So… Here’s the thing. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and I really feel like I need a fresh start with Harker. Things are changing a lot in the Tumblr RP community, and I want to be able to change with them and continue to grow this character as much as I’m able.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I can do that with this blog. After over seven years, there’s too much woven into the fabric of this beast to try and untangle and give potential new partners something to work with.

After talking it over with someone whose opinion I deeply respect, I’ve made the decision to archive this blog, and will be spending the day today doing so.

Harker isn’t going away though, and I’ve already created a new home for her over at @captain-wrench-wench! The blog is still sort of under construction - I need to set up the verse page today and do some other tweaks - but she’s playable over there if you want to give me a follow :)

I’ll set up a queue so this post will reblog a few times over the next week or so just to give everyone a chance to see it, but after that I likely won’t be here again.

“Heh. No, I think Ricky’s got a good hold on his leash now. It’d be easy money, though.”

Yellow eyes turned up to the bartender, who came by a minute later with two glasses of whiskey and a little bump of his elbow into Nick’s shoulder. “On your tab, Nicky?”

“I’m shocked you still make me pay.” He gave a little wink, though, and lifted his glass for Harker. “What are we toasting to tonight, Miss?” 

Harker took in the easy banter between the two with a small smile, holding her glass of whiskey close for all that she clearly wasn’t drinking any of it yet.

She seemed to be waiting on the offered toast, though it took her a moment of thought before she lifted her glass towards Nick and finally responded.

“To... a step in the right direction, perhaps?”

The detective kept his distance as the dog was presented and Harker immediately started petting him– the thing was friendly, yes, but wasn’t even looking at Nick. 

Animals didn’t tend to see him as more than a glorified vacuum, which on his off days wasn’t too far from reality. Still he shrugged and pulled up to a table not far from the bar. “I got the job, I took it. I’ll tell you one thing, a Pomeranian is a lot easier to track down than a runaway bride, or whatever else I’m sniffin’ around for.”

“A lot more drool, though.”

Harker was still giving the dog little scratches behind the ears as she listened to Nick, letting her eyes drift back and forth between both.

“I suppose it would be, yeah,” she quietly agreed, laughing again at Nick’s mention of drool.

After a long moment though, she slowly withdrew from the pup before turning to once more fully face Nick.

“I suppose you keep coming back here just to make sure he hasn’t taken off again, yeah?”

Devil didn’t wince, but his eyes did close a little tightly as the antiseptic hit the scratch along his skin. It wasn’t deep but it was irritated at least, and needed a cleaning.

“Is it, now. That’s… refreshing to hear, at least. My type of excitement isn’t really fit for ‘every day.’“ 

Harker was as careful as she could be as she slowly cleaned the scratches along Devil’s jaw, her touch soft as she slowly put a touch of antiseptic ointment onto the wound.

She wasn’t sure if he actually needed it, really, but figured it couldn’t hurt, at any rate.

“I live to be refreshing,” she teased. “And if I’m merely a place for you to wind down after your far more eventful days, then so be it.”

Nick paused, his brow furrowed a bit in a look of concentration and concern before he gave a small smile. There was a touch of humor in it. “I can’t guarantee this mug lookin’ all that friendly, but for you? Absolutely.”

He opened the door for her, ready to walk her downstairs, and put a set of keys on Ellie’s desk before they slid outside. The breeze was welcome, cool against synthetic flesh that could still thankfully feel it. 

The bar was just downstairs and a few feet down the block, in a sort of basement space, a neon sign much like the one upstairs pointing down to The Den. 

Nick opened the door for her, revealing a musty sort of place that was oddly welcoming in the poorly spelled signs in sharpie hung around the bar advertising new beers, drink specials, and ‘no Bon Jovi EVER.’ The bartender was an aging sort of man with a bald spot and a T-shirt of a hot dog. 

Nick gave a nod to the man, who waved a hand. “Nicky V. Hard day’s night, or do you feel bad for me?”

“Looks like a slow night, Ricky. I know you need my money. …How’s Puffin?”

“Great, thanks to you.” He smiled at Harker then, and already started preparing some glasses. His teeth were few, but the smile was warm. “This old robot saved my little doggy’s life. Tracked him down from the other side of the city after he ran away. Even gave him a bath. A sweet little boy– Puffin, who’s a sweet little boy-??” He bent down to retrieve a Pomeranian in a little pink collar. He held the dog out, feet on the scratched up bar, offering him up for a pet.

Harker admittedly wasn’t all that sure about the place that Nick took her to, and was glancing around with a slightly wary eye as they first stepped inside, but then, wonder of wonders, the bartender was fetching an adorable little dog and plopping him down right on top of the bar.

Health hazard or no, the dog was adorable and Harker was already making a beeline over to the dog to give him the scritches and pets he surely wanted, letting him take up her attention for a moment before she turned that smile back over to Nick.

“...Nick Valentine, pet detective. Will wonders never cease?” She glanced back down at the dog who had presented his belly for a rub which she was happy to give. “Though how you could say no to rescuing this face, I don’t know.”
