in the library cards of the books i read! it seems like youāve already borrowed every single book in this library.ā he only laughs, and he thinks that that is close to the truth, but he doesnāt mind it because youāve now noticed him.
CW! | written from third perspective (yn so mysterious rn hohoho), mildly bittersweet (at least the earlier portion), quite a short one (becos
There is always something intriguing about a taken womanāor at least a woman who seemed out of reach from you, even if you wanted to reach out to her.
And to Yamaguchi, she was exactly that.
Ever since her first orderāthe order that splayed Yamaguchi with despondency, yet also the same order that left him thinking...wondering and yearning...
Thinking about when she would come back.
Wondering if she would get a different order of flowers if she came backāmaybe it was just wishful thinking, but he hoped she would get yellow carnations.
And lastly, yearning.
Yearning for answers behind her previous order.
Yet, she never seemed to make any signs of returning. He didn't even catch a glimpse of her whenever he strolled the streets nearby before and after his shift.
It was to a certain point, Yamaguchi almost thought that he had gotten over herāeverything about her...from the thought of her to the feelings she gave him.
Unfortunately, the thought of forgetting her remained a thought.
Before Yamaguchi could even properly reframe the thought into an actual action step, she returned once again.
A similar bright smile.
A similar white dress, still not ironed out.
And of course, not forgetting the similar order of three daisy gerbaras.
Of all the things she could change about her iconic reappearance in front of the floral shop, it wasn't her flower order. Instead, she had changed the date.
The date was no longer a random date she could pick out from a calendar, but a rather specific one.
It was valentine's day.
She had returned to the floral shop, asking for three daisy gerberas, on a valentine's day.
"um so is this tmi or WHATT?" (additional notes):
fun fact about this chapter's name is that carnations have many meanings (and NO! I did not name it over the fact that yellow carnations were mentioned) but because carnations (in general) actually means fascination
I wanted to describe how yamaguchi felt fascination towards ynāfrom the very start of her appearance in the floral shop
but yellow carnations have another meaning!! they actually mean rejection or disappointment (yamaguchi saying "I hope she comes to get yellow carnations" is basically saying I hope she got rejected)
I know that in most western cultures, black is formally worn as the respectful attire to attend a funeral/grave BUT for asians (or at least my side of the world) we do wear white too !! since white means beginnings (aka. beginning of a new life)
can y'all guess why yn has been buying gerberas now ... or is this still too ominous?? (IF NOT stay till the next ep to find out more ..!!)
I hope shoyo didn't seem too bokuto like btw ... (I wrote this arnd late midnight so the possibility of me having too much fun and js messing around their personalities ARE SO POSSIBLE.)
masterlist | next ā
a/n: short one because I don't want to reveal so much of yn's actual intentions yet (regarding why she's getting three gerberas) I hope this didn't feel like a filler chapter (I PROMISE IT WASN'T MEANT TO BE)

at the ravens eye diner, there were many different regulars. the old man who came in and ordered 2 eggs over medium every other day. the woman who brought in her 2 kids every saturday morning. the girl who brought in her tiny dog and always ordered him a small cup of whipped cream. your personal favorite? the studier.
his schedule for coming into the diner never landed on a certain day, but he always entered in the afternoon, you assumed when his classes ended. he sat at a small two-person table by the window, set his backpack down and took out a stack of books, pens, and a notebook.
he wasnāt your favorite regular just because he was quiet and never asked you annoying questions like other regulars, which didnāt hurt, but he was so attractive it was shocking to you that he had never brought a date in with him.
you had made plenty of assumptions about the boy with the dark hair and his stack of books. based on his selection you assumed he had to be an english major or something of the sort.
before you even came over to greet him, you filled up your favorite mug with coffee, grabbed a container of creamer and walked it over to his table.
āhi.ā you would greet, setting down his drink which he never failed to order. he would look up at you, and smile.
āthanks. iām starting to think i come here too often if you have my order memorized.ā
you laugh.
āitās not like coffee and creamer is the hardest thing to memorize yāknow.ā
āi guess youāre right. i just realized iāve never asked your name.ā
āits y/n, you?ā
āakaashi.ā
āgood to know!ā you smile and walk away, leaving him to do his studying. heāll stay at that table for the next 3 hours, eyes skimming across the pages of his books, making annotations, and sipping the coffee you would refill every 20 minutes or so.
you always took notes of the books he was reading, asking him whenever he needed a refill for any recommendations, and he was always happy to take a break from studying to talk to you.

-akaashi is in fact an english major
-one time he tried to bring bokuto to study with him but that didn't really go too well
