He's lucky enough not to let that little comment slip, but it's definitely thought with the utmost sincerity. If his face weren't already red before, it definitely would be now.

"Normally, you ask a guy about that sorta thing before takin' him on dates, Claire." He has to say this through a clenched jaw, tight with embarrassment. Honestly, it's bad enough that Claire had handled this whole thing the way he did in the first place, but even when he's just blatantly saying stupid things like this---

It's the kind of frustrating dilemma that makes Firo really want to shove his head into the nearest cushion and scream.

"Wouldja just---you'd think with how observant you are sometimes you'd be able to tell that sorta thing," Firo complains, using his grumbling as a convenient excuse to not have to answer right away. "...Look, I don't not wanna be l--- t... together, alright? I mean---augh, listen, I wouldn't... mind... that sorta thing, just..."

Firo retracts his hand with speed he's never utilized outside of a fight.

"...No reason."

He can't help the barrage of angry, negative thoughts that bombard him. Rationally, it's not like Luck had directly said he hadn't wanted to hold hands or anything, but Firo's tendency to catastrophize isn't doing him any favors.

Obviously he doesn't want to hold hands with me just like that. Hahaha. He's way too cool of a guy to just hold hands. Obviously. Alright, well, as long as I can play it off well, he'll forget about it.

He coughs awkwardly, looking anywhere but at Luck. "So, uh, how's---uh, how's everything lately?"

I guess Luck's not always immune to impulses like that either.

Firo can't help but smile a little fondly, taking a second to just look at Luck like he finds something new to appreciate every time he does.

He never really imagined he'd find someone giving up on cooking a little cute, but it's probably because Luck so rarely throws in the towel when it comes to anything. The fact that it's over something so little just makes Firo feel like laughing a little. That said, he'd given up way before Luck had, so he's not really in the best position.

"Fine by me," Firo says, just the tiniest bit wryly. "Better than watchin' you get frustrated over a saucepan for an hour."

Firo's sure he looks disturbed. He feels pretty disturbed.

It's not the sentiment itself that freaks Firo out. He doesn't actually believe in ghosts or haunting or any of that stuff, so it's not like he has a reason to be freaked out by the idea of being haunted. It's just, even the thought of Ladd being there, haunting him forever...

Yeesh.

Sure, he doesn't believe in ghosts or anything, but what if?

Granted, Firo probably wouldn't have known to pay attention to that sort of thing before now, since he hadn't actually given Maiza more than a passing thought when they talked to eachother.

Of course, now that he's more well-informed, he does feel a little bad for writing Maiza off as the kind of lame one. Sure, he's definitely still lame, but... Anyway, he just feels bad. If he'd have known Maiza was having such an awful time pretty much constantly, he probably wouldn't have written Maiza off in the first place.

But that was probably the point, all things considered.

Well, at least I won't make that mistake again.

"... Right, sure."

Okay, I can think things like that pretty convincingly, but I don't know squat about actually comforting people. Why'd I sign myself up for this?

"Okay, Maiza, you're a terrible liar. Honestly, I'm not sure how I didn't see it before now." He breaks, rooting himself in place from where he'd been about to physically back himself out of the conversation. "I mean, if you can talk about things to anyone it should be us, right? Well, I mean, I'm probably not really your first or second choice or anything, but it's not like I'd go around makin' fun of 'ya for it."

"Agh, come on."

Firo pointedly doesn't make eye contact, trying hard not to look like he's just swallowed a lemon. Getting teased normally is already bad enough---he's never liked being the butt of the joke, coming out of it more embarrassed than most people seem to.

It's even worse when it's Czes, of all people. Firo knows logically he's a couple centuries old, but that barely makes a difference at all when he still looks like a kid.

"Go easy on me, Czes. I already hear enough 'a that kinda thing from Pezzo and Randy." He's less annoyed when it's Czes, though; it's honestly difficult to stay all that mad at him, especially when he's at least way less persistent about it all.

If I had to deal with those two at home, I think I'd die or something.

"Anyway, if you're gonna be like that, at least find somethin' else to tease me about. I don't want Ennis hearin' that sorta stuff!"

i really appreciate how firo after randomly getting shot having not even made it to the person shooting him in an attempt to disarm him is like "uh not to be weird but can you maybe tell the people here with me we had a huge badass fight before you shot me? thanks" i really appreciate that as a trait

To an ordinary person, they might sound like comforting words. To Firo, who's been involved in more intense and dangerous situations involving someone trying to make him feel comfortable than he can count on one hand, the words immediately begin to set off alarms in his mind.

It might be different if he knew Raine a little better---if it were someone like Maiza, he'd probably be able to take that kind of thing at face value, since he at least knows Maiza's looking out for him. But he's never been very good at reading intent from others ( hell, he let a couple people who kidnapped him sleep in his home once ), so constant suspicion has become a little necessary.

"I dunno what you're gearin' up for here, but you can cut the safe-and-welcome crap right now. I'm a camorrista. We don't really do that kinda thing." He's doing his best to ignore Isaac and Miria further back in the restaurant setting up their dominos again.

He can't keep back the sigh that follows as he continues talking. "Look, if you're gonna make some kinda point, it doesn't make a difference whether you do it before or after the fluff."
