after multiple (countless) rewatches of the already life-changing “if I have to choose between saving you or saving Olympus” scene, i have one thing to say.

careful observation leads me to believe that Percy says, “I burn it all down,” not “I’d burn it all down.” a small change, but, frankly, it’s implications make me weak at the knees.

to be a grammar nerd for a second: “I would” is in subjunctive mood. basically, it’s used to describe hypothetical, often wishful ideas or thoughts. a future that may never come to pass. Percy saying, “[I would] burn it all down,” does imply that he’s already made his decision about the hypothetical future, but can’t escape the nature of the subjunctive. he's still worried about the potentiality.

the small change from, “I’d burn it all down,” to “I burn it all down,” wipes any hypotheticals off the board. it’s no longer an if-then scenario. in Annabeth vs Olympus, Percy’s response is certain, solid, and fully present (tense). he's not hesitating. for him, this is the only, logical, obvious reaction. I burn it all down. I burn it all down. I burn it all down.

i’m honestly so shocked that rick hasn’t written percy being cornered in a water treatment plant and using untreated poop water to attack monsters

i might be signing my death warrant by saying this, but just because annabeth is strong doesn’t mean percy is weak. annabeth was a lot more skilled in combat than percy when he first arrived at camp because he hadn’t had any training yet, whereas annabeth already had five years of training. but percy got better at fighting over time. he and annabeth are a battle couple and neither of them is significantly stronger than the other to the point that they would be helpless without them. reducing percy to just annabeth’s dumbass boyfriend doesn’t make annabeth look smarter. they’re both smart, just in different ways. annabeth calls percy “seaweed brain” as a lighthearted joke, she doesn’t legitimately think he’s stupid. annabeth canonically thinks of percy as the bravest person she knows. percy’s very good at coming up with battle strategies on the spot, he just doesn’t think through how dangerous they are and impulsively does them. all that saying percy would be lost without annabeth does for annabeth’s character is strip her of her complexity and reduce her to just a Strong Female Character. annabeth has more depth than that. she ran away from home when she was 7 years old, meaning she had to become strong and self-reliant at an age where she should not have needed to be. i would never deny that annabeth is very strong, smart, and powerful because she is, but letting her be flawed and emotionally vulnerable and sometimes rely on others for support doesn’t change that.

tl;dr: the percabeth where annabeth is the #girlboss One With The Braincell and percy is just her Idiot Boyfriend is fanon and reductive to both their characters.

Canon Percy hates to feel useless, he hates to feel like he is just tagging along without being helpful or is just dragging people behind because he can't keep up. That's why he is always doing crazily insane plans because he knows that if they work, he will have kept up his end of the fight and the one time he told his plan, Bianca did it and ended up dead so now he always does it himself to make sure that if it fails it's his fault he is dead and nobody else's blood is on his hands.

imagine being someone at new rome university and not knowing percy is the same guy as “percy jackson, son of poseidon, two-time hero of olympus, former praetor” because the thought doesn’t even cross your mind. like… he’s percy. he’s a total frat boy. on a normal night, he walks into a party, refers to everyone as bro or dude, socializes with every living (and not-living) person in the room, makes at least 50 sarcastic comments, plays 12 rounds of beer pong, drinks way too much, and then skates around campus on his skateboard yelling “I LOVE NEW YORK” (which makes no sense, because they’re in california) until someone calls his girlfriend to come get him.

and then one day there’s an attack, and frat boy percy is all of a sudden a fighting machine. he’s yelling battle cries alongside the praetors frank zhang and hazel levesque as they lead everyone into battle. (why is he with the praetors? and why…. why in the world do the praetors seem to be following his lead?) his sword slashes through armies of monsters faster than you’ve ever seen. he’s controlling the entire river surrounding the camp, creating huge waves as tall as skyscrapers that crash down all around him, wiping out monsters and causing mass destruction to his enemies’ ranks. the sky is suddenly dark above you, ice-cold water droplets are slashing through the air, and the wind is blowing so aggressively that it’s making it hard to stand up steadily. because he’s somehow created a hurricane.

and he looks terrifying. you can feel the power radiating off of him. he’s like a god. or maybe a monster. it’s hard to tell. you’re a little scared of him, to be honest. but also in total awe, because it’s extraordinary. he’s extraordinary.

It was a rewritten version of that funny feeling and by blakeyrouse and it was so special to me. at one point i knew that version better than bo’s original. i tried to find it myself after it disappeared from my saved videos in tiktok but i’m resorting to this. most memorable lines for me were
