trying to write an intro for melin but i do feel kinda like my familiarity with her makes it difficult for me to know what's necessary for someone to know... i've explained that she's transgender and from gridania and raised poor and dating tataru but now i'm like... is there anything else really... i bet there's something about melin that really begs for explanation but i'm unaware of it because i know what she's about.

i mean i guess an intro that covers some of the possibly confusing stuff but not all of it is better than not having one at all, but... ehhh... my perfectionism...

played the demo for Neverway, an upcoming horror life sim/stardew-like/rpg/2d zelda-like??, and this game kicks ass so far. the writing is tighter than any other stardew-like i've yet played, the story is super interesting, and the art and world are really beautiful. also i'm already a huge fan of the protagonist fiona. look at her

normally i prefer character creation in my rpgs, but fiona is basically the exact character i would make anyway so i'm happy

I've been thinking about tuii and tataru just missing each other leading up to arr, like, tataru is a goldsmith like a year or two before tuii starts training at the goldsmiths guild, tuii doesn't live in ul-dah but she and her father run a makeshift clinic for refugees and they frequently come into town for supplies, she travels to vesper Bay on multiple occasions to do guild business and travels through there on her way to limsa when she decides to become an adventurer. I'm probably just rambling but I'm a sucker for ships passing in the night

tataru stepping out to get some fresh air and catching the eye of a downtrodden, burned out doctors daughter who's off to find her destiny, only to have her come knock on her door a few months later

#this is a really fun idea #when i was writing tfe i had an idea about 16-year-old melin briefly meeting 11-year-old tataru when he was traveling to limsa #cause he probably traveled south from gridania and then took a ship from western thanalan where tataru could've easily happened to be #and the idea was tataru would remember this (if not that it was melin) but melin would have forgotten it #but then eventually i was like... nah the moment where they meet in-game is really important...#so it probably still happened but both of them forgot #anyway. i am evidently also a sucker for ships passing in the night #so i think this is a good idea. but i'm biased

you know, not something i have previously thought about but melin's upbringing (raised in gridania by one duskwight Maman and one keeper Mother, raised extremely poor because their only incomes were her Maman's Wood Wailer pension and her Mother's meager botany sales, which the guild took a hefty cut of [the specter of fufucha's predecessor being a huge piece of shit looms large over melin's backstory for some reason], mostly duskwight friends because of her Maman) really sets her up to have a strong antipathy for

rich people in general and nobles in specific

condescending weirdos

so when she encounters alphinaud and alisaie at the memorial services she probably instantly despises them lmao

i can't really see a reason for her to stop being an alphinaud hater until like, the very end of arr. during post-arr and binding coils she's probably like "oh gods i cannot be an older sister figure to him and alisaie like they clearly want me to be" and then during heavensward she graduates to "sigh. okay fine i can try" and then through the rest of the story she takes that role deadly serious, as she does most things in her life.

("older sister" is a simplification. i wouldn't exactly describe her affection for them as familial, but that's the closest easily-expressible sentiment i've got. she doesn't think of herself as a mentor to them, and she definitely doesn't think of herself as a parental figure to them, and while they are obviously friends, the word "friend" isn't as close to the nuances as "older sister" is. she's just about exactly ten years older than them, which is a weird age gap that doesn't lend itself to any relationship with a 1-2 word description i'm aware of... okay this is way too much explanation for my use of the word "sister")
