Saying Goodbye: The BAI Intern’s End of the Summer
A look at the Brooklyn Youth Chorus through the eyes of it’s newest interns- Deana and Monifa; keep reading for our final entry of BYC Through Us! (8/19 ENTRY #4)
As we walked into work, we knew that it was our last day; Today at BYC marked the end of 6 weeks. Coming into the building now, was much different than our first arrival. No longer were we intimidated by the staff or scared of the workload, we felt comfortable and welcomed. We’d grown familiar to the small, friendly community posted here at BYC!
This summer, Monifa and I had the privilege of working at Brooklyn Youth Chorus and it was in no way what we’d expected. If you’ve read our first entry, you’d know that we were nervous and unsure. But flash forward through this summer, and we fit into the system somehow. At BYC, I’d learned to utilize my personal hobbies of social media and HTML/CSS coding. I was able to improve my skills professionally, which would help me in the future. Monifa had a completely different route than mine, she learned to film and edit. Both were entirely new skills to her, yet she’d somehow used them in her own unique way. Both of us, had found our niche at BYC. We’d walked in, a bit unsure of what we had to offer, but it wasn’t long for us to grow into the roles we’d been given.
Our last week at BYC did consist of work, but we still got to socialize with the staff and watch the last week of summer camp! The staff had even been kind enough to buy us a celebratory cake, something we’d been very touched by and knew we’d been nostalgic over later. Walking out of BYC this week will be bittersweet. For sure we’ll come back, but knowing that our summer routine was over will be hard. We’ll have to shuffle back to our ordinary lives of school, and away from the easygoing nature we’d grown accustomed to. For a fact, Monifa and I both know that we’ll miss BYC. The 6 weeks had passed by so quickly, but we’d grown and learned so much from our experience. Today, we will walk out of BYC knowing that behind us is a very great place. But we’ll also know, that we definitely haven’t left.
