My little sister, Haley, is my hero. She is 25 years old and she has Asperger’s Syndrome. When she was younger, doctors misdiagnosed her many times telling us she had ADHD, then Sensory Integration Disorder and then finally Aspergers but it was awful to watch her endure therapies and medications that did nothing for her. Throughout her life I have always felt like her protector in this world, but there were some things that I could not protect her from - classmates called her cruel names and were often unkind.

Haley is my hero because of the adversity she has faced and the attitude and outlook on life she has despite of it. Optimism is her default and she has an amazing spirit that I admire so much. She is every positive adjective I can think of and then some. Her sense of humor catches me off guard and makes me belly laugh until tears roll down my face. She loves animals and children and is the best auntie to our niece and nephew. But she also has very strong social anxiety and instead of getting out and talking to people, she would rather stay in her room and listen to music and watch YouTube videos.

In 2010, she found a band online called One Direction and, in them, she found something that brought an immense amount of joy into her life. When they first came to the states, she asked me to watch them on the Today show with her and I remember seeing the biggest smile on her face. She was bouncing up and down and grinning from ear to ear as she watched them perform. From that moment on, those five (now four) boys were something that we could really bond over - Haley gets so excited when something new happens for One Direction and immediately wants to tell me all about it. I’ve downloaded their songs so we can listen to them in the car together and I try to stay up on news about them so that we can talk about it together.

With her Asperger’s Syndrome comes a great sensitivity to clothing. Even at a very young age, she would cry and scream if there were tags or seams in her clothing that irritated her skin and had to wear her socks inside out so that the seams were on the outside. I found a brand of t-shirt that she likes and can wear comfortably, printed One Direction designs on them, and she wears them almost every day.

A few days ago we were immensely lucky to get tickets to see 1D on Ellen on November 17th. Haley and I will be flying to LA from Seattle for the show and it would be more than I can imagine if she could meet Niall, Louis, Liam and Harry.  It would be the greatest joy of her entire life to be able to meet the boys.
