Hello! I feel very dependent on my girlfriend and seem to have the need of getting 100% atention all the time. I have a level of jelousy that goes into pathological. I feel terrible by the size of my ego. I really want to practice Buddism but I just cant see a way of not feeling like the world owes me something, althrough I know I'm very very wrong. How do I overcome my mean and selfish thoughts? I want to be better person.

The world doesn’t owe you anything. You owe the world everything. You are a spec of dust that is the universe. Not even President Obama is important enough in the grand scheme of things. So why should we feel like we’re just so damn important? We’re not.

Sometimes we think we’re independent. We have our own house, car and job, we do everything on our own, we don’t need anyone else. Wrong. Without the public, we wouldn’t have a job. Without labor workers, we wouldn’t have a car. Without farmers, we wouldn’t have food. So we’re never really independent.

I’m surprised your girlfriend is keeping up with you. It sounds like you almost need professional help. But you should also ask yourself, “Why do I think I’m so important? Do other people think I’m so important? Am I really that important?” Your answers should be on the NO spectrum side. When you’re dependent on things and feed your ego the way you’re doing, when you start losing people and things go against you, you will suffer greatly. Because 1) things and people are impermanent. Nothing will last forever, no matter how much we want it to. All things and people in some way will age, get sick and die. 2) By feeding your ego with jealously, importance, and the assumption that your girlfriend needs you just as much as you need her will cloud your ability to ever practice Buddhism correctly.

If you want to get beyond these issues, you need to develop a meditation practice and contemplate on these things. Try to see through these issues and problems without your own judgement or bias, but as an outsider looking in. When you can see, understand and accept your own faults, then it will be easier to overcome them and start your Buddhist path in a right way.

I love reading the debates my father-in-law comments on when using Facebook. Andy is a Christian, a Republican, raised in backwoods America, and not lightly educated. While we do have a lot of opposing views, it is interesting to see the other side of the coin. A good portion of my family believes the same things, but they’re all elderly and a heated debate usually ends with a quotation of the Bible, which I don’t necessarily find to be solid facts.

Back to the reason I posted this...

I just read a comment regarding Muslims that sparked some interest (mind you, this is an excerpt, not an entire post...) “So how would you feel if we came to your neck of the woods and did or tried to impose our way of life on you and if you didn't like it, we blow up buildings and start chopping off heads of whomever we feel is in our way...”

I may be misinformed, but have Christians not been eradicating the world of “savages” and “non-believers” since the the beginning of it’s time? Hasn’t the white man, under the rule of God and his word, traveled this world and killed men, women, children, the elderly, the sick, the devout because they would not convert?

Have we forgotten the history of the United States? Native Americans ring a bell? I’m sure the list goes on for miles, but sadly when I Google this topic to look further into it I’m bombarded with BULLSHIT. It’s honestly sad a person can’t be provided the truth, just a boat load of opinions and right/left-wing nuts.

We have forgotten that books were created to archive, technology was created to assist in this endeavor, and now we’re all going to create a generation of people who know NOTHING because all we did all day was sit on our iPhones and share posts regarding Obama doing nothing (what’s so new about that?) and our overly opinionated “factual evidence”.

Hell, my history books were so misconstrued I learned more from my English teacher my Junior year than I have ever learned.

This is a sad world of confusion and anger. We’re all going to destroy each other.
