Birds of Prey #98
That one time when Yasemin Soze wanted to kill Helena and Misfit/Batgirl took a bullet for her. This is pretty much Helena and Charlie’s first meeting.

“It’s high school. The closest thing our society has to institutionalized torture."
Barbara signed Calgon, take me away, as she sighed in frustration. “It’s high school. Weren’t you having fun with the drama club?”
Barbara looked the exam over carefully. The class was not for students expecting to go into business or the sciences and therefore covered more basic, practical concepts. It seemed simple enough.
The longer she looked at the exam, the longer she felt that the questions themselves were flawed.Charlie was being asked to compare statements like doubling rates of gunshot deaths in children versus doubling rates of children killed by firearm violence. The question was marked as incorrect, as Charlie had indicated the statements were in not comparable as opposed to conflicting or consistent.
Shaking her head, Barbara said, “These questions are stupid. Who the hell wrote this test? At the very least you’re using your head and noting the difference in implied intent of the statements.”
The asker, she suspected, was not likely to be smart enough to realize the difference. As a math question, saying the rates doubled annually in one statement versus doubling over a twenty year period, Barbara was quite sure the answer they were looking for was “in conflict” as annual doubling is a lot greater jump over twenty years than a doubling of the initial annual numbers at the end of a twenty year period.
As Barbara worked her way through the exam, she found a number of other such questions which were stated in ways that left way too much room for interpretation. Giving Charlie half marks for those questionable wrong answers by the time the exam was over, she ended up with a score of 81%. Not likely to put her at the top of the class, but a low B was a heck of a lot nicer grade than a D+.
Charlie had worked so hard that it was painful to see her so disheartened by the poor grade. Barbara picked up her cell phone and dialed the school’s number. “Here’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to help you learn to frame your interpretation of the questions on the context. In other words, questions like this stupid one to be examined as a math question only rather than one directly comparing topics one might consider in civics.”
Pausing, Barbara’s finger came up to silence any possible comment from Charlie. “I want to talk to Mr. Jacobs in the Math Department. I expect an explanation from him on who exactly taught him to grade an exam. Yes, I’ll hold.”
As the dead air of the telephone transfer system rang in Barbara’s ear, she turned to Charlie and extended her right index finger. “You did better with this ridiculous test than your grade suggests.”
“Yes, Mr. Jacobs? I’m Charlie’s mother. Charlie Radcliffe. Yes, from your fourth period class. No, not Mrs. Radcliffe, please call me Ms. Gordon.”
“Where exactly did you get this exam? I want a meeting to discuss my daughter’s grade, and how you’re going to curve up the grades of those students who deserved part marks for this poorly worded crap on a cracker you call a test.”
Waiting tensely as the teacher explained the source of the question, Barbara shook her head. “Oh, no no. Look at question 19. There’s a clear implication of intent in that statement. Deaths versus killings? How could you not award even partial marks for recognizing the potential Charlie clearly explained in her answer?”
“I know this is not a Social Studies class, but does that mean you should be absolved from providing questions in clearly understandable English?” Barbara demanded. “I’m not arguing question 22, although now that you mention it it would not be a bad idea to encourage students to get all the information about the equivalency of statements. After all, it’s about relative impact of firearm violence and yet you reference those who’ve died in theaters of war over the last decade. How many were killed by IEDs? Died of malarial infection? Dysentery? And look at question 46. It’s not Charlie’s fault that you don’t understand that a Megabyte is, by definition 1024 kilobytes or that a Gig is 1024 Megs. Is it any wonder these kids are confused when they buy a 16 Gig device and find it only has 15.25 Gigs of actual space on it?”
After a moment of silence on Barbara’s side, she locked her jaw firmly in place and spat out, “Do you mean to tell me you’re just there to teach math and don’t give a damn about imparting critical thinking skills to your students? No wonder Gotham’s public school system is so far below that national average.”
Charlie perked as Babs looked at the test. “The questions are dumb!” she prompted. She didn’t understand it at all. First of all: why were they learning about deaths and gunshots and school shootings- those were not things to be involved in a math problem! And second of all, it was just so confusing. She didn’t understand the wording ant the problem.
And then Barbara picked up the phone, and her jaw dropped. “You aren’t-- oh you are!” Charlie whispered, her hands slapping over her mouth. Barbara was going to slay her school! Suddenly she was squirming where she stood, half in a panic and half in laughter. But she whispered. “Gage!” automatically. She hated it when they shortened her name to just Radcliffe, and it was more common than anyone though. Just Gage would be fine with her, but she absolutely refused to be called by the S.O.B’s name that ditched her.
