katniss: everyoneâs so focused on protecting peeta because they too know how pure hearted he is and believe that heâa boy theyâve never even met beforeâdeserves to survive over them and their friends of literal decades
finnick, to literally everyone else: okay if peeta dies sheâs gonna kill all of us and then herself, so hands in, protect bread boy on three-

in light of the new book - it annoys me when people talk about the victors of district 12 and talk about lucy gray (the mockingbird, the entertainer (where the other 3 tried to stop the games she actually kept them going by introducing the entertainment factor in her efforts to survive), rigged reaping) and haymitch (the jabberjay, the flintstriker, forced into the games) and katniss (the girl on fire, the mockingjay, volunteered for love) but leave out PEETA. the boy with the bread, the dandelion in the spring, the one who is genuinely reaped and had the most chance of surviving and actually DID have the odds in his favour and yet still was made to join the games. where lucy gray and haymitch and katniss were the rebellion and the rising up of the districts - peeta is the hope for the after. he is the hope for what it takes to survive. the kindness of humanity, that we do good things purely for the rightness of those acts. dont get me wrong, he is rebellion. he can be a calculating game maker in the face of the odds moreso than haymitch or katniss or lucy gray ever was in their somewhat mostly incidental large acts of rebellion. his acts of rebellion were calculated precisely, again, in view of the future. he pushed the star struck lovers act with katniss in calculation that it would push HER in favour where she could not get it herself. so that she could have sponsors and and audience that loved her and the spotlight so that she could win and survive the games. he helped her in the 74th hunger games purely because it was right and kind and the quasi-formed love for her that he could have had for just about any other district partner he could have had - whether if it was prim or whoever. (where his love was also a crush on the surface, i believe that at the start at least, it was mostly out of goodness that he wouldve had in any odds) - peeta would have been wyatt callow again, sacrificing himself immediately for a 12 year old primrose everdeen in the bloodbath of the arena. because that is just who he is. he is goodness and the hope for a future
so, dont discredit him too fast in your pool of district 12 victors.
Obviously the book interpretation is entirely up to the reader, but I like to think that Lucy Gray's grave is empty. Not because she isn't dead. Not because she lives either. But because the whole point of her character after Snow finally cracks is to haunt the narrative, and the most interesting, compelling way she can do that is both for him and for us to never truly know what happens to her afterwards. She's SchrĂśdinger's cat. She's a ghost that lives every time someone replaces the Capitol silence with music. We don't even know if the Covey ever found her. The only thing I choose to believe, whether they did or not, is that that grave is empty.
Lucy Gray doesn't belong in the ground. She is the air, the trees, a whisper behind your ear. She is insanity for the cruel and strength for the defiant. She is hope; not a grain of it, not in small doses, not the tool Coriolanus means it to be. He tried to squash it, but Lucy Gray became intangible. Like a song, she escaped his control, and she became infinite.
-Yet some maintain that to this day
She is a living child;
That you may see sweet Lucy Gray
Upon the lonesome wild.
going back through mockingjay and what do you MEAN clerk carmine is most likely the fiddler at annie and finnick's wedding, what do you MEAN clerk who was the one to bring lucy gray the katniss just before things fell apart and the one to raise the girl who became haymitch's reason for living what do you MEAN clerk got to see his sister and his niece's dreams come true as the hunger games are destroyed by a girl with lucy gray's fire and lenore dove's heart what do you MEAN clerk saw the arrows his friend made be part of the downfall of the capital what do you MEAN clerk lost his family but saw them live on in haymitch and katniss and peeta
Covey Girls in the Meadow
snowâs âI hate mockingjays because they exist despite the capitolâs intentâ and maysileeâs âI hate mockingjays because theyâre part mutt and I dont want anything that has to do with the capitolâ and haymichâs âI think theyâre resilient and stand for surviving against all oddsâ and katnissâs âmockingjays remind me of my father and the other district 12 tributes before me and though they mean resistance to others, nobody can take that away from meâ which brings us back to lucy grayâs ânothing you can take from me was ever worth keepingâ
Thinking about tbosas from the other perspective is so funny to me because imagine youâre Lucy Gray and the way you make a living is by singing and being a charming, charismatic performer. The people in your district love you, you have a nice family, sure your parents are dead but things arenât so bad.
Then you get Reaped because your boyfriend cheated on you - so now you have to fight for your life in an arena.
When you get to the Capitol youâre met by a guy around your age who says his job is to take care of you in the arena, so you figure you should probably use some of those charms you live by on him so you have a better chance at survival. So you flirt with him a little, save his life etc. It works! He helps you! Now youâve won the Hunger Games! You get to go home and see your family! Thank you random Capitol guy for your help, bye bye now.
And then youâre singing on stage, with your family who you literally killed people to see again, thrilled to be alive and this fuckin Capitol guy has followed you home.
Oh and also heâs a peacekeeper now so is legally allowed a gun.
And now he kind of wonât leave you alone - the charm worked too well and heâs obsessed with you. Brilliant. But youâre a survivor. So you let him get closer, just enough to feel safe. And as you get to know him better, maybe youâre thinking, hey this guy isnât so bad, heâs kind of cute with his buzzcut and he seems to really like you, maybe this could be something. Also it might be useful to have a peacekeeper on side - everything in your district is about survival.
Things are going well, you write a song about him, he cries, your little cousin loves him.
And then he murders someone in front of you and youâre like oh shit he crazy. And THEN you realise that because of the person he murdered, the mayor is now out for your blood and youâre probably gonna die so you have to get out of there ASAP so you say bye to this guy and he INVITES HIMSELF TO YOUR ESCAPE PLAN and you have to be like âoh sure, thatâs super news, would absolutely love to have you along with me, Iâm so glad you asked.â So now youâre stuck with him again.
And THEN youâre in the middle of escaping and he fuckin tells you heâs murdered an extra person you didnât know about and when you ask him who, he says his old self and now youâre thinking oh shit he CRAZY crazy. And THEN he finds the gun he used and you realise that if he destroys that evidence then youâre the only loose end and he has a kind of crazy look in his eye so youâre like, okay time to nip this in the bud, Iâm outta here gotta go pick some katniss. So you run away from him and THEN he follows you again and fuckin shoots at you so you run FASTER and now youâve disappeared and no one will ever find out what happened to you which drives him absolutely crazy for 60+ years.
Oh and also theyâre going to erase all footage of your Games so no one will remember you and heâs going to become a tyrannical dictator who has personal beef with three different sixteen year olds from your district over the years, all because you hurt his feelings one time.
so katniss was the narrator of her own story and now we know that haymitch will get that opportunity, as well. even peeta, rue, and prim (each of them being mockingjays in the own right) have their stories told through katniss, their fellow district citizen, somebody who truly knows and loves them.
but lucy grayâthe first mockingjay, the first district 12 victor, the tribute who changed the hunger games foreverâis the only mockingjay who doesnât get to tell her story. sheâs reduced to a side character in her oppressorâs rise to power. she was the mockingjay before the world was ready for her, before the âsunrise.â
and yes thatâs incredibly devastating, but itâs also fucking remarkable. they thought they buried her, but her music refuses to die. they tried to erase her, but her voice fuels the revolution. against all odds, lucy gray lives on.
the spark, the ignition, the fire â victors of district twelve
THE HUNGER GAMES: the ballad of songbirds and snakes, sunrise on the reaping and catching fire.
Lucy Gray should be proud to know she haunted that evil man every damn day of his fucking miserable life
