content/warning. mix of descriptive text and social media posts!, nosy managers (they want the tea), inconsistent timestamps, a bit of akaashi pov at the end
author's note. its literally 4 am rn but here i am LMAO. also!! since this series is halfway done, taglist is now closed
after akaashi's message last night, you immediately fell asleep like a baby. maybe it was because your stomach was full, or maybe because of the time you spent with akaashi. either way, it admittedly was because of akaashi.
the next morning, you feel the sunlight from the windows on your skin, forcing you to wake up. as soon as your eyes flutter open, you see four familiar faces of the other managers staring at you, making you yelp.
"what happened last night? we heard from a little birdie that they heard you and akaashi by the vending machine last night." yukie asks, a smirk on her face. "by little birdie, we mean bokuto. he was up looking for akaashi, and he went to look for him, only to see both of you snuggling on the sofa."
"snuggling on the sofa, huh?" kiyoko chuckles as yachi nervously giggles, "t-that sounds kind of romantic, (y/n)-san."
you rub your eyes as you sit up, still barely awake. "damn, not even a good morning?" you say with a yawn. "well yeah! this is juicy news and development with your man." kaori excitedly claims while kiyoko, yachi, and yukie giggle at the mention of 'crush.'
you feel your cheeks warm up. "he is not my man! plus, we didn't snuggle. we just talked..." you cross your arms and pout, feeling your cheeks get warmer by the second, and the others' laughter echoes throughout the room. "sure," kaori says, prolonging the last syllable before she playfully rolls her eyes.
she pulls you out of your futon and pushes you towards the bathroom door. "now, freshen up! you guys are leaving after lunch, so you gotta make the best of it before you leave your crush behind!" she pushes you inside the bathroom and once the door is shut, you shout, "again, he's not my crush!" but the your racing heart and the way your mind is repeatedly picturing the soft smile he gave you last night says otherwise.
by the time the matches roll around, the teasing should have been the last thing on your mind, but apparently, fate has other plans. between scribbling down notes for karasuno and handing out water bottles and towels, your gaze wonders more than once at fukurodani's setter.
his eyes are still as sharp and composed, with every set perfectly measured, but his skill isn't what distracted you. once, in between a point, his eyes flicker towards you, and when your eyes meet, instead of looking away, he lets a small smile tug at his lips before returning to the game. you feel your stomach twist, and you nearly drop your pen, your cheeks burning just a tiny bit.
later, when kiyoko asks you if you could get new towels, you don't hesitate and are on your way back from the hallway with an armful of towels, you nearly collide with a figure. you take a mistep and almost fall, but they catch your arm, steadying you. you sigh in relief, and as you say your thank yous, you notice that the figure who helped you is akaashi. he nods to acknowledge your gratitude, not letting go of his hand on your arm, the warmth of his hand seeping through the fabric of your sleeve. when he notices your gaze on it, he immediately lets go and nods nonchalantly, acknowledging your presence and gratitude. still, his touch leaves you flustered, so you walk away without saying another word.
during a water break, you realize your bottle is empty and you pout, trying to get the last drop since you were too tired (lazy) to go refill it. akaashi casually walks by and notices your predicament, so he holds out his hand, quietly offering his own bottle. your eyes widen and flicker between his face and his extended hand, feeling embarrassment consume you. "eh?" was all you could say before he says, "your bottle is empty, so have some of my water." you feel your cheeks burn, waving your hands at him. "you don't need to do that, akaashi! plus, those bottles are for the players."