But her jaw was dropping. She was slaying Mr. Jacobs on the phone! Sure, Charlie was having a little bit of trouble keeping up with Barbara as she was talking, but it sounded like that Barbara was flattening him.
No wonder Gotham’s public school system is so far below the national average!
“Babs!” Charlie squeaked automatically. Was that a private school threat. She couldn't go to private school she would absolutely, positively die. The uniforms and the preppy rich kids and she wouldn’t have Huntress-- Ms. B. she had to get used to that.-- as an English teacher. Charlie immediately went from silently cackling to silently flailing in Barbara’s general direction. The message was supposed to be NO PRIVATE SCHOOL but lord knows she looked more like a rabid duck.
And a poof appears in the monitor womb. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARBAAAAAAAAAARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!" Yes, there is glitter, a homemade card, and maybe even a little gift bought with her very own money.
Barbara was still brushing glitter off of herself. Piles and piles of pink, blue and purple glitter everywhere. She didn’t even see the gift until after Charlie had been done with her warbling.
“Charlie, you didn’t have to do this. You work too hard flipping those burgers to be spending it on me…”
She laughed. “Settle down. We have a month to go, and I don’t even start thinking of peanut butter balls until just before Thanksgiving. But fruitcake? That I’m starting this month so it can age properly.”
Charlie recoiled at the mention of fruit cake, and sign of appetite fell off her face. Her mother used to make this godawful fruitcake. “Babs... anything that has to age properly that isn’t cheese.... shouldn’t be a thing.”
Honestly I should just drop out of school and become an arkham security guard. I'll get paid for not doing shit #onlyingotham #seriouslywhatsthepoint

“With what we do, I think being a trouble magnet sort of goes in the job description.” He was always a bad kid, but trouble suddenly dominated his life again when he took up the cowl. “And I am so not touching the red hair thing. You can ask the Commish about it.”
He didn’t even realize that he had dropped the small spoiler already of Barbara’s fate. He didn’t even remember it. Barbara was usually just that; Commissioner Barbara Gordon, hardass and badass who just so happened to be Batgirl and Oracle.
“It’s weird. I mean there’s not a lot of mobs or organized crime. It’s there but nowhere near as bad as the old man made it out to be.” Glad to hear Charlie would be okay soon enough, he nodded. “No problem. It wasn’t like I was about to leave you for a bunch of dregs.”
“Try telling Babs that,” Charlie said, her tone slightly dry. While she wasn’t expected to be little goody two shoes (Babs had likely given up on that the second she meant Charlie), she was still expected to stay out of any real trouble and it was really really really hard.
“Commish? Oh, you mean Commish Gordon?” Charlie asked, “Babs’ dad, right? I’ve had lunch with him a few times, ya know with Babs. At like Christmas and stuff. He’s pretty cool, and I be he knows all aobut the trouble Babs gets into- he won’t tell me any of it. She won’t either. He also won’t tell me if he has to shampoo and conditioner his mustache.” She was rambling as she dusted off her clothes and made sure she still had everything that had been in her pokets.
“It’s pretty bad where I am,” she responded with a shake of her head. “Gang members and mobs and it’s hard to know who you can trust. It’s why people don’t really like Gotham City... I mean, I love Gotham, but it’s dangerous. Someone could hurt you or set a building on fire at any point and no one would really be surprised...” she trailed off, frowning at the thought. Gotham really was a city of crime. She glanced up at Terry and put a grin back on her face. “But I like Gotham. And that’s why Gotham has us to kick ass, right? ..... What’s a dreg? Like a hooligan? Thug?”

“Charlie, you didn’t have to do this. You work too hard flipping those burgers to be spending it on me…”
“Unless…” Barbara whispered, her eyes losing focus. She kept hoping that one day Dick might want to put the ring he’d offered her on a runway back on her finger, but came back to herself as she pushed the notion away. It was more than she dared hope and likely a push that he was already thinking about what she might give him for Christmas.
“Yeah, Christmas is a pretty odd choice, but he’s nuts for the holidays. All the presents, the baking…I swear, he can smell my peanut butter balls from halfway across town.”
