SOME ADDITIONAL BEHIND THE SCENES NOTES ON PIZZA FUNK (cornkiz talked about most of it, i’m just gonna add more stuff from my side including random fun facts)
this thread contains spoilers for the mod and its source material.
Roobit’s song was actually the first song to be composed - but I didn’t exactly like how it was coming out. It wasn’t bad necessarily, I just wasn’t satisfied with the chord progression and how it was turning out.
Surprisingly, even to myself, I didn’t sneak in many references to songs. Except:
Arim’s song, Fired, contains a rhythmic reference to the line “I’m beginning to feel like a rap god, rap god” from the song Rap God by Eminem, with the replacement line of “That is why I make the big bucks, big bucks.”
Roobit’s song, Do A Sing, contains a brief leitmotif of a song I’ve created but have not released yet to the public that is for a show I’m making.
Bossfight contains a section based on Cry for Me by Ironmouse. because it’s funny.

Lamp’s song, Twistery Mystery has a cello used in it, which is meant to be a reference to the “boob cello” mentioned in her route. It also contains the drumkit used in Megalovania.
Like Kiz mentioned in their post, Lamp’s song was going to be a remix of Ant Crusher - but it just seems very lazy and cheap to just do that, so I went with something more original.
Chris’ song sounds very similar to a song I’ve released named “Theodore’s Song of Positivity” in the melody market. and to that I say no it doesn’t.
I like Keen’s song’s instrumental. That’s not a fact about the mod - but i’m js saying.
Speaking of, I made a version of it where Keen DOESN’T get interrupted - I’ll prob release it soon.
During development, I liked to use base game stuff (as well as stuff from the original game and mod) while I waited for Kiz to have the sprites ready. For example:
Before Chris got his café for his stage, I used the shopping mall used in Week 5.
Before the Town Pizza background was drawn, the default Week 1 stage was used.
Before Boo, Mr. Arimnaes descended from the sky and back up - which was really funny.
Tankman was used in place of Chief Stabby in Flower for a bit.
Mr. Arimnaes’ stage was originally going to be in his office, evident by the first teaser using the bg from the original game, but then we realised it was too hard to draw it all, so we moved it downstairs into the hub.
I originally created some test dialogue using Lamp’s original game sprites and wrote some bullshit like “hey guys welcome to my cool fnf mod” and boyfriend spoke full english. idk i was bored ok
and i think that’s everything.

SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT!!! FOR BOTH THE FNF MOD AND THE SOURCE MATERIAL
okay so i hadn't ever worked on an fnf mod before pizza funk this was all very new to me. but conor (the one doing the coding/composing side of it) recommended to me (the one doing the art/writing side of it) that i make them on flipaclip projects and export them as gifs because that's how he does it and also becasue i'm more used to animating on flipaclip LOL. but the thing is, stabby is 10'2". he is an opponent. so if i wanted the brush sizes, the scaling and the quality to be consistent i had to scale the projects to allow him to hit an up note, which is why most of the sprites shown have a bunch of empty space. to accommodate for his 10'2" ass
before pizza funk was a thing, there was this:
conor did this mostly for fun, made arim and kiane chromatics and had them cover a song from another mod (the song is called JUNKYARD but i'm not fnfpilled enough to know what mod it's from) the kiane chromatic ended up unused as kiane became the stand-in for girlfriend rather than an opponent or the player. this got me and conor interested in actually making a mod so we both did what we do best! conor made cool music and charted/coded everything in, whereas i drew a bunch of pizza game characters and made em talk because that's all i ever do anymore
we actually worked on arim's song first. its original title, "Fired", stuck unlike most of the other songs that got new titles. arim's sprites were the first real assets made for this.
flipaclip is weird in that its swatches max out at like 6 colors which was really annoying because my arimnaes swatch didn't have the orange for the hat/mic or the red for the 3d glasses. my solution was to steal colors from other swatches i had and color those parts last. his hat is the same color as william-sama's jacket, and the red part of the glasses is taken from keenarnor
i remember during development the song was only about a minute and a half long and conor was like "shit i wish this song was longer but i already made the ending" and my solution was "have him say 'trick!' and have the song continue" which we both really liked the idea of. it was very annoying for him to code though! originally it was meant to hide the HUD and then it'd reappear when the song continued. however, at one point he somehow screwed it up in such a weird way that only arimnaes' left note disappeared. just his left note. i don't have a screenshot of that unfortunately but i do have this doodle i made not long after making fun of it
Twistery Mystery's placeholder name was Crusher. this is beccause the original conccept for it was kinda just a remix of lamp's theme. but that was scrapped in favor of an original song which is rad. god conor did such a good job with this song it's one of my favorites music-wise.
lamp's sprites were a challenge because i wanted to give her really wild exaggerated poses, but i had to do it without the use of the arms. i think lamp's are my favorite sprites out of all of them though, i'm very proud of these. she also doesn't have a microphone for 2 reasons:
having her hold a microphone would be very awkward with the way her arms are posed
she has a guitar amp on her vocal chords anyway
i actually draw lamp without her eyebrow more than i do with. but doing it with the eyebrow was fun and made for way better expressions imo
Smile also kept its placeholder name.
chris' colors are weird because GOD this guy has SO MANY COLORS.

