joelle  should  have  expected  if  anyone  could  find  her  hidden  in  the  storage  room  of  the  hard  deck  it  would  be  mav,  because  if  there's  anyone  who  knew  her  the  way  her  dad  did  ..  it  would  be  well  her  other  dad  ..  there's  a  soft  rap  of  knuckles  against  the  door  before  it  swings  open  slightly,  a  familiar  face  peeking  in,  a  quiet  call  of, 

“  elle  ?  you  in  here,  kid  ?  ” 

she  manages  a  soft  affirmative,  shuffling  back  just  enough  mav  could  step  inside  the  storage  room,  “  i'm  fine,  mav  ..  promise.  "

a  sharp  cry  of  kate's  name  shakes  the  darkness  around  her  as  she  startles  violently  to  a  sitting  up  position,  barely  stopping  herself  from  tumbling  over  as  she  plants  her  trembling  hands  on  either  side  of  her.  she'd  fallen  asleep  after  the  long  few  days  of  traveling  they'd  had  finally  reaching  a  motel  with  its  signature  too-thin  walls  and  lack  of  accessibility  options,  only  to  be  jarred  awake,  kate's  name  on  her  tongue  and  graveyard  dirt  in  her  mouth. 

“  addy  ?  ” 

there's  a  knock  at  her  door,  tyler's  voice  calling  out  to  her  and  she  feels  panic  settle  into  her  chest  because  those  thin  too  walls  might  have  just  betrayed  her.  with  trembling  hands  she  reaches  for  her  prostethtic,  puts  it  on,  wincing  at  the  phantom  ache  that  travels  through  her  as  her  pajama  pants  fall  to  cover  it  and  she  stands,  wobbling  for  a  moment  before  crossing  the  small  distance  to  the  door,  swinging  it  open  to  reveal  tyler,  “  did  you  need  something,  tyler  ?  "
