Fast Fauna Facts - Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)

Family: Petrel Family (Procellariidae)

IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern

Like its larger cousins the albatrosses the Northern Fulmar spends much of its life out at sea in northern Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans, coming to land in order to breed. Members of this species are so adapted to life away from land that while easily capable of using their large, webbed feet to paddle along the ocean's surface or dive short distances in search of prey their legs are not strong enough to support their weight, forcing them to constantly sit or awkwardly shuffle around while nesting. While nomadic throughout most of the year Northern Fulmars always return to their home colony in the late spring in order to breed (with colonies being scattered around coastal regions of northern Asia, Europe and North America,) and re-unite with the same mate year-after-year to raise a single chick in a simple ditch-like nest. Both sexes work to incubate their egg and feed and protect their chick, and if threatened while on the nest both adults and chicks are able to spew a thick, sticky, foul-smelling oil to panic and ward off predators (adults will also spit a similar oil, derived from the fish, squids and free-swimming crustaceans they catch from near the oceans surface, into the mouths of their chicks in order to feed them.) Northern Fulmars develop slowly (reaching maturity at around 8-12 years old,) and are among the longest lived of all known birds, potentially surviving for over 50 years.

‘We genuinely have too many potatoes, I cannot stress enough’: 42,000 pounds of free taters headed to Denver

Twenty-one tons of potatoes are up for grabs at Potato Palooza on Monday.

The nonprofit’s set to receive a donation of 21 tons of tubers this weekend from suppliers in the Midwest. Hoping to get the starchy vegetables to people in need, the nonprofit will host a “Potato Palooza” event on Monday in Park Hill. “Anyone is welcome to come. They can bring tote bags, wagons, you could back up your pickup truck if you wanted to,” Hissong said. The event is 9 a.m. to noon at the Park Hill Food Recovery Hub, 6090 East 39th Avenue, on July 27.

We woke up and our stomach hurts and I don't know if we need to eat something or not? This last week has done such a number on us and our ability to read our body's signals apparently. 💔

I'm in a little local cafe and the women behind the counter started griping to each other, "Oh Christ, Stephen's back again," "It's him, is it? I thought he'd stopped coming," "It's definitely him, look, it's bloody Stephen on a Thursday morning," "Do you want me to get rid of him or are you going to do it?" and so I was peering outside, trying to spot this nightmare customer, this pestilence of a person, this pox upon the cafe trade, and then one of the women from behind the counter ran outside, clapping two trays together loudly and yelling "GET OUT OF IT, STEPHEN!" and it turns out that Stephen is an absolutely gigantic fuck-off seagull who hangs around outside, menacing people for crumbs

* He doesn't even have any of these pages made already. He's making the next one as we're doing the last one, and we're finishing faster than he can make them.

* He insists on walking us through each page before he gives it to us to do.

* Jae has decided he wants a baby dragon of his own too. He will be named Mambo, he says, and will be light green.

* We are fighting the urge to just break down in tears and I don't know why. Tired? Stressed? I don't know but it's awful and I don't like this.

* Oh, and apparently some of these computers are still using WORD FROM 1997???? SOMEHOW????