anyway i think i did a really good job with his regular sprites but. not so much with his demon sprites. a friend played it who really liked the demon sprites so maybe it's just me though. i feel like i could've done better with the expressions and the tail. these sprites were very rushed! because a couple friends were waiting on me for something as i was making them but i really wanted to get them done before that.
The Restaurant is Full's placeholder name was Pizza. most of the placeholder names were very simple one-word titles. the song title is meant to be an homage to the track from the game "The Moon is Full" which is the song secret flower plays at the end of keen's route, while also saying "there's too many fucking people here" because a bunch of people interrupt his song. anyway this song was definitely the most ambitious for both of us. when we were tryijg to think of hwo to make keen's song unique (before production on that song even started!) i came up with something. i proposed to conor the idea of keen's song just constantly getting interrupted by random fucking people. i think conor already had the idea of a boo cameo in this song but I thought it'd be fun if there were also interruptions by sav and siv. sav gets to sing, siv's is right at the end of the song to arrest keen. this meant conor would have to code in all this garbage and needed chromatics for boo and sav (which he actually already had from the time he was just making chromatics for shits and giggles. he has a william+johnny chromatic too! they weren't ever used though) and I would need to make the idle/note animations for keen, alt versions of said animations where he's mad, an extra animation for him of him getting arrested by siv, idle/note animations for boo, extra boo animations for him entering and leaving, and idle/note animations for sav. it was a lot for both of us but GOD was it fun
keen's sprites were pretty fun to make!! you might notice a lot of the characters have weird-colored mics. this is becasue i didn't wanna have more colors than needed on any of them so for their microphones i just reused colors already on them. keen almost falling over for his left note sprite was conor's idea though. i asked for ideas for the left/right notes becasue i couldn't freaking think of anything and he sent me these:
the siv animation was the last thing that needed to be done for this song which got me more motivated to freaking finish it despite the faact siv has the weirdest fuckig anatomy known to mankind. don't hide the color layer they're ugly
eugh. also this animation has so many frames that conor had to turn it into an entirely separate sprite sheet LOL
i don't draw boo very often sso this was a bit of a challenge but i think these turned out pretty good. unfortunately the animation of him descending (the one where he's flapping his arms while smiling) isn't really visible in-game because conor put note animations over it to match his voiceline. also his right note animation was originally just meant to be him holding his hand out like the gay weirdo he is but the way conor positioned him he looks like he's leaning up against keen which is fun
i think conor scaled him down? for some reason? because i definitely didn't draw him THAT short.
originally conor wanted for a second icon to appear on the healthbar for the other opponents rather than it turning into this dual icon. he couldn't figure it out. he somehow managed to do this? before he just gave up LOL
i don't really have much to say about sav's other than the fact that the pattern on the shirt was really irritating to color because flipaclip is freaking weird and kept leaving empty space around it when i tried to use the bucket tool. also his idle animation is unmoving LOL. however during development before these sprites were done, conor used the bossfight benson sprites as a placeholder which was really funny
Do a Sing's placeholder name was Gumball. i remember conor had just gotten done streaming himself working on keen's song like 30 minutes ago when he said "oh by the way i finished roobit's song" and i was. like. HUH. he makes these so fast it's insane. and i listened to it and it was SO FUCKIJNG GOOD? wth conor
anyway roob's sprites were very very strange to work with. first of all, i'm not as good at drawing roobit as i am at drawing most of the other characters. second, roobit has too many colors to fit on a swatch and i had to borrow from siv's swatch to color her. third, she has ears that hang in front of her torso and arm, making animating those weird and making posing the arm difficult without making tangents. also the weird legs i give her are hard to pose in a way that'd let her do note animations like this. either way i think i did a pretty good job on these except all the coloring mistakes oops.
Flower's placeholder name was Justice. it was changed to Flower so that the "fakeout sensei song" joke would land because sensei has the whole "learnflower" thing and jay has flowers all over him, so the title makes sense for both of them. I thought up this gag, it's in reference to sensei's true route ending where if you have the highest affinity with him, kiane's just like "wait what??" and he turns into stabby and she goes "chief stabby was my true love all along and no one else!!!!!"
luckily for this joke i only had to make an idle and up arrow animation for him. i say "luckily" because this dude is kind of annoying to draw. the inside of his mouth and his wheels are blue because i like coloring them like that fuck you shut up.
sensei actually does have a defeat icon but it isn't visible in-game because he disappears before you can hit any notes. because it isn't visible in game i made it a little easter egg
that defeat icon is meant to mimic the "sensei suit why" sprite
which is technically plungersei not sensei but whatever i don't care it's funny
jay's design has a lot going on, even with how i simplify him when drawing him. once again, he has too many colors to fit on a flipaclip swatch so all the parts that are meant to be brown (like the inside of those sunflowers for example) are now orange. i had a lil flower wrapped around his mic in reference to his walkie-talkie. one of my friends told me his thumbs up in his right arrow animation looks like a middle finger NO IT DOESN'TTTTTTTT SHUT UPPPPPPPPP :(
when making jay's background i actually had to make it like 500 pixels taller than a regular background because otherwise when the camera panned up to him you could see the void.
here's roobit's background for comparison:
the mr. arimnaes rap is a relic of old tomfuckery. it originally just used the arim sprites from the game like in that junkyard cover mentioned above, which is why the mouth shapes with the new sprites don't line up with what he's saying at all. i can't find a screenshot thoigh
and as for bossfight, despite how autistic i am about benson regular show that was not actually my idea.
arim looks really gross flipped though. at the time of making the sprites i hadn't anticipated that they would ever need to be flipped.