"then let me refill your bottle for you." he attempts to grab your bottle, but you snatch it away before he can, bowing to him apologetically repeatedly for rejecting his kindness as he rubs the back of his neck sheepishly.
from afar, the fukurodani team eyes both of you suspiciously, only noticing the interaction between the two of you. "what's going on with them?" konoha asks. bokuto looks over and lets out a noise when he notices you. "ooh! i saw akaashi with them last night by the vending machines!" he says casually, and the rest of the team looks at him like his head is floating. akaashi spent time with someone other than bokuto? voluntarily? one from another team too?
a collective silence falls over the team before konoha mutters, "are we sure that was our setter?"
as akaashi jogs back to his team after way too many apologies and assurances from you, kiyoko, and yachi take his place beside you with smirks on their faces, making you raise an eyebrow at them. "what's so funny?" you ask, and they giggle before kiyoko whispers, "your not-crush seems awfully attentive," making you even more embarrassed (if it was possible).
by the time the matches end and your team is packing up, your notebook is filled with notes, while your mind is full of akaashi.
you were helping loading the team's bags into the bus when a familiar shadow falls beside you, making you look up at them. "hey," akaashi says, his voice quieter than usual. "can i talk to you before you leave?"
you blink, surprised, but still, you nod. he leads you just a little way from the bus, just enough to make the noise fade into the background. "i just wanted to say that it was nice meeting you," he says, his usual calmness faltering slightly before his lips curl into that soft, careful smile you'd grown far too fond of in such a short time. "this isn't goodbye, it's just....a see you later," he says and somehow, those words make your heart race more than anything else he'd said all weekend.
later. the word loops in your mind as you watch him walk back to his team, and you realize you've never wanted 'later' to come so soon.
sugawara koushi, who is your coworker, your fellow teacher, is the definition of the man-next-door. sweet, kind, and endlessly patient, he's loved by his colleagues and students. when you were first hired, you were nervous, as you didn't have much experience yet, but he was the first to welcome you. his easy smile and gentle reassurance helped you find your confidence. whenever you pass by his classroom, you catch yourself lingering at the door. his students listen intently, eyes wide as he explains with that soft, encouraging voice. when one of his kids speaks up and asks a question, he lets out a chuckle, his eyes crinkling, and his laugh echoes through the room. your heart flutters inside your chest, and you force yourself to walk away before he notices you.
sugawara koushi, who brings you a cup of coffee when you are grading papers in the faculty room. you were stressed; your apartment has an infestation, so you were sleeping at your parents' home for the meantime, and on top of that, your class was being extra mischievous the past few days. he noticed how you were slumped over the papers in front of you for hours. when you finally stood up from your table to go to the bathroom, he took notice of the dark circles under your eyes. he frowned before making a cup of coffee for you as he figured that you needed a little 'pick-me-up' after a long week. you look up at him and he smiles back at you. "i won't bother you for long but i thought you needed this," he says as he slides a coaster on your cubicle table before putting the cup on it and walking away to allow you to continue working. you stare at the mug in front of you before you feel yourself smile for the first time this week.
sugawara koushi, who offers to look after the kids during playtime. both of you had shared playtimes, so you both were looking after your classes at the playground. as you laugh at something suga said, you feel your phone vibrate in your pocket. you fish it out and see your mom's caller id, you were about to press end since you were still working until he stopped you. "hey, how about i look after both of our classes while you take that?" he suggests and you raise your eyebrow at him, asking if he was sure and he nods. "don't worry about it. don't keep your mom waiting," he winks, and you smile before walking away from the noise to answer your call, leaving him in charge. when you finally returned, the first thing you notice is not the playground itself or the kids, but him. he is crouching low, his expression gentle but serious as he examines the small scrape on one of your students' hands. the little girl sniffles, bottom lip trembling, as he dabs at the cut with the small first-aid kit beside him. "there we go," he murmurs, placing a band-aid neatly over her tiny head. "see? all better now." he gives her one of his sunshine smiles, and she cheers up immediately, thanking him before going back to her friends. your heart thumps against your chest as you stare at him. watching him like this, the epitome of warmth and care, made something flutter deep inside you. he looks up, catching your gaze across the playground. he smiles at you again, softer this time, and he lifts his hand to wave you over, and you look away before your racing heartbeat betrays you.
