" ย ย until very recently too, if it weren't clear from the slightly gravelly voice and foggy glaze still not quite cleared from his eyes. the phone in question had also been at all of five percent by the time he'd made it back to his apartment after his shift and then he'd neglected to plug it in before collapsing into his bed โ not that MUCH could've woken him from his slumber at that point ; there was no better ingredient for a good nightโs sleep than exhaustion.ย oh well, if rafael was't already aware and understanding of his SPORADIC texting habits, then this friendship was headed for a dead end faster than it even started. a hand rests on the door jam as he frowns up at rafael, his still waking brain finally piecing together the clues in front of him, ย ย " โ are you DRUNK ?? "
ย ย ย ย ย ryanโs on hour SIXTEEN of his TWENTY-FOUR off, nicely recharged with a rare heavy nightโs rest and a couple strong & sweet cups of coffee from the cafe down the street in him. so refreshed that he even takes the stairs up to the sixth floor ; little extra EFFORT never hurt anyone ( well, he knows better than anyone that isnโt quite true, but the sentiment is nice ). thereโs someone camped out in front of one of the doors on the sixth floor hall when he finally reaches it, not his but one next to his, he realizes as he gets closer. her face isnโt as familiar as her VOICE, but he recognizes her readily enough, just barely containing an eyeroll as he comes to a halt outside his own apartment. he balances his cup of coffee in one hand, pulls his keys from his pocket with a jangle with the other. it takes a little wiggling of the doorknob to get the lock to turn before his gaze lands on the other.ย ย ย โ โ locked outย ?? โย ย ย he asks finally, tone uncharacteristically unsympathetic, but he canโt quite find it in himself to compassionate toward the number twoย reason he never seemed to get enough sleep around here. ever.
ย ย ย ย ย โ um โ iโll take a small of the mint chip, please. โย ย ย ryan finally pulls his gaze away from the brightly colored ice cream to fumble open his wallet, the amount counted out PRECISELY given the number of times he frequents this place. itโs lessย about the ice cream ( adequate enough ) and more about EMOTIONAL states โ thereโs a reason ice cream gets called the break up food. not that ryan is broken up, at least no more than is usualย for these past couple months ; maybe thatโs why heโs here so often. he hands the cashier his money, a few coins dropping with a clatter from the pouch of his wallet he neglected to zip shut once more. a tired sigh escapes his lips. ย ย ย โ โ fuck. โย ย ย what was fifty cents in the long run anyway ??
ย ย ย ย ย itโs not that ryan doesnโt like plants ; itโs just that most days it feels like he can barely take care of himself let along remember some green non-sentient being thatโs ultimately going to DIE because he probably has whatever the opposite of a green thumb is. regardless, heโs finally fed up enoughย with his motherโs comments about his tragically EMPTY bedroom he skypes her from. the rest of the apartment is adequately decorated, but thatโs only because of his roommate and not any effort on his part. RIGHTย ). fingers toy with the familiar shape of his pendant around his neck as he surveys his plant options before him and realizes heโs got absolutely no clue. the pendent zips along its chain, a nervousย tick heโs picked up these past couple months,ย ย ย โ so โ which oneโs the EASIEST ?? โ
ย ย ย ย ย heโs EXHAUSTED and STARVING, boiling water on the stove to make pasta because itโs the easiest thing to make that doesnโt go in a microwave โ ryan has someย standards, okay. thoughts are already preoccupied on what itโll feel like to fall into his bed and sleep away another 24 hours shift just in time to go at it again, when the fire alarm goes off ; the irony is NOT lost on him as heโs shoving keys and his wallet into his pockets. itโs midday, so itโs not like there are a ton of people in the building, obvious as he pushes open the door and makes his way down the near empty stairwell. heโs not moving with all that much URGENCY, but thatโs just because heโs pretty sure someoneโs burned their toast again and not that the building is in danger of going up in flames. he peers over the railing, sighing at the sight of the distance he still has to descend,ย ย ย โ โ WHY did i decide to live on the top floor ?? โ

**tw death, accidents**
โ born and raised in CHICAGO. his mother was a surgeon, his father a lawyer so he had a pretty comfortable life growing up.
โ decided he wanted to be a paramedic when he was twelve and witnessed them in action saving his fatherโs life after a terrible car accident. his father went on to make a full recovery because of them and ryan knew from that moment thatโs what he was going to do.
โ after high school, he completed an EMT program at one of the local community colleges in chicago as well as firefighter training. he then shadowed for six months with the CFD before going on to complete the paramedic program at malcom x college.
โ at 21 he returned to the CFD to serve full-time. for two and a half years, it was an incredible experience and he felt like heโd truly found his place in the world and then tragedy struck.
โ he doesnโt really remember how it happened, how his best friend matthew became fatally injured saving someone else, all he knows is that in the end he couldnโt save him and that no one deserves to have someone they love die in their arms.
โ losing matthew hit ryan incredibly hard, shaking his confidence in the field and in himself. he took some time off before ultimately deciding he needed to get out of chicago.
โ two months ago ( mid-june 2020 ) a connection panned out and a spot opened up in one of the las vegas fire & rescue stations and ryan took it.

โ he watches the sun rise every day without fail. it reminds him to appreciate life and that every day is a gift because tomorrow is not always a given.
โ he wears a silver pendent necklace ( rectangular with dark diagonal striping ) that belonged to matthew. his family thought ryan would want it and now he rarely ever takes it off.
โ ryan is actually a talented writer, though few know it. he has a blog that is run under a psued that he updates sporadically.

โ since matthewโs death ( approx. 3 months ago ), ryan has become more withdrawn and private. heโs always taken to internalizing things as not to be a burden on anyone else, but especially now. he smiles less than he used to, and is still very much grieving. he went through grief counseling after matthewโs death but could currently probably use more therapy...
โ he has a kind heart and genuinely wants the best for people even if itโs not the best for himself. his tendency to trust people and always see the best in them has led to him getting his heart broken a few too many times, and yet it has not dampened his kindness.
โ extremely adaptable and thrives under pressure. it takes a lot to make him lose his temper or his cool.
โ heโs still working on trusting his instincts and finding his confidence again. not so deep down he still blames himself for losing matthew, and no matter how many lives he saves after him it feels too insignificant.

โ scars: too many to count, but most notably a scar on his jawline from a building rescue back in chicago
