Record of the Ashen Blades - Entry I
Amidst the rubble of barricades and fortifications long abandoned and rotten you may find it - the corpse of a thin, wiry man with spectacles, his gaze forever locked in a rictus of horror. Undead, but so far gone that his mind is a blank haze of forgotten memories - not even a Hollow, now. In his hands, preserved by whatever phenomenon preserves the Undead, is something surprising - a leather-bound journal, its covers reinforced with wood and bound in a fashion that brings more to mind a monastery than a printing press. A book made to last.
While its cover is blank, the interior page has a message scrawled upon it in harsh, broken letters - the ink is dark, whatever it may be composed of. It says this.
"We are not alone in the Dark. By God! I wish we were!”
It continues, then - in another hand, and another voice, written long before the haphazard scrawl…

Alva the Wayfarer, Dark Souls II Design Works
{/Who was this man? And why did he feel it necessary to speak to her? Didn’t stranger danger mean anything to these people anymore?}
"…There’s a difference between leisure, an’ simply havin’ nothin’ ta do. Is i’ leisure when yer trapped in a bland, gray room, no windows, no nuffin’. Nuffin’ ta do period. Is tha’ leisure?"
"Ah, so this land and your being are naught but delusions from the solace induced by the Hypotheticube?" The voice of his father came to mind as his sharpened gaze turned to a dull, deadpan stare. Young people... They're damned fools. "It seems I have finally become self aware. I pray for a swift emancipation from this Hell."
"Does anyone else feel tha impendin’ death from boredom? Is i’ like….possible ta die from havin’ nuffin’ ta do?"
The king gives the girl a stern glance from beneath his false countenance. "Having nothing to do is a leisure. Do not take it for granted, for the coming days may eat away at you more than you should like."

do you have a pet dragon?
"Are you sure you are not confusing the words dragon and drake, grey one?" The king crossed his arms, ringing tone taking the informed cadence of a teacher. "It has been ages since anyone has seen a true dragon. Tales of yore say they were immortal creatures who ruled over an unformed land of grey crags and archtrees, though I cannot affirm the candor of such legends. Drakes, however..."
Though one can't see it, one can almost feel the king's expression turn sour. "Drakes are the pestilence of the sky, worse than any locust or mite. In their wake, man and earth turn to ash, scattering in bitter winds. I suppose we are lucky that Vendrick's brother has them under some kind of reign, but..."
I do not trust Aldia.
"...Nevermind. 'Tis of little consequence. In any case, no, grey one, there are no dragons under my command."
All he receives is a blank, confused stare in return.
"...What? Did you think I was without humor?"
“I return from frozen lands to find this one overrun by beasts.”
A beat.
“Well, more so than usual…”
"One might say 'tis the nature of the beast."
Weiss pantomimes a rimshot.
[Friendly reminder that knights were typically nobles (and other highborns) and were expected to dress accordingly.
Meaning at some point in the lives of all of these people, someone had to sit them down and teach them the wonders of
FASHION.]
"I would rather burn than stuff my men and women in frills and cuffs."
"It hurts a bit now, but I’ll get over it,"
The king nodded down to the young man, the shining countenance upon his helm yielding naught but stoicism, though his tone rung sincerely enough. "In any case, apologies; 'tis by mishap, not transgression, that my trodden path went across your toes." He hums an amused chord, recalling his stature before he conquered the ground that would become Eleum Loyce. "I suppose I'll never quite get used to my size."

"That was my foot you stepped on,"
"...Are you injured?"
Rats in Dark Souls drop humanity. Rats have humanity, while humans are losing it.
The Rat King makes sense, now. No wonder he gained sentience.
Maybe the Furtive Pygmy also had a pet rat? That’d explain how all the rats drop humanity too. XD
((I think the rats gained that humanity by eating undead.
Although come to think of it, eating undead must not be very pleasant. They probably wake up in your stomach and punch their way out.))
Rats eating undead could explain their sudden sentience in DkS2 and possible sentience in DkS1, considering they totally ambush the fuck out of you sometimes. Might be a neat little headcanon to slap on a ratbro blog.