sugawara koushi, who charms the single mom club. when the class day is over, the moms crowd around him and thank him for taking such good care of their kids. he only rubs the back of his neck and smiles nervously, saying that it was only part of his job, and they swoon. you notice his uncomfortable stance, so you approach him and say that the assistant principal needs him in their office asap. his eyes widen before they catch your mischievous wink, relief washing over him. "that's right! so sorry, but i need to go right now." the moms frown, but they let him go, allowing you both to slip away. once far away from the ears of the moms, he sighs and thanks you. "thank you so much. i didn't think they would let me go." you laugh as you hook your arm around his, leading you both to the faculty room. "i wouldn't blame them though, you're too charming for your own good," you say without a beat, not noticing the flush of his cheeks and the corner of his lips turning up in a small smile.
sugawara koushi, who is the reason why your other coworkers keep teasing you. it really wasn't your fault; he just had that kind of presence. everyone adores him. he's kind, patient, thoughtful, and impossibly charming without even trying, so the moment anyone noticed the way he gravitates toward you, the whispers started. like how he'd always save you a seat beside him during lunch, or how he'd drop by your classroom at least once a day under to "check in," or how, during meetings, he'd casually lean over to whisper something towards you. one afternoon, he slips you a piece of chocolate with a soft 'you looked tired today' and one of your coworkers notices. "wow, (y/n), i didn't know you two were that close." your cheeks burn as you stammer "it's not like that!" while he just chuckles, his eyes full of amusemnt, completely unbothered by this teasing. if anything, it almost looks like he enjoys it. you confront him about it later, and he only tilts his head with a teasing smirk. "what can i say? i like looking out for you," he says lightly, and you now understand why your coworkers wouldn't let it go. after all, he made it far too easy for them to believe there was something more between the two of you.
sugawara koushi, who loves his class moe than anything. you're standing by the doorframe of his classroom, chatting about lesson plans and how your kids behaved today. it's past dismissal, and he starts laughing at something you said when the sound of small footsteps makes you pause. two of his students run up to him, throwing their tiny arms around his leg. "sensei! thank you for today!" they giggle, and he warmly laughs in return, crouching down to ruffle one kid's hair, then the other's. the kids beam at him as they chatter happily before skipping away to their parents. you should've looked away, maybe pretended to be busy with something else, but instead, you are frozen in place. watching the gentle way he interacted with them, the way his laugh echoes through the hallway, the way his eyes soften when he spoke to them. your heart gives an almost painful flutter, and you quickly press your hand to your chest. oh no.
sugawara koushi, who is asked by his kids if you two were together. you drop by his classroom after school, helping him tidy up the stray crayons and stack the tiny chairs. the two of you are chatting easily, laughter spilling between you like it always did, until you both notice a few of his students lingering by the door. you bid him goodbye with a smile and once you were away, his students wander over to him, their little faces full of curiosity. one of them tugs on his sleeve, tilting their head curiously. "sensei, are you and (y/n)-sensei together?" he freezes, blinking for a few moments before he lets out a small, flustered laugh. "o-oh my, what makes you ask something like that?" he attempts to be nonchalant about it, but his pink cheeks betray him, making the kids giggle, unconvinced. "because you're always smiling when (y/n)-sensei is here," another chimes in, the others agreeing. he rubs the back of his neck, crouching down to their level with an embarrassed grin. "you all notice too much, you know that?" he teases, dodging the question, and the kids only giggle harder. "alright, enough matchmaking, you little rascals. time to go home," he shoos them away while they whisper amongst themselves. as he gathers the last of the crayons, he can't help but think of you walking out with that smile and how much harder it is to deny the question than he thought it would be.
sugawara koushi, who softly knocks on the door of your classroom. you look up from your desk as you're packing your things, the late afternoon sun spilling across the rows of tiny desks. he has his sleeves rolled up neatly, his usual easy smile softening when he catches your gaze. "hey," he greets as he approaches your desk, his warm voice quieter than usual. "long day, huh?" you nod, letting out a chuckle as you zip your bag. "that's one way to put it." you notice he starts to shift his weight, scratching the back of his neck, as if he is debating with himself. you turn your attention towards him and before you can ask him about it, he finally asks, "if you're not too tired, do you maybe want to grab some coffee with me? there's a cafe nearby. my treat." his cheeks turn pink, yours following suit as your heart skips a beat at his shy tone. "you don't have to say yes, i know you're tired from today but yeah, my treat." he rarely looks nervous, but right now, his eyes are flickering between you and the floor as if he's afraid you'll say no but you smile, slinging your bag over your shoulder. "coffee sounds perfect." his shoulders relax in relief and his face lights up, his nervousness from a moment ago fading. a big smile spreads across his face, and your chest flutters as it always does with him. "great! let's go before i lose my courage," he teases, walking to the door and opening it for you. you chuckle, both of you walking out of your classroom together, and as he falls into step beside you, you realize this coffee isn't just coffee. it's the start of something new.
