If Nathan were more logical, he would have written off the look as the usual passing glance in Blackwell’s hallways. Unfortunately, he was not. “Stop staring, freak, or I’ll make you.”

Max stared down the wreckage of Arcadia Bay, her expression stoic. A sinking emptiness filled her gut as she turned to look over at Chloe. Her mouth opened, a single, plaintive “what have I done” at the tip of her tongue. She swallowed back the words, silently reaching to curl her fingers around Chloe’s wrist. “Do you think there’s anyone left?” she whispered.

Elizabeth was perched at the edge of the curb, her wide gaze surveying the universe around her. Cars cruised up and down the streets, and people chattered among themselves as they passed by. They shot her odd looks as she passed, but she ignored their confused expressions, opting to wave at them instead.
“Excuse me, sir!” she piped up, reaching out to tap a passing man. “Could you help me for just a moment? Please?”

He’d been hunched in his usual booth at the Two Whales Diner, a half-eaten stack of waffles sitting in front of him, when Rachel walked in. Immediately, Nathan brightened, his stomach filling with butterflies that Arcadia Bay’s darling only ever seemed to elicit. “Hey, Rach,” he greeted, his head tilting attentively. “Weird seeing you without either of your lovers,” he continued mockingly. “Flying solo today?”

The moment he spotted Chloe, Nathan felt his muscles tense, his mind immediately urging for him to flee. She was putting up those damned posters again. He swallowed thickly, forcing his gaze away from Rachel’s unblinking stare and the word ‘missing’ in bold, large print across the top of the sheet. His face contorted into a look of annoyance, he sneered at the blue-haired girl, “Holy shit, Price. Give it up. Girlfriend’s not coming home. She skipped town without your ass.”

He breathes out a sigh of frustration, fingers fumbling with the buttons on his camera. It seems he can never quite get his aperture right. Squinting against the sunlight, he watches as Laura lines up a shot, somewhat perturbed by the ease with which she goes about her own photography. He bites back the complaint that rests just on the tip of his tongue. Instead, he opts to approach her silently, watching and waiting until she’s finished.
“What are your aperture settings on?” he grumbles, pointedly avoiding her gaze.
