i love the classic dynamic of working class butches and academic femmes. but consider the reverse: refined, well-read sophisticated butches and femmes with jobs that demand just so so much from their manicured nails that they need a hand massage when they come home. the butch carding through pages of dry academic texts, musing about philosophy or critical theory, but craving something soft and pliant to keep their motivation to focus on track (or to ruin it alltogether). the femme juxtaposing their polished looks with motor oil or cooking grease or construction dust or ash from welding, exquisitely contrasting their delicateness with their moxie. i’m getting hot dad professor vibes and gritty, sexy, capable femininity 😍

Butch4bButch content is not only welcome, but HEAVILY encouraged!!! ButchFemme culture as a whole could not exist without Butch4Butch relationships, it's an incredibly important element of our culture + history and we want to see that reflected in this zine as much as possible!

I totally understand how the phrasing of "ButchFemme identities" could lead someone to assume that this zine is exclusively about ButchFemme relationships. But above all else, this zine is about butch and femme identities. And while the two go hand in hand, that does not mean all work must feature them together!

This means that we also encourage pieces that are more “self reflective” in nature, if that makes sense. You don’t have to write about past relationships, you don’t have to paint your partner. We want to see what these identities mean to YOU, regardless of whether or not somebody else is involved in your interpretation of it. 🤍

Like we don't notice the way you're vaguely lost or overwhelmed in all the girly girl spaces you get sent shopping, or your grateful smile when we offer to help. Like we don't see your hair: unfussy, practical, and neat, and imagine tangling our fingers in it. Like we don't see the way your cheeks lift as you smile under your mask (so conscientious of others) and daydream about scattering you with kisses. Even when you think you're plain, darling, we see you and adore you.

As a femme, it’s our job to be there with butches and make community with them. We should be uplifting them and listening to them as they do with us. It’s not femme at all to be butchphobic and put down butches or butchness. That is no requirement to date or even be attracted to butches but we do have to be kind to each other, protect each other, and be there for each other. Our identities and communities are intertwined in the best way. We share a rich and important history. Our identities should matter to each other even if we’re not dating. As femmes we should care about the safety of butches and do our best to aid them, or at least the bare minimum of being kind, respectful, and listening to their issues. Butches deserve better and we can most certainly give them that.