summary. it's the day of the practice match with fukurodani, and you and akaashi finally meet, but can both of you get a chance to talk to each other?
content/warning. mix of social media posts and descriptive text (more of descriptive text tho)!!!
author's note. submitted chapter 1 of my thesis paper, so yk what that means! a new chapter for accidentally yours <333
this chapter is less social media au (?) since akaashi and reader are finally meeting, so gotta get the feels YK!!!! so excited to write the next chapters AAAA
after you read up on the messages of the karasuno group chat, you quickly take a shower and grab some breakfast before bidding your parents goodbye and walking out of your house into the middle of the night.
the sky is still dark, the moon covered by the clouds, yet the sky is still as beautiful as ever.
you walk to karasuno, the only thing being audible is your footsteps and the meows of the neighborhood cats.
as you get to the school gates, you see the volleyball team already there. you walk up to them, greeting everyone with a good morning, which makes the third years smile warmly at you. "good morning, (y/n)," daichi greets. before you could answer back, nishinoya, tanaka, and hinata energetically jump around you.
"(y/n)-san, you're here!"
"good morning, (y/n)!"
"are you excited to see the setter of fukurodani?" tanaka teases, and you snap your head towards him (and kageyama's at the mention of the word 'setter'). "why do you say that? i haven't even met him yet." you feel your cheeks heat up, and you push tanaka's shoulder, making him laugh out loud. "don't worry, (y/n)! we just want you to be happy, so noya, hinata, and i will be your..." he looks at the other two as he prolongs the last syllable before posing. "wingmen!" they shout, making jazz hands and winking at you as the others team members, especially the third years, laugh.
at the side, tsukishima glares at them, rolling his eyes. "can you idiots stop torturing (y/n) and shut up for the rest of the trip?" the three of them start trying to fight tsukishima until ukai claps his hands to attention. "alright, let's settle down now!" immediately, everyone stops and gathers around the two adults before takeda starts speaking.
"we'll be travelling to tokyo for our practice match with fukurodani, and we'll arrive at tokyo at around 10 am, so please relax for the rest of the trip and reserve your energy on the court," he says, side-eyeing the energetic trio of tanaka, nishinoya, and hinata, making them blush in embarrassment. "if any of you need anything, just approach ukai-san or i, depending on who's on the wheel, since we'll be taking turns driving." everyone nods and bows, thanking takeda and ukai before filing into the bus one by one.
inside, you sit with kiyoko and yachi near the front rows of the bus: you in the window seat, yachi in the aisle seat, and kiyoko in the middle. while waiting for the bus to start, you quickly whip out your phone to send a message to kaori and yukie.
you smile at their messages, knowing they woke up from their sleep to reply to you and wish you safe travels. ukai starts the engine, and the karasuno gates slowly disappear as you make your way to tokyo.
throughout the ride, you sleep, which you are fortunate for because when you woke up, the sun was already out and you were 30 minutes away from fukurodani, according to takeda.
you spend the remaining 30 minutes talking with kiyoko and yachi, and before you know it, the bus stops at the gates of fukurodani.
ukai parks the bus at the designated parking area before you all gather your things and file out of the bus. as soon as you step out, you hear a voice shout your name. you look ahead and see kaori and yukie. kaori is waving her arm enthusiastically while yukie has her arms behind her back, smiling softly.
