when i was in a (bad) static the OT insisted that i main tank, which is fine, except i was playing WAR which has a slower opening ramp time and he slammed full PLD burst right out the gate. which would not be a problem except he point blank refused to do any stance dancing or use shirk during a fight, which caused us to wipe several times whenever there was an early tank swap (because my voke would be on cooldown). when we confronted him about it he shared the INCREDIBLE tech of "prepull shirk" and then blamed me for losing aggro because he had shirked me during prepull and it was thus entirely my fault that he got aggro from his opening burst.
in case you're confused, shirk redirects EXISTING aggro, if you use it before pulling the boss it does literally nothing because you have ZERO AGGRO and are thus dividing FUCKING ZERO. he would not listen to anyone who tried to explain this to him and did it every pull. he was completely serious about this
he got angry when i suggested he main tank if he was not willing to delay tank stance until after his opening burst. because he didn't want to main tank. we also could not kick him from the static because he was the FC leader at the time. eventually we all got fed up and ditched his ass at once (for WAY more reasons than this, but that's another can of worms)
like i do genuinely miss having a static to raid with because i find solving a fight with friends fun, but there sure were jackasses like that lmao
if you ever think youre bad at ffxiv, at least you probably arent 'prepull shirk tantrum' bad

Okay, you know, re-reading the Haurchefaunt story "Thoughts Unspoken" just drives home how wildly different Haurchefaunt's view of his family was from Artoirel's. Because when Artoirel apologizes to WoL after their mission in Falcon's Nest, he says that their father "has never been able to say no to my dear half-brother." But Haurchefaunt in his letter suggests he barely ever spoke to his father, and certainly not to ask him for things--this request to take in the Scions was a struggle for him. From Francel's story "Vows Unbroken," Haurchefaunt ran off and avoided being at the manor as much as possible to get away from the Countess.
I... wonder if Artoirel was just continually told that Haurchefaunt was their father's favorite by his mother. Rather than actually seeing any evidence for it himself.
Look, there's something profoundly wrong and not okay with the all 3 of the Fortemps brothers, but especially Artoirel and Emmanellain and it is easy to see their Father's part in it (the neglect of who they are as people, the way he never sees them or what they contribute, the sideways comparisons to Aymeric and finding them wanting, the idealization of the knighthood and freedom that Haurchefant represents for him against their duties as heirs of House Fortemps, the fact that they mostly seem to exist to fill a part of his duty he'd rather forget he's trapped in), but their mother must have contributed too.
And how could she not, married to a man who had an affair, who openly acknowledged the bastard child who resulted, who constantly overlooked the children (heirs) she gave him. There's no mention of her by Edmont, she might as well never have existed for all he speaks of her. And you can feel her resentment of that fact and how she passed it on to especially Artoirel in early Heavenswards so very clearly. Emmanalein is the useless one, the one who doesn't fit, but Artoirel is his mother's son, he's the one who mentions her, who feels the emotion of what her place in the family was. And Artoirel's growth is subtle and background, but his acceptance of his father's shortcomings and disregard for him and decisions to do his duty anyway, to not resent Aymeric for being his father's new favorite the way he resented Haurchefant, to stand beside him and fight for a new Ishgard, is such a good arc in that light. He won't be consumed by the resentment that is fair at all the things his father is and isn't, he's going to do what is right and care anyway, he's going to be secure in his own worth rather than lash out anymore.
I think this is a nice microcosm/illustration of the overall themes of Heavensward being both "sins of the fathers" and "lies of the past." Because yeah, House Fortemps is noticeably damaged by Edmont's affair. His family isn't able to move past that event because it's still part of their present. But while it's undeniable that Edmont did sin--Haurchefaunt is obviously the proof of it--the truth of the matter is twisted to keep the house deliberately divided. Even after the wounded party was long since gone.

i think like how healers in ffxiv have the rescue ability to drag people to where they're currently standing, they should give tanks a new ability that pushes people away from them, with the intention tanks can use it when someone is going to get hit by a cleave or something. we can call it 'get down mr president'. nothing bad could possibly come from this
in conjunction with this they should add a raid where the only way to solve a central mechanic is for healers and tanks to use their respective pulling/pushing powers to send dps flying around the stage like a pinball machine
theres that one tik tok where a british guy is reacting to someone making tea and they put the teabag in and take it out a few moments later and he goes 'ten seconds, love?' totally deadpan. Anyway when a white mage uses cure 1 at level 100 I say 'cure 1, love?' out loud irl in the same tone and cadence
