Through the looking glass.
The sun beat down upon the Alienage; elves gathered by the tree in the middle. Others conversed at the market stalls. Gabriel watched them as he moved down the steps. He knew something about fighting to survive.
His rumination was stopped by the sound of a commotion. A scruffy elven child scurried down the steps past him. He was holding a loaf of bread. A rotund male was bounding after him screaming bloody murder. “I’ll have your head for this you filthy knife-ears!”
Hawke stepped out of the way to let the boy pass. When the man tried to squeeze past he casually stuck his foot out. The man was in too much of a hurry to notice. He tripped over the foot and lost his balance. The man stumbled and rolled down the steps, crashing into a couple of barrels.
By now, people were looking to see what had happened. Gabriel strolled into the Alienage as if nothing happened. He caught the elven child’s eye and winked. The boy gave a shy smile and scampered off to find his mother.
Hawke stopped outside of Merrill’s home and knocked. He leaned against the wall, observing the man pick himself while he waited for an answer.
Performing a public service.
As the sun dipped beneath the Chantry, the denizens of Hightown ambled back to their mansions or to the Blooming Rose for a night of privileged debauchery. The cover of night served to be the perfect time for thieves and vagabonds to prowl the streets. Setting yourself apart from the amateurs was the key to any successful caper — it was one of the first lessons Hawke had learned early on.
Although he’d got rich of the spoils from the Deep Roads Expedition there were some things gold and reputation couldn’t buy. In daylight he might have thrown on the clothes of a protector, disguised himself as a sheep among the flock of nobles. But in his heart Gabriel would ever remain a loveable scoundrel, a thief who’s thirst for adventure could never quite be sated.
He stole not for himself but for the people of Lowtown. For the cripples, the elves and children who couldn’t feed themselves. It was for the thrill of the moment that he chased.
His latest scheme had him casing the mansion of a wealthy Orlesian family who were fond of flaunting their riches for all to see. They wouldn’t miss a few golden trinkets here and there. Getting in and out was a two man job.Of all the people who could understand his motives he knew Isabela would come along for the ride.
Gabriel waited for her in the side street by the mansion. He dressed in light armour with his hood up.
You’re a failure, and your family died knowing it.
I keep every death with me. If you want that weight, be sure you’re ready to take it.

"Think of it as having character. That dust is your dust and has left its mark on the Alienage for better or worse." The rogue quipped with a wry smile. He never minded her rambling. It was endearing, part of a personality he’d grown accustomed to. He leaned against the door frame until she invited him in. "I can think of worst hosts than someone as pretty as yourself." Hawke took a seat at the table, drumming his fingers on the worn wood.
Complimenting her came as easily as breathing. He leaned back in the chair, finding nothing wrong with the decor. She lived in the Alienage so it wasn’t as if he expected an Orlesian mansion by any stretch of the imagination. Dropping by helped him keep out of sight of the legion of people wanting him to fix all their problems.
"Did that artefact do any good or was it just another way for the Keeper to extend her impressive guilt skills all the way to your home?" He didn’t pretend to know anything about Dalish items. But the arulin’holm had seemed important to her.
Merrill found herself giggling softly at his comments, a soft blush caressing her fair cheeks. Hawke was witty, and very sincere to Merrill. She knew that she could trust him with anything, including her life. ❝You’re so sweet, Hawke. Y’ always seem to know the right words to say. How do y’do it?❞ She asked, wishing that she could manage to say the right things. In her mind, she was always messing something up. But, what could she do? The best she could do really, is just keep trying. Maybe someday she’d get it right. Still, her own insecurities didn’t keep her from smiling. Especially since Hawke had been so sincere and so very helpful.
However, her lips formed into a small pout at the mention of the artifact. She shook her head. ❝The Mirror is still inactive. And… I’m not sure why that is. I feel nothing, and I see nothing in the refection. But… I think I may have an alternative to possibly make it work. Though, I may have to look into it more.❞
Of course it wasn't active. Hawke learned a long time ago that to expect things to go the way you wanted in Kirkwall was to give yourself a death wish. Better to assume it would all fall apart from the start. Part of why he could take such a care-free approach to most things. Life was about helping the people you cared about and finding any modicum of enjoyment.
"It's just my burden to bear unfortunately. But you being your usual adorable self helps." The Ferelden tilted his head with a half-smile. Gabriel wasn't sure how thrilled he would be to go digging through another cave for elven magic. But he figured he'd be dragged into something beyond his control again at some point.
"Well, when you find it let me know. In the mean time we should do something to celebrate…maybe a trip to the Hanged Man for drinks."

Hawke stopped outside of Merrill’s home and knocked. He leaned against the wall, observing the man pick himself while he waited for an answer.
Merrill sat in from of the mirror in silence. She kept her eyes fixed on it, admiring it. She tried to focus all her attention on the mirror, hoping that she’d see something. Or even feel something from it. It was hopeless however, due to the fact that it was missing something. The Eluvian had to be completed. And if there was one person that could possibly help her, it was Hawke.
It was normal for him to stop in and check on her, which is something she always looked forward to. After all, Merrill usually didn’t get very many visitors. Well, besides Isabela and Verric, and Aveline on occasion. She just hoped that Hawke would be understanding of her intentions. The Eluvian was the key to restoring lost knowledge, and saving her people.
Pretty soon though, her concentration was soon broken, due to a knock at her door. Rising to her feet, the young Dalish Elf dusted herself off, and made her way to the front door. Merrill pulled the door open, looking up to see Gabriel Hawke himself. Her lips tugged into a friendly smile at his sight. ❝Oh! Hello, Hawke.~❞ She mused in a chipper tone, before glancing back inside her house. She soon realized that her house was a bit dusty, making it look dirtier than it really was. ❝Elgar’nan… I knew I was forgetting to do something today. My house is always dirty when you come by. I told myself that I was going to tridy it up, in case you came. But, by the Dread Wolf… it didn’t happen.❞
Realizing that she was rambling, she shook her head a bit. ❝Oh, sorry, please come in! I’m sure y’d like to sit down. After I dust off a chair. Can I get you something to drink? I have… water. Still.❞ she sighed softly, her nervousness always getting the best of her. ❝Y’d think that after all this time, I’d be a better host.❞