"(y/n)!" kaori shouts as she runs towards you and gives you a big hug, laughing as you return her bear hug. "i'm so glad you guys are finally here!" she exclaims after you break from her hug to embrace yukie.
the team slowly gathers behind you as ukai and takeda walk towards you three. "good morning! i'm ittetsu takeda, the faculty advisor. i assume you're kaori and yukie?" takeda asks with a polite smile, and both of your friends nod, bowing to greet the entire team. "yes, sensei. thank you for coming over, and welcome to fukurodani, everyone!"
"you don't need to be so polite! we should be the ones thanking you!" takeda says as he flails his hands, blushing in embarrassment. kaori and yukie chuckle, shaking their heads. "your team came all this way to play with us and help us improve. we're thankful for karasuno," yukie replies, and takeda only rubs the back of his neck, flustered.
"you guys must be exhausted from the trip. you can rest up for a bit before playing," kaori says, but daichi shakes his head. "it's alright, we can play right now if that's okay. we all slept during the trip, thanks to takeda-sensei and ukai-san." kaori and yukie both look at each other, raising their eyebrows at daichi's words.
"are you sure? we can just have the matches after lunch, we certainly don't mind."
"it really is no problem. we've been itching to stretch our legs on the court," he turns to the rest of the team. "isn't that right, guys?" the others shout in agreement (especially hinata and noya), and the two managers only shrug their shoulders. "alright, if you say so. follow us!" kaori exclaims, walking towards the gym, and the team excitedly follows.
as you approach the gym, your eyes widen at the sight. compared to karasuno, their gym is so much bigger and wider. you feel a chill run up your spine in intimidation, but you shake it off.
yukie opens the door before they step inside and shouts, "we have guests!" everyone inside immediately stops and gathers around. you feel yourself getting intimidated again, so you divert your eyes to the ground. daichi steps forward and greets the fukurodani team, "good morning! we're the karasuno volleyball team." he bows, and you all follow. "thank you for the opportunity!" you say in unison before the fukurodani team returns your greeting.
as you straighten up, your eyes immediately lock onto the familiar tall raven-haired boy across you. his sharp gaze moves over the team, observing and calculating until it lands on you. his gaze softens, and a small smile forms on his lips. he doesn't need to ask who you are. because with a single look, he already knows you're the mysterious texter on his phone.
as the day progresses, you busy yourself, barely having time for yourself. all day, you've been doing manager duties: helping the team with their warm-ups, taking notes, helping with the scoring, and preparing the accommodations for everyone with yukie and kaori.
sometimes, you would catch yourself taking glimpses at the familiar yet mysterious akaashi keiji, who definitely piqued your interest. during one match, you were at the side bench with kiyoko and yachi, taking notes and noting possible strategies. instead of focusing on your team, your eyes were locked onto akaashi. your eyes followed the calm precision of his sets, the way he steadied bokuto, the sharp focus in his expression as he observed every little move your team made. you didn't notice how intently you were staring until a gentle nudge from kiyoko snapped you back to reality. when you glance at her, she only smirks, making your cheeks warm up in embarrassment.
you tried to say hi to him, but your duties demanded your full attention. plus, he was playing matches and doing drills left and right, so it would have to wait.
as soon as coach ukai and coach yamji announced that the day was finished, you head to the manager's quarters of the dorm and flop on your futon. you take a nap, ignoring kaori, yukie, kiyoko, and yachi's concerns that you won't have dinner. still, you explain that your body feels too tired and assure them that you'll wake up later to eat something. by the time you wake up, everyone is already sleeping on their futons.
you check the clock, and it's already 10:30 pm. you quietly groan and debate if you should get up, but an old notification catches your attention.
you stare at the messages as your heart races inside your chest. you haven't even said a word to him, yet he was already being thoughtful?
you quietly slip out of your futon and into the hallway, careful not to wake the others up. lord knows how enthusiastic they would be if they knew what you were doing (it would wake the entire dorm).
as you make your way towards the vending machines, you feel the butterflies in your stomach multiply. finally, you're meeting akaashi face-to-face alone and late into the evening. what would you say? what would he say? how would you act? will he like you? will he hate you and block your number? maybe this is a bad idea. maybe you should go back to the dorm and forget about this—
"(y/n)?" you hear a soft voice call out. you snap out of your thoughts and notice that you're standing in front of akaashi, who's sitting in the lounge area in front of the vending machines. you give him a small wave and greet him with a quiet 'hi.'
