Time

This week has been a busy one, I have been to the movies, gone out for a drink and went out for lunch. Instead of worrying about the cost of this wonderful excursions I have enjoyed and indulged. Spending less on material items and more on adventures has changed my outlook.

It’s Hard

I sent my husband to buy new school shoes for Miss 5 today because I just didn’t trust myself at the shops....

Broken

Master 3 thought it would be a good idea to draw with pen on my misfit flash and it would not work after that! My first thought was to throw it in the bin and buy another one, however I can’t do that! So I tried to scrub the pen off with a magic eraser, I also watched a tutorial on youtube to fix it and I have managed to get it working. Pen is still on it though.......

Imagination

Buying nothing new makes my imagination grow. Miss 5 and I are working on a fairy garden and instead of buying things, I borrowed a book from my library and we are making chairs out of sticks and thinking up ways to make mushrooms. Do I feel like we are missing out on anything? NO

Why

A few people have asked me why am I doing this and here is the main reason. To be mindful of the things that I purchase. It isn’t because I can’t afford to buy things it’s because I don’t need anything, I have plenty of Clothes, Jewellery, DVD’s and a house full of stuff. It’s to really think about what I need and the truth is nothing that can be bought at a shop.

Sherlock

I love the TV Show Sherlock and was devastated that it was only available on Stan. However thinking outside the box and wanting to see my “friend” Benedict I had two options either get Stan for a month for free and remember to cancel my subscription or check out if my Library would be getting it in. Well I went with the wait and the Library, I love my local Library. Money saved $50 on something I will probably only watch once.

Shops!

I took Miss 5 and Master 3 to the movies today to see “Sing”. We enjoyed it, I didn’t realise that the shopping centre that was connected to the movies would be open as it is a public holiday today. I felt the urge to buy something crazy isn’t it I don’t need anything but I had all these thoughts running through my mind of new shoes a new dress and justifications as well. But I stayed strong bought a loaf of fresh sour dough bread and headed out.

January 1st

Well today is the first day of buying nothing new and so far so good. I have unsubscribed from any shop emails and have put up a no junk mail sign on my letterbox.

Free!

If you haven’t discovered your local library now is the time to check it out. It has DVD’s, books and so much more. Not only is it free but the items don’t clog up your home and instead you just hand them back when you have finished. Be honest how many times do you reread a book or watch again a DVD.  So make 2017 the year that you introduce yourself to your local library and the friendly library staff, I promise you won’t get shushed!

Next Year

After reading up about the compact (people that don’t buy stuff) I am going to do an experiment with my family and not buy anything new in 2017 except for food, medicine, gifts and consumables. I don’t think that buying things is such a bad thing, I think buying things without thinking is bad. The things that sneak into your trolley when you go to Target. Instead I am going to use my imagination and my borrowing skills and see how far I can make it this year.
