the more you dig into the visual language of this show, the more it becomes infuriatingly clear that byler wasn’t just a possibility, it was the emotional architecture holding half the story up. and that’s why the “it was never endgame” argument makes me want to scream.

the matching socks in the flashback aren’t just symbolism. they’re not even just foreshadowing. they’re structural groundwork. identical stripe pattern, inverted colours, blue and yellow functioning as a relational dyad, that’s the kind of motif you plant when you’re building a long term emotional throughline. you don’t give two children mirrored costuming unless you’re establishing a bond the narrative will eventually cash in on. that’s film language 101.

and then the show keeps reinforcing it. season after season, the craft departments, costuming, lighting, blocking, colour grading, all commit to the same visual logic: will and mike are two halves of a developing emotional arc. they’re framed in parallel. lit in contrast. costumed in complementary palettes. the visual composition treats them like a pair whose storylines are meant to converge. that’s not subtext; that’s narrative scaffolding.

so when people say “byler wasn’t endgame,” i’m like: then explain why the show’s entire visual grammar behaves like it was. explain why the emotional beats only make sense if you read them as a slow burn tether. explain why the craft departments built a cohesive, deliberate, multi season visual argument that the writing later refused to honour.

the point isn’t “they hinted at byler.” the point is: the show’s craft constructed byler as a foundational emotional arc, and abandoning that arc breaks the internal logic of the story.

that’s why it’s maddening. not because we wanted it, but because the show’s own cinematic language told us to expect it.

seeing other queer people trying to put down the impact that Byler would have had in mainstream media is so frustrating, some of you in the community are truly dumb as fuck sometimes and so disingenuous acting like Stranger Things is not a worldwide phenomenon that every single demographic watches! You could also realize that you are going against the possibility of MORE representation which never hurts in general and that if you look around at how all the previous "revolutionary" couples you're mentioning were treated in the plot (and I can assure you I've watched more than half of the shows mentioned) you would see that we are still in a pit of PURE SHIT as for queer rep and Stranger Things has done the same now even bringing us back. The queer storylines are treated like shit and less important or end in tragedy almost constantly and are almost never between two main characters that were there from the beginning + THE MAJORITY OF THE SHOWS MENTIONED ARE SHOWS THAT HAVE A DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC THAT WAS ALREADY OK WITH QUEERNESS. We are going back, in other countries we have exactly almost ZERO queer rep produced in our own shows because most of the world is still homophobic as fuck and now YOUR country that produces the majority of mainstream media basically everywhere is going back into the closet too, constantly cancelling queer shows at every opportunity, killing lesbian and bisexual characters or treating them like shit/evil cheaters, doing humiliation rituals on gay characters and STILL to this day people inside the industry say that their projects are actively censored if they want to write queer stories... AND YOU'RE BUSY TALKING SHIT ABOUT BYLER ON TWITTER??? You all have lost your damn minds.