"hey, you must be hungry. c'mon, i have your food here." he motions for you to sit, and you do so, choosing to sit near him. once seated, he pushes the plate of onigiri on the coffee table towards you. "i didn't notice you earlier during dinner and kaori told me about your nap, so i set this aside before the others could finish everything. i also wasn't sure which filling you preferred, so i took one from each." he smiles warmly at you. he's too thoughtful. you quietly thank him before eating the onigiri.
silence then fills the air, and you aren't sure if you should speak first. you don't know what to say. he's right in front of you, but you can't think of a single word to say until you hear akaashi let out a soft exhale.
"it's strange, isn't it?" he tilts his head slightly, quiet amusement flickering in his eyes. "we've only a couple of messages, but somehow, it feels like i already knew you before tonight." he gently smiles at you. "though i suppose this is the first time we've actually spoken."
you feel your cheeks warm up. you aren't sure if you're embarrassed or not, knowing that this was because you had mistaken his number for kaori's, but akaashi didn't say it in a teasing manner; he's just stating the fact, and maybe he's grateful? nevertheless, you find yourself smiling back at him.
"yeah, i guess so." you say before swallowing your bite of onigiri.
"then, i guess i should introduce myself properly." you nervously smile as akaashi turns to you with a curious gaze. "i'm (y/n) (y/l/n), karasuno's manager." you introduce, almost shyly, but the words come out steadier than you expect and he only chuckles. "and i'm akashi keiji, second-year setter of fukurodani. though i think we both knew that already." you chuckle in return, and you both smile at each other.
the tension eases instantly, replaced with something softer, something new yet familiar. before you realize it, you're both smiling. not just out of politeness, but because being here, together, feels strangely natural.
your eyes drift off, and it lands on the notebook resting by his side. the page is filled with neatly written notes and diagrams, making it catch your attention. "are those from today's match?" you curiously ask. he blinks then nods. "yeah...i was reviewing plays while waiting for you to wake up." you rub the back of your neck in embarrassment.
"i'm so sorry for keeping you waiting." you bow apologetically, and he shakes his head. "you don't need to apologize, i was being restless anyway." he shyly smiles.
without thinking, you shift closer, drawn to the familiar figures and diagrams since they were similar to your own notes. "mind if i see?" you ask, the edge of your sleeves brushes his as you lean in. "i can give you my notes to make up for making you wait." akaashi hesitates, his eyes observing yours before he smiles softly and places the notebook between you both. "sure, i'd like to hear your thoughts."
time passes by, and you spend it talking strategies with akaashi. your finger traces one of akaashi's neat diagrams as you give him advice, making him hum thoughtfully and nod his head before marking it in his notebook. "you analyze things the way a setter does," he says, making you laugh softly. "i'm just a manager who takes way too many notes."
"i can see why karasuno does well with you around." he says without a beat, and you feel yourself freeze, your heart beating faster. you dismiss his compliment and shift the topic to mask your fluster.
suddenly, you both were talking about anything, everything: favorite foods, school stories, volleyball memories. akaashi listens quietly but intently, his eyes never straying away from yours, and you find yourself asking him questions in return just to listen to his voice.
after some time, akaashi feels his phone vibrate in his pocket and glances at it. "it's almost midnight," he casually says, making your eyes widen. "already?!" he chuckles and gently closes his notebook. "we should get back. tomorrow's another long day."
his voice is soft and quiet, like he doesn't want to let the night end, but he reluctantly stands. "c'mon, i'll walk you back." your heart flutters before you stand up and follow beside him.
the hallway is quiet, shadows stretching along the floor as you walk side by side. neither of you says much, not because it's awkward but because the silence, his company in general, feels comfortable. still, you catch yourself sneaking glances at him under the dim light, memorizing the way he walks and the calm in his expression.
once you reach the manager's quarters, you pause in front of the door, hesitating to end your little rendezvous with akaashi. "thank you again for the food. and everything." you shyly smile, and he nods, offering you a small smile in return. "goodnight, (y/n). sleep well," he softly bids goodbye before walking towards his room.
you quietly enter, letting out a sigh of relief when you see that everyone is still fast asleep. you quickly brush your teeth and slip into your futon. before you fall asleep, you feel your phone vibrate again, and your heart swells one last time for the night.

