January 25, 2002 - The Mothman Prophecies is released in the US.
The supernatural horror/thriller film is based on parapsychologist and Fortean author John Keel’s 1975 book of the same name. It was written by Richard Hatem and directed by Mark Pellington. It starred Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Will Patton, Debra Messing, Lucinda Jenney and Alan Bates.
The film is based on events and sightings that occurred in Point Pleasant, West Virginia between November 1966 and December 1967 as told by Keel in his book. On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed, which resulted in 46 deaths. Some connected the bridge collapse to the Mothman sightings and while the film falsely claims that the cause of the collapse was never explained, it was determined in 1971 that it was caused by the failure of an eye-bar in a suspension chain.
