Y'know something i don't see people talk about in tadc is the flawed aspect of Ragatha being a "polyanna" (i love that word)
Her take on "Toxic positivity"
i'm not really gonna discuss the movie here so this is spoiler free :] (until where i cut it. Don't click "read more")
I think that Ragatha's flaw of being way too overly positive to the point where it's toxic was not well written. Tbh it comes off as everyone else being an asshole to a woman who is genuinely trying to be nice.
If you don't watch TADC under the lense of analysis or fan theories then everyone's disdain for Ragatha just comes out of nowhere.
Especially in a world where negative feelings and feeling hopeless and giving up completely results in metaphorical DEATH.
Yes i understand that its because they can never tell if she's being genuine or real bc it sounds fake but once again: Any feelings of being isolated or giving up RESULTS IN WHATEVER ABSTRACTION IS.
HEAR ME OUT
Personally, how i would write Ragatha's toxic positivity would be like this
For an example, lets give them all an adventure. I'll make one up for her: it's a softball horse race for her, but caine fucks it up and makes it way more dangerous.
Ragatha guides everyone through bc this is her bread and butter. All the while Kinger seems to be playing along as he and ragatha have the closest relationship.
Gangle is scared and is constantly on edge but Ragatha keeps her uplifted as much as possible. But when gangle realizes she genuinely can't do something here, Ragatha tells her to "Don't say that! You can do ANYTHING you put your mind to! Don't talk yourself down!" and gangle is like "No I-I genuinely can't do this"
Zooble is trying their best to stay out of this but Ragatha is thinking that Zooble feels excluded and is trying way too hard to find something for Zooble to do.
Jax keeps making things more difficult as the main instigator but Ragatha keeps uplifting him, making everyone else groan thinking she's just ennabling him.
Pomni is watching all of this go down and tries to tell ragatha to tone it down. and Ragatha listens! She wants to take everyone's suggestions seriously after all!!
All the while she's doing her best to keep everyone happy
But it all comes to ahead when they all feel like they can't keep going. Pomni tries to talk to her
"Ragatha we can't do this"
"Yes you can! We can do anything"
"No no- We genuinely don't feel safe doing this"
"BUT YOU WILL FEEL SAFE!! I'LL MAKE SURE! I CAN DO IT- WE CAN DO IT!"
"NO."
David from Camp Camp is a good example of what i'm trying to convey (ignore season 5)
someone who is so obsessed with the idea of lifting up others that they not only ignore themselves but ignore the others. Ragatha will make sure they are uplifted and safe! She can do this! She won't break! She'll make sure this is a good experience! It has to be!
She'll prove that she is likable and a positive person to know! Her mother was wrong, people will like her! She's gotta just take the punches and criticisms and change herself completely based on what everyone says!
The episode would end with the kinger and ragatha conversation in the gun episode. and then, with help from pomni (and the others) they all get out of this by forfeiting the game,
Showing ragatha that its okay to fail and bail.
(MOVIE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT NOW)
This ending foreshadows the end where they say that its okay to fail and stay in the circus and that things are okay as they are.
It also foreshadows Ragatha's irl counterpart susie cutting her mom off completely
dont imagine william channeling lui and norah and isaac every time he has to come up with a plan in prime defenders, because he’s used to it being HIM who runs into deadly situations without a plan.
Now the roles are reversed and william has to make the plans , because vyncent and dakota sure as hell arent going to. dont think about how william was never the rational one, he was just the one who knew the consequences of diving in head first, because he’d lived through them first hand, and he cant bear to risk making the same mistakes twice
i had a dream last night that the third episode of empty graves came out and i was watching condi and grizzly doing a bunch of investigation half-in and half-out of character (something about bowls for the blood of the sacrifice which were as far as I could tell just normal pyrex bowls with a vague sense of evil?) and suddenly condi, out of nowhere, cut off isaac’s dialogue and said, “isaac stops talking for a moment and then—he doesn’t look at you when he says this, lui, but isaac says ‘I need to tell you something. I think—if I had died in that ritual without saying it I think it would be my biggest regret, so I have to say it now—Lui, I think I might want to be a girl.’” And I remember charlie yelling “WHAT” but you couldn’t even hear it because Milo was screaming so loud in joy and grizzly was trying so hard to not lose his grip on the roleplay of it all but he was so clearly delighted.
and then the dream cut off early because I got so incredibly excited by this development that I woke up and was immediately reminded that 2.3 is not, in fact, out yet, and neither is isaac
Mentally I keep coming back to Runt episode 26 because damn. This kid gives Thanatos a run for his money in terms of being the most metal jrwi character to ever do it
- Pushes her body to the point of shutdown
- Stares death in the face. Gets really goddamn close to biting it
- Wakes up covered in her own gore. The first words out of her mouth are getting her bearings and the second, despite being in immense pain, are an effort to get a handle on the situation
- Cries a little. Who wouldn’t. Jesus christ
- Then locks in maybe harder than anyone ever has. Cracks a physics problem the brightest minds of her generation haven’t been able to conquer? Mortal terror and agony be damned?? Right then and there???
- Tops it off with another completely novel prototype. Light work for Runt Wonderlust
- Uses her new scientific breakthrough(s) to perform surgery. On HERSELF. A surgery in which a sub-centimeter miscalculation would instantly perforate her heart
- Kills that shit to the most extreme degree. Cures her chronic illness
- Almost immediately walks outside, climbs into a commandeered mech of her own making and fucks shit up
If it weren’t for Runt’s solid commitment to being an all around decent human being this child would scare me more than Troy does. Actual force of nature
ugh another set of armour that I just LOVE and I'm so happy I thought of an idea for it. this is all I wanted in the canon ending!! *screams at sky* okay I am calm...