I MEAN!!!!! we did confess to each other but it was during the pandemic + we went to different colleges, so it was hard ykykyk but BROOOOO i always said to myself that he never liked me like that or he didn't like me as much as i liked him but turns out, he did BC HERE'S THE GAG! 😭
before the pandemic, we both were video calling each other past midnight and the topic was crushes yk. at that time, i was alr starting to like him but he thought i still liked my prev crush. he said he really liked someone bc in his eyes, she stood out from the crowd and was so unique to him AND NOW, LOOKING BACK AT HOW HE DESCRIBED ME......i realized he was talking about me BUT I DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL TOO LATE 🧎♀️
now im reeling and yearning SO HARD bc my soft spot for him never left (?) and IT WAS SO OBVIOUS AND RIGHT IN MY FACE BUT I SELF SABOTAGED 😭
im just PRAYING that we'll cross paths again after i graduate or when i come back home (we're batchmates but i have an extra year bc of architecture and he alr graduated last july) and i hope to god that his feelings never left too

Pairing: Sugawara Kōshi x Reader(can be read as any gender, no pronouns used)
Genre: fluff, comfort
Word Count: 1 280
Warnings: no use of (y/n), grumpy (because worried) Suga
Summary: Suga’s putting a stop to your late night studying.
A/N: I really struggled with finishing anything I’ve started for a few months now, mostly because of this whole AI shit. Less the fear of my stuff getting stolen (although that’s bad enough) but more so of being accused of using it. I’ve never used generative AI and I’ll never touch it, if it can be helped. Anyway, along came @hangjie who seems to be at the same point in her thesis I was at two months ago and here we are. Have some worried Suga. No idea if this is what you had in mind, but maybe you’ll enjoy it.
“What are you doing?“
The gentle, yet reproachful voice made you flinch, and guiltily you turned to look behind you at the source of the scolding. It took your eyes a few seconds, after hours of staring onto your too bright laptop screen, to focus on Suga’s face and-
Oh. He was beautiful.
There was no other word for it, really. The fairy lights that were strung up over his bed, set a soft backlight, his lips and nose throwing subtle shadows over his face where the light of the desk lamp didn’t reach. His silver hair was a mess, his oversized sleep shirt crumpled, and everything about him screamed ‘I just woke up’, everything except his posture. The way he had pushed his hand into his hip, judgingly glaring down to where you sat at his desk had more of a ‘now you’re in trouble’-vibe.
“Do you know how late it is?” He asked when you just stared up at him, your mouth hanging open uselessly, admiring how homey he looked.
“Uhm-,” slightly disoriented from the sudden interruption hours into your study session, you turned back to your laptop. “Ten to two am?”
“Yeah,” he agreed, the annoyance clear in his sleepy voice. “You know what else I’d call it?”
“One fifty?”
You knew you shouldn’t have sassed him like that, not while he was in this – for him untypically grumpy – mood, and not while your back was to him. A moment later, before you quite had time to regret your own choice of words, his hands slammed down on the desk either side of you own, and his warm breath fanned down your neck.
“Too bloody late, that’s what I’d call it.” He took a deep breath, his tone changing with the next sentence. His annoyance was gone, replaced by something much softer, worry, almost sadness. “You know that studying this late isn’t good for you.”
The warm weight against the top of your head gave away that he was resting his chin on your head, doubtlessly trying to see what you were working on.
“If I don’t work on my thesis, I’ll never finish it in time,” you tried explaining.
