okay what i mean is, you can’t say “the one-wish willow isn’t a monkey’s paw; it doesn’t corrupt the person’s wish – many people have had their wishes granted w no strings attached – bear’s wish was just fundamentally flawed” and then show the willow corrupting his wish. i’m not saying he doesn’t suck, or that wishing for someone to love you isn’t gross or a violation of their autonomy. obviously that’s all still true. but the core conceit of obsession just. doesn’t work.

“rich that’s the point: bear doesn’t understand the difference between ‘love’ and ‘romance’ – don’t you remember his conversation w nikki in the car?” yea ik what the point is supposed to be, but i’m saying that the willow wouldn’t know that. is it a mind reader? is it vibes based? i’m sure ian would’ve been happier if $1b appeared in his bank account, or if someone showed up w a check, but instead his one william dollars appeared in cash, falling through the roof.

like, bear didn’t ask for nikki to fall in love w him, or want to date him. I KNOW WHY HE DIDN’T DO THAT. he didn’t do that bc he doesn’t view love as something non-romantic. but love isn’t inherently romantic. this is something the other characters understand, so it’s not just, like, a blind spot barker has that we’re supposed to overlook as an audience.

“i want [person who cares about me but doesn’t have romantic feelings for me] to love me more than anyone in the world.” why does that turn into the plot of the movie. we don’t know enough about nikki to know how she loves other people. who was the person she previously loved the most. presumably she wasn’t killing people for them. my mom loves me more than she loves anyone else but we aren’t fucking. she’s my mom.

who tf is this movie even for. people who would go into the movie thinking bear is a piece of shit end the movie knowing bear was a piece of shit. people who are indifferent come out thinking wish!nikki was ~crazy,~ or, if they can recognize the harm bear has caused, would be completely incapable of seeing themselves in him, almost by design.

ironically, by purposely trying to make bear as “unsympathetic” as possible, he’s stripped of any qualities that might make him relatable, that might make this an effective lesson for “nice guys” regarding the perils of inceldom.

it’s completely fine to want to make a movie w flat characters that clearly only exist as plot devices/morality dispensers, but that’s not even really what’s going on here. ironically, obsession ended up as a movie where the most fleshed-out characters are the peripheral cast, indicating that this is a film that’s supposed to have well-rounded characters, but doesn’t, for some reason. our leads are robbed of any interiority, meaning i can’t be bothered to care about anything that happens to either of them.

i’ve been “real” nikki before. i’ve felt like wish!nikki. i’ve been bear. but if i hadn’t already identified these patterns of behavior within myself going into the film it wouldn’t have prompted any sort of self-examination. i’d just be at the oddities fair saying “fuck bear” to the pretty girls at my tent i wanted to impress w my big brain knowledge of feminism, showing off that i’m “one of the good ones.”

anyway. if you liked “real” nikki’s story watch lake mungo. if you liked wish!nikki watch may. if you wanted this movie to fucking say literally anything at all watch mullholland drive or the love witch, both of which do a significantly better job of pulling us into the writer/director’s unconventional view of the world w characters who intentionally don’t act all the way human while still being believable within the confines of the story.

honestly, this being released not only in the same year as but around the same time as the drama is so embarrassing. if you want a movie about a guy who’s too far up his own ass to realize his actions have consequences, and that actually gives a fuck about its female characters, watch that one.

a couple weekends back i went to an oddities market w a friend and one of the vendors was selling horror themes art prints and he had a drawing of the one wish willow so i turned to my friend and said "i just saw that the other day, it was pretty good" and the vendor went "yea! fuck bear!" and i've been trying to figure out why that interaction pissed me off so much but i think it's bc that's literally the only takeaway of the film. obsession is just another shallow "man bad" horror movie by just another man who's either incapable of or unwilling to examine his own misogyny