“Unless what?” Charlie asked, her head tilting to the side. Really, she tried to stay out of Babs’ relationship with Dick. She had bounced in on way too many sexual encounters for her liking and she really didn’t like Dick. Well.... No that wasn’t quite right. She was sure he was a good guy, but he didn’t like her. The stupid jerkface.
But Charlie was immediately frothing at the mouth when Babs mentioned her peanutbutter balls. “They’re so good,” she exclaimed. “So so so so so so so good!!!”
“It’s high school. The closest thing our society has to institutionalized torture."
Barbara signed Calgon, take me away, as she sighed in frustration. “It’s high school. Weren’t you having fun with the drama club?”
Sighing, Barbara reached out with palm raised. “Hand over the test. Let’s see if we can figure out where you got into trouble.”
The girl had worked so hard, it hurt to see her so upset. Barbara, however, was a firm believer in diving into failures to figure out what went wrong and turning them into future wins.
Charlie glanced at Barbara and sighed, slumping over slightly as she swung her bag off her back and began to look for the folder that contained the stupid quiz. It was so unfair. How come she still had to fail when she tried so hard?
“It isn’t fair! And my math teacher is a royal cow! I didn’t even do anything to her this year!” she exclaimed, handing her the paper. The red 67 was circled up a the top and she swore it was glaring at her.

“If this is the kind of crowd you attract in just one day, I’m worried about the one back home.” Terry dodged out of the way of another of the Jokerz before decking him. The gang was running scared now. They had thought they were going to have some fun with this new girl; they didn’t.
“Guess you’re lucky then. The Jokerz are an issue here. We don’t have a lot of mob bosses like you did.” At least, what pre-costumed criminals Gotham. “We got the Jokerz, the Ts, the Animal Kingdom, the Crocs, and some other smaller gangs or punks. The Jokerz are the biggest here but there’s a lot of them all over the place.”
Terry knew Jokerz in Metropolis, the West coast and even some from across the pond. However it didn’t compare to the swarms of Jokerz in Gotham City. “You okay?”
Charlie rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. “Well, I mean.... I’m a magnet for trouble. At least, that’s what Babs says. I don’t mean to be, honest! Maybe it’s the hair. Nightwing says that red head’s always have a thing for trouble,” she mused, watching as the gang ran with their tail between their legs. Ha. Shows them who’s boss.
“Yeah, we’re kinda all mobby right now,” Charlie frowned slightly. Helena wouldn’t let her near the mob with a ten foot pole, even for surveillance, if she could help it. Then again, she was rarely allowed out on missions anyway, though that didn’t necessarily stop her from going anyway. “We have a lot of the henchman of the mobs that we fight. They’re all really dumb.” Charlie wrinkled her nose. “I was fighting some before I ended up here in this time...” And she had been losing. But that was besides the point.
She looked up at him before looking down at herself. She was sure her eye was half swollen from where she had gotten hit, and she was achy and bruisey all over. But still she nodded. “I’m okay!” Charlie grinned brightly. “Any injuries are gonna be gone in like two minutes. They’d heal right away if I could bounce, but I’m not in costume, so I’m not supposed to bounce... What about you? You okay? Thanks for jumping in and helping, dude.”
“YES. Now let’s just go already!”
Charlie huffed slightly. "Alright alright, keep your spandex on, I'm going!" Misfit disapepared from the spot and appeared a few hundred yards away. "C'MON WHO'S SLOW NOW!"
You work too hard flipping those burgers to be spending it on me…”
Raising her hand she said, “Charlie, I love it, and if you take it back I’ll be very disappointed. It really is very thoughtful.”
Even moreso given that she and Dick had collaborated on the gift. At least they were proving they could get along on occasion. Charlie was a non-negotiable part of Barbara’s life. This was indicative of progress.
“So what’s the initial combination?” Barbara asked. “Dick’s birthday? Or does he trust me to remember?”
Charlie immediately waved her hands in fornt of her. “No no no! Don’t be disappointed it’s staying right here!!! Honest!”
The girl had bullied Dick into helping her. She knew what she wanted to get Barbara, but she hadn’t known where the heck to even find one. And it was either Dick or bouncing into the Batcave to attempt to bully Batman into helping her out-- she had a feeling that wouldn’t have gone over as well as clinging to Dick’s leg and begging.
“Nope! It’s my birthday!” Charlie grinned. “Dick wanted to make it christmas, but who uses Christmas as a password? That’s just weird.”