Above you, Suga clicked his tongue disapprovingly. “Writing your thesis sleep deprived and tired will cost you even more time tomorrow, when you realize that your logic went out the window five pages ago and an elementary student has a better understanding of grammar and spelling than you past midnight. Take it from someone who wrote their thesis like that last year.”
You were about to protest, when he lifted his right hand. “You’re missing a comma here, this should be a semicolon and ‘furthermore’ is written as one word.”
Taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes.
“I get it,” you sighed. “You’ve made your point. I’m unfocused when tired but-”
“No buts.” Without asking, Suga reached for your keypad, quickly punching in the key combination to save all open documents before switching off the screen. “You can continue working tomorrow morning- today morning. After you’ve slept.”
He stood up, finally giving you back the mobility to move your head. Leaning it back, you looked at him upside down. His always kind brown eyes had taken an unyielding, hard shimmer. Teacher-mode. There was no getting out of this now. Not without starting a fight, which you didn’t want. Not only because you loved Suga and didn’t want to fight with him, but also because you knew he was right. The past days you had also worked until late into the night and the next morning been baffled by the nonsense you had fabricated. Maybe agreeing to staying over at his place had been your subconscious self-protection mechanism, knowing he would get you to go to sleep at a semi-responsible time at least once.
“Why do you always get upset with me,” you pouted and rolled your head back. The world spun for a moment, a mixture of the strange position your head had been in and the sleep deprivation.
“Sorry,” Suga sounded sheepish. “I just hate to see you neglecting your health like that. I didn’t mean to come across like I’m angry. Just worried.”
You stood up and stepped around the chair, wrapping your arms around Suga’s middle, nuzzling your face against his neck. He was still warm from bed, where he had fallen asleep while you had been punching out page after page on your keyboard. He also smelled like bed, warm and sweet and musky. Like home. You sighed, suddenly feeling your legs getting tired and your eyelids growing heavy.
Suga’s arms came around you as he pulled you a little closer to him, a soft chuckle shaking his body as he twisted his head to press a kiss to your hair.
“Someone sleepy,” he teased softly, tightening his arms further around you and lifting you a few inches into the air, walking to his bed.
“That’s your fault,” you mumbled, letting him push you down on the matrass. You could tell where he had been lying, the fabric of the pillow still warm.
Maybe Suga had been right. You had been so focused on making progress with your thesis, that you hadn’t even noticed how the world beyond the screen had started spinning from your exhaustion, how your body had sunk more and more in on itself from a lack of energy.
Through half open eyes you watched as Suga walked back to the desk to turn off the lamp, and then, in the dim twilight of the fairy lights, fetched a bottle of water from the kitchen.
“Here,” walking back to the bed, he unscrewed the bottle and handed it to you. “You should drink something before bed, at least a few sips. I bet you haven’t had any water in hours.”
Again, he was right. Damn, why did he know you so well?
Obediently you sat up and drank. The water was room temperature, so not cold enough to wake you back up but refreshing anyway. When you had enough, you handed the bottle back to him and sunk down into the pillow, closing your eyes. He walked around the room for a few more moments, probably putting away the bottle, maybe clearing something else away, and then joined you in bed.
Tucking at the blanket, he got you to push your feet underneath it before he spread it out over the two of you. With closed eyes you felt for him and scooted closer against his side, throwing your arm over his chest as he pulled you in.
“You need to promise me to take better care of yourself,” he whispered, his words muffled against your hair. “Education isn’t a sprint; it’s not even a marathon. It’s a long-distance hike. You constantly need to look out for yourself, or you won’t make it to your destination.”
There was a soft worry swinging in his words, but his annoyance from before was gone. You only hummed in acknowledgment of his words, only half processing what he was saying. Your brain felt like a grey mousse, unable to retain any information for the time being.
“I’ll make you breakfast tomorrow, okay,” Suga continued, and even though you were half asleep, you could tell he wasn’t off much better. “And I’ll make you iced matcha latte, I know you like that right?” His words faded out of your consciousness as you let yourself slip off into sleep, wrapped in his warm, familiar embrace. The last thing you thought was that you should probably spend more nights at his place, just to be engulfed by his soft voice. Then you had fallen asleep.
